How is it mounted just a few through bolts?
@ClayBabcock
@ClayBabcock Ай бұрын
There are 4 bolts on either side of the sprit, and two bolts on the dolphin striker. It’s incredibly secure; obviously you can stand on it or it’ll take the full load of a symmetrical or code zero Sale in pretty much any breeze

@markparent5479 Ай бұрын
@@ClayBabcock thanks for the info. Size of bolts? 1/4? Into the hull ya? I'm thinking of doing the same but curious on loads from code zero. Not doubting it, trying to do it myself. Boat size? Thanks!
@ClayBabcock
@ClayBabcock Ай бұрын
@@markparent5479 i’d have to go back and look, but they were at least a quarter of an inch, maybe 5/8 or metric equivalent. Like most boats, our boat is very strong there due to general construction, and the fact that the two sides of the hull and meet the deck in a triangulated structure, giving immense strength I’ve never ever worried about the loading.

Hi, Clay. Your refit came out quite nicely. What foam do you recommend here?
@ClayBabcock
@ClayBabcock 8 ай бұрын
Hey there Nick. I honestly don’t remember. I bought it from a foam upholstery shop in Minneapolis. It was fairly high dancy but very supple, and I think about an eighth of an inch thick I didn’t use it everywhere, but that area was going to look terrible unless there was something underneath it to smooth it.

Wow! Are these people from Kansas? Chutes are unclipped at the pole-end of the guy, halyard dumped and the chute is retrieved with the SHEET and pulled UNDER the BOOM! Down the hatch! Or you can use the St. Francis patch or EVEN in light-to-moderate air, the "weather (guy first) take-down". Krikeys! These guys need coaching. Nobody of this level of (in)competence should try this in anything over 4 kts. :-D

ARE THE J=´70s much faster up wind?
@ClayBabcock
@ClayBabcock Жыл бұрын
At WYC the J70s start 12 minutes before the PHRF 1 boats, they are always on the downwind as we come up to the mark.

Clay, I was surprised to see how much draft your main has for these very light conditions. We are trying to flatten the main in particular noticing some of the other boats seem to be able to point much higher than we can. Do you have any guidance on how to best judge sail shape for the best VMG in these conditions? Thanks, Dan
@ClayBabcock
@ClayBabcock Жыл бұрын
Hey Dan! Job #1 is to keep flow. More shape generates more power, but too much and the flow detaches from the leeward side of the sail and everything become drag. So that is close to our light-air mode; we know flow stays attached. Pointing is light air can be a trick; its a combo of what boatspeed (and resulting AWA and AWS) you can generate, and how well your foils work. In this 4-5 knot stuff we tend to foot every so slightly... the extra boatspeed (and resulting increase in AWS) more then make up for the loss of point (angle).

Were you able to purchase this in the States or did you have to order it directly from Gold Service Rigging? I am restoring an Alden 44 cutter over in Knife River, MN and this could solve issues I am having with the original anchor set up.
@ClayBabcock
@ClayBabcock Жыл бұрын
Hi Tim. I bought it straight from Gold Service Rigging. Dealt with them directly, and they are very easy to business with, and in English. At the time I had to arrange for my own shipping, now they will do this to make the process easier.

Cool data you're able to track there - what setup are you using?
@ClayBabcock
@ClayBabcock Жыл бұрын
It is data captured by the Sailmon MAX setup on the mast. All the data (GPS, compass, sensors) is sent wirelessly to the Sailmon app and then the cloud. Adding videos, the system matches the time stamps to sync it in the right place. You can pick what data you want to see. In this other video we have COG and not heel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKm0ZYeGoNtqe9k

Our First 25S suffers when you let the transom drag, you can hear the turbulence in the wake, so we are always trying to move ballast forward. Normal crew practice, as in most boats is to move as little as possible and in light wind get some weight on the low side for a bit of heel. Thank you again for the video Clay!

Happy new year 2023! I am also a happy owner of a First 260 (25.7s), sailing in the spanish Medierranean. There's a couple questions for you: when sailing upwind, it seems your boom is not centered, but at maybe 20º... is this because you're saling at close reach and not close hauled? Second question: what is the brand and model of the display on your mast? Gracias y buena proa! (thanks and "good bow!" - wishing you fair winds in spanish) ;)
@ClayBabcock

Hello! It was blowing 15+ knots, so the traveler was down to help keep the boat flat. Normally upwind it would be up to center the boom as you note. The display is a RaceGeek D10. I great device but sadly the company did not survive the pandemic. Good sailing to you, you have a great location!

I've been meaning to record one of these passages. I had one where after the bridge, power lines suddenly appeared to be dipping lower than the bridge. The skipper made a sudden maneuver to one of the supporting towers where the cables were obviously higher. Two minutes of terror, but that's what makes sailing fun. There should be dozens of these on YT, but this is only one I found - and not many views :(

Amazing how many people comment without any actual knowledge of what's going on. First I sail on planing boats almost for a living, Class 40, Figaro, Fareast 28r, J70 U20, etc etc. I know what it is. Second the 27.7 routinely has flat water speeds in the mid-upper teens in 25+. Every owner has experienced it. We where not quite there on this day with 20. Now pay attention here. Unlike most planing boats, the 27.7 has a submerged bow knuckle. I'll wait for you to go look it up. Most planing boat do not, to promote the bow popping up. So when the 27.7 starts to plane at 9 knots, the bow stays under water until about 12-13. Then it pops. Class dismissed.
