I wish they had a brown bear instead of a panda from china, because they are not from Japan.

Ah! So the drawn out vowel in for instance スノーボード counts as a mora? Interesting.

I love your videos and this one is really excellent and helpful. However, here is some feedback on describing accents. Tarzan is not a good English word to choose to demonstrate what you want to demonstrate because a native English speaker would give more equal accent and duration to both symbols in that particular word. The way you are pronouncing it is to demonstrate more emphasis on the first syllable and a shorter, pitched down "zan." However, when I say the word, it is more even, like TAR-ZAN, both the same duration with only the pitch of the "Zan" going down, but not shortened the way you shorten it. A better English word to choose that would demonstrate what you want to demonstrate is something like "symbol" or "equal" or "swimming" or "speaking" (or really any "ing" word). Thanks for making your videos!

The characters in this anime are often tame, so be careful when using it with people you do not get along with very well.

Very helpful, I have been learning Japanese for years and I think my pronunciation needs some attention. Also I notice ビン is translated at ‘bin’ can it mean this? I only know ビン as in 瓶 to mean bottle to container?

Nice. I would actually pay for stuff like this as it makes Japanese fun instead of a soul destroying grind. Sadly there's that thing called copyright involved lol!

I know the video is about vowels, but I'm also starting to understand the pitch accent too. I noticed the difference when she says ame vs ame...they look the same in romaji, but I could tell there was a different pitch pattern.

Hey, I've got a question ! It seems like /ɯᵝ/ is fronted to /ɨᵝ/ by some speakers in certain environments (mostly after palatalized/palatal consonants)... so, is this the norm ? Or is it only a recent phenomenom ?
@devonm34003 жыл бұрын
I also noticed that in the final and medial syllables, like des(u), mas(u), and names like Suzuts(u)ki. The U isn't really deleted, but more like an extremely weak and short version of the vowel you described.
@gayanimegirl48743 жыл бұрын
@@devonm3400 Indeed, it's called a devoiced vowel. The vowel "i" can also be devoiced, as in "yamasita". You should check out the wikipedia article on Japanese phonology for more info : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_phonology

Man, "downstep" is such an unintuitive word for what is described in here. I wonder why that was the word agreed upon, something like "upstep" would make it more obvious.
@michaels30033 жыл бұрын
It means the pitch is quickly lowered (from one mora to the next one). How is this a naming problem?
@neuto3 жыл бұрын
@@michaels3003 From the examples here (2:23), only the initial high type words have a downstep *only*. The mid-high ones have a rise in pitch first, which I'd say is the more critical characteristic. The final-high ones don't even appear to have a downstep (disregarding the particle).
@klaus-heinzmorales44484 жыл бұрын
Awesome video, by the way, could you please explain in a video how the pitch accent is pronounced in a sentence? I mean, each word is pronounced separately, or as a whole word? Thanks, God bless you 👍
