Question! So can I tune each step like the way Moog 960 does? Meaning, am I just limited to semirones, or can I tune to whatever I want?

Does the dark time only tune to the nearest semitone like Chromatic steps? Or can it tune to any frequency? I'm trying to figure out before I buy it, will I be able to tune a sequence by ear to any frequency, kinda like the moog 960 does.

I have a Moog Voyager. Just purchased the dark time. I was looking on their site. They mentioned a S-trigger cable. Is that necessary to connect them?

Not sure about the IO of the Voyager. But if it has midi in and out you should be fine only with that

USB and midi shouldn't really be used for clock sync, use the audio input.

Its not necessary unless you need the advanced midi manipulation features. Something like a iConnectivity interface is just as accurate from my testing and can have more midi ports along with USB. It has the same jitter and the ERM based on my testing even when using the audio sync on the ERM. Most DAWs can cover the advanced features in the ERM.

MOTU interfaces w/ MTS are tight as well - especially using them with Digital Performer. A lot of it has to do w/ priority the DAW places on clock and midi events. DP was built as a sequencer DAW. Tight.

One year later I happened back here with the same basic question. I have my scale and 7 notes. How do I dial in those notes on the steps? Also, how do you set the internal clock to a specific bmp? Thirdly, it's obvious that these are the very first things to address, so why aren't you? Either I'm missing something or this is all done very randomly without any control over choosing specific notes and bpm.

isn't it obvious? the function of the 2x8 knobs is to set the pitch / notes. the function of the first bottom knob is to set the BPM. the third and fourth switch on the bottom sets whether the pitch is quantized (notes) or non-quantized (linear pitch change).

Just plugged mine in straight away, got along easy enough with just cv but when it tried midi I could only get 8 steps out of it, the other 8 would modulate cv but not gate. Really need to read the manual 😂 to figure out some of the midi tricks. Thanks for showing me how to change midi channels though expect that will come in handy at some point. Also rocking a sub 37 👍but mainly using the cv inputs because 8 step midi sequences get boring & can do all that on the moog anyways.

Not directly related to video, but - for whatever reason my SH-01a is not receiving MIDI clock from erm. I have synth connected via usb and also via midi to erm. I set synth to sync to midi. But it doesn’t seem to react at all. I did manage to get erm to work with tr8s… thank you!!

My Launchpad has been collecting dust for a year. I'm not an avid Ableton user, but I love my hardware set up and yes I have both a Digitone and Digitakt, and many other synths. I'll definitely be playing around with this. I was considering to Purchase an Anolog RYTM, which would be GREAT, but its a ways out on my synth journey. This set up with the pad and midi control may do the justice I need to get me by happily. Thanks for the tutorial!

im only having an issue with the midi section... when my usb mode is set to overbridge i cant control any logic software instruments. i can control the synths if i set my digitakts usb mode to "usb audio+midi", but doing that stops the audio from my digitakts sample tracks from being picked up by logic. any ideas?

An alternate option for both of these is get a free drum synth and tweak the sounds for digital sounding kicks and snares, and rip from a free loop to get the cymbals (or a free vst that does this) because cymbals are super difficult to synthesize. Also, I recommend packs you buy and own by downloading to your hard drive. I'm having luck with ADSR stuff, they even have a sample manager with tagging

I'm very confused about this point. They say on their website: "The multiclock improves the timing of all instruments which are clocked by it. Nevertheless, you can not manipulate notes that you send from your DAW to your synths through the multiclock MIDI Interface. Keep your sequences in the internal sequencers of your external instruments or sequencers for tight lines!" Doesn't this mean any notes I send from my DAW to trigger external hardware synths will be laggy or out of sync?

Depends on your system more than the ERM Multiclock. What I’ve learned is that no machine is true with latency. It will get you close to 0 but never 0.

I have not tried it like that. but, here is what the manual says: Sending and receiving MIDI notes Each active step of Dark Time generates and sends MIDI note messages. They are made up of a note-on and a note-off command as well as a MIDI note number. They will define pitch (i. e. note name / number) and note length. These data are channel-related, which means that they will be assigned to and transmitted on one (or more) of the 16 existing MIDI channels. Both step registers of Dark Time independently allow to transmit MIDI data on different MIDI channels. This way you can control two sound generators simultaneously. Dark Time also receives MIDI data: Connect a MIDI keyboard or a controller to Dark Time’s MIDI-In socket (or USB port) and transpose the sequence on the fly while it is chugging away.

if you use a midi keyboard to send midi notes, and you can select midi channels, I don't see why this wouldn't work from your daw you can have 2 different gate and cv outs

In order to send midi notes you have to use usb or a regular midi cable. To send clock from your DAW or hardware sequencer you can send audio tone to generate clock
