Push 3 rocks, single greatest inspirational gear , I have ever bought. All what you said, plus when you add the MPE it is insanely creative. I am using it in controller mode. I just hit ctrl+shft+eject and my mac screen shuts off and I am in standalone heaven with an extra 1000 in my pocket :)

Using Simpler with Push (Push 2 for me, at the moment anyway) has been a revelation. Simpler on Push is like a really great hardware sampler with a super clear interface. I like to record instruments as audio and then chop and mangle samples. It's annoying that it's not possible to sample directly into Simpler but the workaround (record audio track, convert to Simpler, delete audio track, work on track with Simpler in it) is fast and simple. Doing this directly on Push is a real pleasure. The fact that Simpler also has the same filters built in that are used in other Live devices like Auto Filter is a bonus, I've found I can totally reshape a sound without using any other devices.

I am a musician. I write and play Techno live using hardware. I record what I play and release that, so I don't sit and produce music on a computer. However, looking at Ableton Push 3 in standalone has me interested...Thanks for your information.

I have a different take on it so far and I hope to share it on the channel soon: between the Push and the MPC workflow, I feel much faster on the MPC. This is before the 3.0 update but I don't see that making the experience any worse - quite the opposite. I feel the Push is getting in my way to some degree, like a slower way of working in Ableton compared to just opening up the laptop. The MPC feels like the opposite in that the hardware workflow is primary and the software daw behind it is secondary. This doesn't mean that the Push 3 doesn't do a lot of things right of course. I love the pads, the build, the sounds and effects. But personally I feel like I'm better off just using Ableton Live and a simpler controller for when recording in notes. For audio recording, the pads aren't needed in the first place. Just my two cents though, appreciate your take on it!

Although I've only had a Push 2 so far, I have the same experience on my MPC: I feel that I can sketch out beats a lot faster than I ever would in a standalone Push experience. Trying to get an existing DAW working in a standalone workflow apparently doesn't work as well as going the other way around: making an existing standalone workflow more DAW-like over time.

One of the reasons I'm staying with my Push 2 for now is that the workflow of the Push 3 in standalone doesn't seem to be particularly quick. Whereas with my MPC Live 2: it follows a reverse philosophy compared to Ableton of starting with standalone device workflow and then making it more DAW-like over time, especially with the upcoming MPC 3 update. As a result I can pump out beat sketches in standalone pretty fast on an MPC, probably a lot faster than on a Push 3 standalone. And I can still directly export it to Ableton format. But then again, I don't use a lot of additional hardware that I need to hook up. So if you use your Push 3 to be a hub for all that hardware then I can definitely get your choice. And for sure I'm looking forward to all the improvements they will make on it as atm, Push 3 standalone is pretty much a Gen 1 product that could use a lot more cooking.

I'm a week late in seeing this video, so not sure how likely it is you will see this response. But I felt compelled to respond to your comment about recording MIDI vs. recording audio. I HATE recording to audio. First, I have to admit that I don't really play any instruments well. About the only instrument I can play is the guitar, and my skills with that instrument can be described as amateur at best. So perhaps recording audio vs. MIDI is different for those who are actually proficient at playing an instrument. But the real reason I prefer MIDI is because I like the "impermanence" of MIDI. When I'm making music, I like to experiment with different ideas as I go along, and MIDI makes that possible in a way that recording audio does not. When you record an audio track, you're stuck with what you've got. If I record a melody and I'm not feeling the sound as much as I thought I would, it's as simple as changing a preset. Wondering what that track you just recorded would sound like played on a guitar? Or an electric piano? Or by a string orchestra? Scroll through sounds to your hearts content to find out. Can't really do that with audio. Or maybe you want to hear your melody in a different key. Or maybe you want to hear what it would sound like played backwards. Or inverted. Or maybe you want to hear what that chord progression sounds like arpeggiated. It can all be done with the press of a button. With MIDI, I can be creative and find inspiration and new avenues for composition in a way that just cannot be done with audio. What if I start recording something one day and then the next day I listen to a melody or chord progression I recorded and want to make some changes. With audio, I would have to record that track all over again. Not so with MIDI. I get why some people prefer the "unquantized" feel of audio. But it's not enough of an issue with me compared to the vast benefits of recording MIDI.

Ha! Comment n2. In your face YT algorithm! 🎉 it’s training 😊 Midi helps me a lot to run notes (not a great performer), so I capture first playing Push pads. Next, I pre-automate some designer-music tweaks (Subsequent 37 VST many, even Model D automate velocity with mouse, fixing/improving performance). Then main phunn happens. I run it to record and mess with other synth knobs and sliders more, making dozen unique takes. Next, find the best take, and may edit to pick few happiest accidents from other takes. Designer music 😂 FX are on when I jam initially and record, so I do “perform” close to what it ends but program final FX over raw and ready synth recording.s It’s a blessing to have whole computer and DAW while enjoying live interaction with hardware synths. Kills me people still limit to DAWless. Isn’t it better to stay creative with all the tools you want? Push 3 breaks the last bridge - standalone project is the same as DAW project. I have many hardware synths and just one Push3. Designer Music heaven! Just want Push3 Mini 20% pocket size and/or Ableton iPhone version 😂 So far OP-Z for travel and still Korg Gadget (which exports direct Live project). Good talk mate! Synth mafia loves gear reviews we all love that … to watch. This is important + inspiring workflow talk you drive. I hope can help ppl out of the woods. You do have lots of sounds and sht already, improving workflow is what will help making more/better music, that you want.

