TBH, I don't see the point in selling something you really like to get something you *might* like, really or otherwise. When I heard the price for the OP-XY, I genuinely laughed. Then moved on.

I think this is a great message and important to remember. Value and price are not the same, and not the same for everyone. And it shouldn't affect us so much how other people choose to spend their money.

I'm not angry at the people who can afford it and are going to have fun with it. I'm angry at TE for pricing the this outside of the reach of most people. They clearly for some reason don't want to sell alot of these. Price it lower, sell triple the amount, and you'll make more money. Someone please buy them a calculator for Christmas.

I was a professional software reviewer for 5 years and left the job because of shilling. Here’s the truth: every reviewer knows the unspoken rule that a free product/license means that you’re expected to make a positively biased review. If you don’t, after a couple times, they will pull advertising from your site/publication, or they’ll cease to send you free stuff. That’s it. And everybody knows that you never ask for a nice feature, because you don’t have to. That would be insulting, even illegal in some cases. You’ve said it yourself. If you don’t get free stuff, you’ll lose money. And to get free stuff, you need to be biased. It’s that simple. So I laugh when hear the classic disclaimer “the company sent this or that, but I wasn’t paid and they have no say about the content of this video”. They don’t have to tell you what to say, they know you know what to say, if you want to keep getting stuff. And you did get paid. You got free gear worth thousand of dollars. That’s the reality, and that’s why every successful geartuber is a shill.

My most expensive synth is $14,000. It's not about the price, it's just that I think all TE products are not very interesting. Poor designs. And yes, overpriced for what you get. No hatred implied.

For the price of the OP-XY I can get the Digitakt MK2 and the Digitone MK2 and Arturia's KeyStep Pro. Or maybe the Hydrasynth desktop module and the Blofeld the Microfreak and Arturia's KeyStep Pro and some good beginner mixer. I'm simply value-snesitive. 🤷

I'd love it if you dove into some of the features you like (or at least think you'd like), and figure out ways to get that feature into the stuff you already use. Whether that's a hardware solution, or a software one. I think most people that like it like its work flow. Are there parts of its workflow you can get elsewhere?

Their marketing strategy works. Everyone is talking about their new gadget. Not because it's so good, but because it's way too expensive for what it is. But that doesn't matter. Everyone now heard about it, and a certain percentage will buy. Some even because it's too expensive, and gives them the opportunity to show off. I know, I bought the original OP-1 when it came out.

Thanks, great message. I score the music equipment against my personal criteria, on things like; Keybed, sound, workflow, and desirability. I maintain this in a spreadsheet and update it periodically. I compare the equipment and use the evaluation for determining what to purchase. It's not a perfect method, I've ended up purchasing equipment I don't use because of some stupid little thing, like the Cobalt 8, scored high yet I never play it because it too hard to change patches, (can't see the screen, and for some stupid reason I hate having to scroll through the sounds and hit enter, that extra step has killed the value to me.). I love my OP-1, but I think I am going to just lust after the OP-XY, too many other synths on my Sweetwater Wish List.

This comment is not aimed at this author!! It SHOULD be priced at $2000-2300. The only people complaining are 28 year old KZbinrs who haven't gotten a financial foothold in life, yet still enjoy synths but feign rage because it isn't priced like a plastic Roland Boutique that takes AA batteries. Does anyone think the employees at T.E. are "fat cats" rolling to the bank in their Bentleys while smoking fine cuban cigars? If you were a company (Teenage Engineering) of less than 30 people, in Sweden, designing a high-grade milled aluminum chassis with mil-spec knobs and a custom keyboard with custom high-grade plastics, subwoofer, speaker, Gorilla-glass OLED panel HUGE lithium battery and wireless radios, which will sell only to niche buyers - maybe only a few thousand tops, you HAVE to charge $2,000+. The software R&D by the software team is thousands of man hours and quality software designers make six figure salaries. Anyone complaining about price doesn't recognize that small companies making high-grade NICHE musical products cannot enjoy the same economies of scale that Apple does in their iPhone. Economies of scale (products that can be made cheaper when being made by the millions) isn't something Teenage Engineering will ever get to experience. So it costs them a dramatically more when they only order ~3000 units from their manufacturing partner. The price is about where it should be. If they sold them for $1,400 they wouldn't be able to keep the lights on (and people would still complain about $1,400). Where is the crime that has every YT kiddy up in arms?!?!

