I'm retired living solely on SS Retirement Benefits. Bought a 2 bedroom one bath 1100 sft foreclosure. Paid cash with closing $20k. $950 a year taxes. No mortgage. Northern PA on a dead end Street. Woods surround 3/4 of my property. Bears and deer come right up to the house. You can leave your car running and phone and wallet on the front seat of your car with the windows down, run into convenience store and come back out and everything still there. Been to NYC many times but love country living the best.

Not a realtor, but I am a lifelong native NYer… while you’re correct that a rent stabilized apt is coveted, the space itself has to be worth it and sorry to say but a dungeon basement unit isn’t worth keeping for that. Most move out of these subterranean spaces and for your current rent, you can definitely get a bigger better rent stabilized apt elsewhere. You won’t get that kinda deal these days in Manhattan or BK, but you just might in western QNS. Since the western half of BK is now super pricey/gentrified, lately apt hunters have been moving/searching into western QNS (just look at StreetEasy for the past coupla yrs). Gentrification ramped up in this part of QNS several years ago, where access to midtown and BK is quick n’ easy. Key to a financially manageable life in NYC is living in an area that’s close enough to all the action w/o actually being in the middle of it. You can always move into an overblown $$$$ shoebox in a hip nabe anytime, but finding a good deal apt that’s in short distance of your hangout spots should be the initial goal for those w limited means moving to NYC.

People live in NYC for what's OUTSIDE of their apartments. It's a tradeoff. Living in a spacious house in exurbia feels like being in exile, or in a minimum security prison. Because once you get to the end of your driveway --- what is there? Where's the life, the restaurants, the museums, the theater, the amazing library (most beautiful in the world) the vibrancy, the beautiful parks and architecture, the lights, music, and quirky shops, and (again because it's so important) the great food!! It's all just THERE -- all the time -- right outside your door.

@@user-zk5rt3gb3e But after you pay rent, you can't afford many of these things. LOL Although at one time I owned a home in a densely populated area. I got lucky and the home doubled in value and allowed me to build a huge home with the equity, with money left over for investments. Your plan works if you live as cheaply as you can, and save as much money as you can, so that you can someday escape the cycle of renting. I'm telling you that low bills and low worries is very sweet. High rent is not a good long-term plan, but millions are stuck in this cycle, and it breaks my heart. Lived in many a studio apartment when in one's 20s. One had this great Murphy bed that swung out vertically and then you pushed it down. Wonderful bed. The stove had legs. Then there was the one in DC that you walked through the closet to the bathroom, passing a sink that was about six inches square. But the topper was the full-size (like 1950s full-size) stove. In baby blue enamel. Love your videos and your narration. Keep 'em coming!

@@TrainsFerriesFeetI’m always so happy when other retirees are moving to NYC. Best of luck to you. I retired 2 yr ago and moved from Washington DC (my home for almost 25 yr) to TX where I’d lived for 12 yr before moving to DC. I mostly chose TX for cost of living, it’s where most of my family resides and familiarity. But, I miss living in a walkable city with 4 seasons, so hope to make NYC my home in 2025. I’ll be visiting Manhattan for a 7th time in two weeks for holiday festivities and so looking forward to it.

@@PurpleMoon13264 Thanks; I live in SC, but I grew up in NJ. I will make up most of the cost of living difference by not having to have a car. I don't have any family within 500 miles and a lot of my friends have either moved or passed away. I'm trying to talk my employer into letting me work remotely so I can move sooner. Unsuccessfully, so far.

Great tour...I really liked your apartment except for the bathroom. My Mom always left her stickers on too. I liked the velcro idea and as I've said before, I really like the artwork on your walls, especially the large canvas. Awesome that you got it for free! One thing I am not, is super organized (I am not messy at all, I just have a lot of stuff). Your apartment was neat and tidy. I suppose the issue for me would be deciding what to keep and what has to go. My hubby and I live in a 3 bed 2 bath home with a large kitchen and island, so you can imagine how I would struggle having to downsize. Thanks for the tour, it was nice getting to know you some more. I like the adjustable desk too. Have a great week!!

There's a reason I didn't show you the inside of my closet lol. It's technically a walk in but you can only take one step currently. And while downsizing can be a lot, when I downsized to move here it was actually very freeing. I had a 1600 sq ft condo with a basement, and I only brought what I could fit in my dad's mini van. We played Jenga a bit but everything I needed fit! That was my first NYC studio that was half the size of my current one. I don't think I could fit everything in a mini van still lol

Could you tell me how this works if one is retired? If one’s income stream consists of a pension, social security benefits, 401k withdrawals, plus they have a nice cushion in a savings account and excellent credit, would a 3rd Party Guarantor be willing to work with them if their income streams are at least 27.5 times the monthly rent but under 40 times the monthly rent?
@hayley_bailiff
@hayley_bailiff 11 күн бұрын
Yes! A third party guarantor would be willing to work with them on that. They also are willing to work with people who don't have the income but who have assets. The big third party guarantor companies are Insurent and The Guarantors. Insurent allows you to get pre-approved for a certain amount. If you wanted to play around on their website you can see if you qualify. You can't test it out with The Guarantors though, because they only allow applications linked to specific apartments since landlords need to help with the approval