Great stuff presented even greater! Thanx! I have a Maschine+ that I wonder if can be used somewhat similarly as the Push. Could you make a comparison video? Anyway - I struggled with my DAW setup for years before realizing that my flow is live, not DAW. So now I have a DAW-less setup with a Onyx mixer being able to record to SD card at the click of a button. Still ending up with files, renaming etc. to Logic Pro. What would you suggest I do from here to complete my workflow?

Thanks such a great review! Have recently sold most of my gear for a modular system, small drum machine, two effects pedals and an audio interface. I'm constantly jamming and many of those jams are captured in Logic. But I rarely go back into Logic to elaborate those ideas into songs/arrangements. Was considering a Push 3 some time ago (I'd be happy with the controller, can always upgrade later) but had to take another step first (sell all the old gear). Now I have no issues jamming on my current setup that's so enjoyable but the next step of further elaboration is a bit blocked. What you have established is a viable path of least resistant option. Going to watch this video again! Thank you! Agree with you on Midi .... I'm happy with a live audio take.

i used to take a sub par laptop to go around sketching but it was a pain cause laptop touchpads suck and carrying a mouse n all that makes you look weird. Having an actual, standalone object I could write riffs on and listen to that doesn't require all these displays is actually a positive thing if it's all integrated into the ableton setup. Obviously you're not recreating daft punks alive concert on this thing in a day, but having something that isn't distracting that you could whip out and sketch out some midi lines too or shape a couple sounds sounds pretty amazing. I personally don't got 3k CAD for one at the moment(with the taxes and whatever else), but if I did have a spare cash I think this is something i'd be into 100%.

For example, are you using Push for your interface, or do you switch to another Interface when you are working out of your DAW? Does the in/out solution work just the same when you are not in Standalone? I have a Gen 2 Focusrite 18I8 which has adat In but not out. Yo!! Thanks for watching! Let me try to answer as best I can Yes, the Audiofuse 8x in/out with ADAT works perfectly in standalone yes, I’m currently using Push3 + ADAT as my audio interface without anything else The only caveat here is that with that setup you have no phantom power, so if you have say a condenser mic that needs phantom power, you probably won’t be able to use it. I’m using a dynamic mic and it’s working great🤘🏻 Really happy with the setup overall❤️

I don't use Ableton to finish a "song" and I learned that the songmode of sequencers like the Squarp Hapax or the internal one in the 1010 Blackbox basically stopped me from finishing music, that's why I went back to the Polyend Seq that can just "link" one part to the next without any menu diving. As I want to stay 100% dawless (I look at computer screens all day, it's tiresome) ... what's the songmode of the Push 3 like? How can you make a song out of those snippets you recorded? Also I don't agree on your anti-MIDI attitude - I record everything in MIDI, including the little quirks and mistakes. And I even control some of my pedals like the Hologram Chroma over MIDI so I can totally make that little knob twist repeatable. But then again, I'm not a pianist, I rely heavily on adjusting a note length, position or pitch after the recording, maybe that's why I embrace MIDI so much. Also I have quantization always off.

So If I had the controller version I´d need to set things up and connect cables etc. What I love about standalone is that it´s always just a button push away from magic. I can jam on it all I want and IF I need to go to the DAW later, it´s already organized and setup as a DAW project. Best of both worlds! Thanks for watching my friend!

@@MidlifeSynthesist I updated to the latest software and can't see it as an effect that I can choose on standalone. Did you save a file on the beta version then transfer it to the push to use on standalone?

@@siaseeds8950 hi! You have to sign up for the Beta program for Push3. When you download the latest Beta version of Push 3 firmware you’ll see Autoshift in the audiofx section👍🏼

Only on iPad here so abletons always been off limits, but the stand-alone could well be a nice taste. Record into cubasis when I’m done, buy an iPad pencil & fine tune there 🤔 Or buy a MacBook Pro and use the gear I’ve already got? Choices are a bitch!!! But hay 1st world problems right!!!

I dont know about standalone, but for using it as a software controller, maschine mk3 still had the best workflow for me. I’ve been trying push3 for two months now and first of all, this hard knock buttons are kind of a deal breaker, it’s a shame, I dont have words to describe how stupid I think the person who designed those buttons are, not to talk about the people who approved it. Second, tooooo many clicks (stupid hard knock clicks) to do anything, compared to maschine mk3. And last but not least, there isn’t even a song mode so we can make a sound map and hear without doing it “live”. I’m not doing a show when producing a beat. I just wont give up because of ableton live software. Thats where maschine looses.

I was wondering about song mode as it sucks with most sequencers. Having no song mode at all in the Push 3 would be a total dealbreaker for me.

Had Push 2 twice and Push 3 because of videos lije this one...sold them every time and don't regret it at all. Completely unnecessary thing at least for me and my workflow and I just never got used to play those pads instead of real keys.

All this is great, but Push is a PITA when it comes to load instruments or samples. It totally kills my vibe. I was so turned off by it I had to return my Push

😂😂 I was waiting for this comment all morning, and… NO!😂 But for real, to each his own! Lots of people find their bliss just using a DAW and more power to them! Thanks for watching!

Sketchpad …. 1300 bux to not complete tracks … and the arm processor is something windows has abandoned… so this is an overpriced midi controller. Might as well just use the push 2