@@Station2Station-du2gh hi, I’m just wondering, did you actually watch the video?😅 Just to point out a few things that make me think you didn’t. 1. I’m not raging (and also not feigned raging) about the price. I actually said things like “some things just cost more than others” and “mobility has a price”. My message was more “breath and lets keep making music”, a message of peace, not rage 2. I am not a 28 year old KZbinr lost and grasping at life. I am a 41 year old Dentist, married with two kids who loves synths and making youtube videos and happen to be pretty settled in for the ride of “life”. I’m not complaining about the price, TE can charge what they want, I just can’t responsibly buy it, just like I can’t responsibly buy a bmw m4 even though I can technically afford one. I am happy for all who can and will but it, and just like I said in the video, I hope they share the adventure with us in future uploads. Oh and just fwi, in a news article a few years back, they showed the TE headquarters. There was literally a frikkin lamborgini in there for decoration. So yeah, they can be a luxury company and charge luxury prices and I won’t fault them for it, it’s their company, but let’s not pretend they are sweatshop workers charging the bare minimum. Peace!

@@MidlifeSynthesist OH IM SORRY - I should have mentioned it wasn't targeted at you. I didn't get the feeling that you were upset about the price. I think the OP-XY will possibly be supported for a decade with more engines and capabilities. The price will probably stay the same. I cannot fault TE do go all out on the quality and features, and it costs money. This price will support further development for years to come. It’s a masterpiece already and possibly will hold its value.

Nice video! I hope you're feeling better. I totally get the excitement and the vibes of wanting an OP-XY. TE does some very interesting and unique work. That said, answering your question: I don't think you should sell one of your beloved machines to get one. Why? Because I believe TE shouldn't be rewarded with massive support from musicians who can barely afford their products and have to make a huge effort to buy them. Purchasing one means endorsing their pricing ideology and value perception. As someone here mentioned: "Pricing merits criticism." Even if it's a wonderful machine, we all know the price is very far from reasonable. So, as you said, dear @MidlifeSynthesist , there's no need for anger-it's pointless. Whoever wants to buy it, go ahead and enjoy it. But I think it's important for some of us who can't, or who find it very difficult to purchase, to say: "Sorry, TE, but you can't count on me."

I'm not surprised at all that the OP-XY is divisive. But everyone is looking at the price and not the feature list. Just looking at TE's website and they took the OP-Z and upgraded *everything*. Do people complain about the price of a Roland Fantom? Or a Waldorf Iridium? No? Why not? So why complain about the OP-XY? :) At the moment, I plan to wait until the new year and then perhaps dip into my savings for one. No, I don't need one. But the OP-1 has limitations that mean I don't use it as much as I want to. But I love how portable it is. Or I could look at an Ableton Move. That has the advantage that I could move projects to the PC. It's a lot cheaper than the OP-XY, but it has only 4 tracks. That's one of those same limits I mentioned that the OP-1 has.

No, I don't think you should. Sure if the holidays rain cash on you, but otherwise nah. You have bigger fish to fry and you are 100% right to invest time in your current setup just having fun. I hit a similar point recently where I felt less interested in new gear and more interested in swapping out some less satisfying things with other things. I have seriously considered swapping my FA-08 for a Nord or a Yamaha because their key action feel so much better than the Roland one. More refine and explore rather than build I think.

Eight hundred bucks for an implant is inexpensive in the USA 😝; think between $2k and $4k. I have one with a crown that replaced a broken tooth. In my case I would call it amusement with TE. I don't feel negative about it. You are quite right, it is really up to each of us to decide what we want to afford. I can afford an OP-XY, but I just don't want to afford one. Likewise I can afford to buy a BMW or a Mercedes, but I don't want to afford one and drive a Corolla Hybrid instead and my previous car was a 20-year old Camry. We call it the "Beep-beep car" because here in the Bay Area there are a lot of luxury cars.
