Nice detail on the first breakdown but at the try was scored by the attack threatening the dive and defence not marking their man.

Link can definitely fly on the short side quickie with less risk. Getting wingers in and links on sweep plays obviously more risky

Alternatively she could of just fed the ball back to the dumper..picking up and running back to the onside player would not of been the right option
@canadiancontent35213 күн бұрын
As a defending team i also think the link should step back in and force the pass but I guess they are focused on marking their opposite so they can’t tell if their middle is getting beat

@touch.screen yes. Imagine 33 dump after fading right, link runs in like ML, then a) cuts outside opposing links outer shoulder and gets ball, or b) ball goes to winger

That whole game was about stricking everyone down at almost every touch.. It set the tone for the rest of the TWC sadly. That specific defender ended up having a knee injury due to a very touch made from the side and it was not even penalized.
@giuliomela14548 күн бұрын
@@touch.screen Recently I noticed that this kind of "borderline hard touches" made at the 7 meters just to destroy the balance of the attacking player have become very common and, to my surprise, are very much tolerated by the referees. The WC was no exception. You can argue the defender was trying to use the attacker's momentum to go back, but in reality, it seems to me he's just trying to unbalance her. Shouldn't the touch be made with the "minimum force" possible? She made a great job in winning the ruck nonetheless, great running line.

I agree it’s good as a tailored defensive play against specific teams and specific ball players, possibly also limited to early in the game too. It’s a simple surprise play, but dangerous if used more than 1-2 times in a game, so you surely need to be able to revert to policy.
@glenjamin8Ай бұрын
Good teams would expose it after the first time so it isn’t a defensive strategy they would sustain throughout the match, more a novelty rarity

It can be dangerous. But 80% of the time, teams head open side anyway. And as long as the snipe is early enough, the play gets shutdown before it can be completed.... So i reckon it's gutsy but brilliant defence

As a north American who 1st played gridiron I’m bout it bout it. Teach your players to Read the play and go for it. Same as a defensive back reads the QB and makes a play or a linebacker reads the run and snipes into the backfield. But in the end it depends on the players ability to read the play. I’ve been told I do this decently because of my gridiron background. But I will say that the instincts of different sports, including union can be counter productive. Case in point union players tendency to come up as a line on the 1st few touches and get caught backpedaling for 50 metres and energy stores depleted by the time they get to the goal line. You rightfully pointed out the way the sweeper caught and handled the ball contributed to the successful snipe. This reminds me of the Springbok system where the wing has leeway to step in and blow up the centre if he reads it well; usually a no no in union; most forms of the code id imagine. Teach systems, or policies, but encourage players to trust their instincts to make plays, but then $h!t on them when their instincts suck!

when you're defending it, and try to hold up, what if they make the touch? Can you do anything because you can't pull out or are you just trying to pull corner after the touch is made?
@touch.screenАй бұрын
You are just sort of close enough that when they dive for the line you can get them but if they try to touch you, you can dodge it. When they are that close to the line you will get away with it because by the time the refs thinking about penalising your inside player has recovered and can make the touch.

Japan Mens 30's ran something visually similar at WC, but utilised shortside link coming out the back on a passive line on openside. Ends up being a more standard sweeper passive i.e. the wing isn't doing anything funky, but still cool nonetheless. Watched it live and had to watch it back on the stream to see what happened. Can find it at 25:35 in their game against SA
