also soaking only for 12 hours, then keep wet in gunny bag for another 24 hours. Only put the seeds to tray after it germinate which is after the 12+24 hours

all the comments leading to to the same problem. You need to properly sanitize trays and also deal with the flying bugs that carry fungi. Purifying water for animals and plants is always a challenge. Remember, everything in Africa is tougher than in other parts of the world. Read up on biosafe fungicides and algaecides. It will give you good ideas for solving your problem. Education and implementation are so important. I found that almost every country has at least one genius who works in the government, but most people do not ask for advice. And usually, when one person has a problem, there are many with the same problem.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/onqpeaCEr959pbs has good advice but the key issues seem to be the racks are not alternating front to back the tray holes are not large enough, are in the wrong location and not kept clear of grains so water is standing, you need to use worm tea to maintain bacteria balance and limit watering to three times per day best of luck

Im looking at feeding my chickens this way. Thankyou for your experience. I agree with the advice that the holes would be better in the lower parts of the tray but all the other videos ive seen use flat trays. But i have no experience with this yet. Leaving the seeds in water to long is how you ferment the seeds for food. As for the apple cider vinigar (ACV) im more experienced. You can ferment your own. All you need is apples, sugar, unclorinated water and some apple cyder vinigar mother. What you bought wont work. Go to a health food shop or to someone who already has some they can give you. The clear is not alive. You need the cloudy ACV with strands in, it these strands that are the mother. Its still alive. Mine has grown a scobi on the top. And makes stronger vinigar as its got older. The mother feeds on the sugar and apples turning the water into vinigar. The cores and skin is the best part some eat the apples and save these parts for the ACV. I Use the hole apples cut up. After a few brews the apples turn into a pulp. This pulp can be fed to the chickens but it makes the most butiful apple sauce. As for using im not sure what the purpose is in the hydroponics. If it is to clean and seteralise i would have thought white vinigar would be more suitable. ACV has many madicinal properties. And is good in the waterers. Some use this to control algea in the stock waterers. Personnally i dont use it all the time. But at any sign of illness or parracites i ues ACV and crushed garlic in the water and its usually works so long as you practice all the other good husbandry paractices too. If you know some one with an apple tree and can get sugar once you have the mother it is very cheep and healthy for the family to. There are many youtubes on fermentation and ACV. I have a 27lt fermentation kit now but started with glass bottles and chease cloth or paper towel and rubber bands as a lid so it can breath and off gass. I what i do 2/3s fill it with fresh apples choped and the apples from the previous ferment if younhave them (some fill the container) Leave about 1/5 of ACV from previous ferment. I leave about a 1/3 of the container with apples in it so not actually 1/3 by volume. Fill with syrip 10 lt water to 480ml of sugar i use raw sugar. Disolve sugar in some hot water then add the rest of the warm water. Dont add hot water to the living culture or use anything metal. Caution it becomes alcohol before it turns into vinigar. It can over flow so put somthing under the container in case Dark and warm place is best. Organic paales are best. Chemicals can interfere with the process. There used to be special cider apples i just use what i can get.

There's also a better chance of success with flat bottom trays rather than grooved ones. Water sits in the grooves creating pockets of moisture promoting mold. Whereas it is absorbed or drained on a flat tray laid on an incline. This is great information all around. Great approach!! Thanks.

From what i can see in the video.. there are allot of things that you do that is wrong and cause the mold and fungus to spread. Use flat trays! Clean the ground from those molded and infested barley! They will spread ... the room has to be ventilated so that fresh air can come in, and the temperature should be stable as well as the humidity.

Don't give up use flat trays because those trays hold water in those ridges and causes water retention which causes the seeds to rot and leads to mold. don't use anything else just water and flat trays you are over complicating things.

I've made it a lot at home, but it produced mold only when too much water accumulated on the bottom of the box. First, you will wash the grains 2 or 3 times well with just water then leave them in water for about 10 hours, finally spread them on trays. Also, the grain you spread on the trays should not be too thick. It needs to get some air. The sun definitely dries it. Finally, my advice is to try in small amounts. With time you will experience a lot and make the right decision. Growth rate varies depending on the type and production of seeds. I tried it in different countries. Their growth rates were different.

Thanks for the video showing your experiment. Today is my first attempt to try barley sprouting for chickens and I'm looking at every video on the subject. I am going to try a few drops of bleach in the first soak (we use Rosy brand at home as it's cheap, but has the same active ingredient) and I am going to soak them straight in the bucket rather than use a gunny bag. The barley I got here in Nakuru had a lot of floating seeds, maybe 10-15%, when I washed a few handfuls in a bucket. I read that they should be removed as a potential source of damaged grain that won't sprout and can go mouldy. Good luck with your farm and thanks again for sharing your insights.

@@oak_farm4286 I am a few weeks in now to feeding chickens sprouted barley. They like it best at 6 days from first soaking when the green shoots are small, but I took some to 8 days when experimenting without any mould. My process is... Day 1 Morning. Tip my loose grains into a bucket of water, give them a good swirl and let it settle. Scoop off anything that is floating (usually about 10% of the grains, some stalks and a couple of dudus, I throw this waste to my chickens who happily eat it). Drain the water, tip the grains into a freshly washed (with bar soap) container that has a lid. Pick out anything you can easily see is not a good barley grain. Cover it with water about an inch deeper than the grains and put in about 5-10 drops of bleach (I use Rosy brand which is 3.65% sodium hypochlorite, Jik is 3.5% sodium hypochlorite and much more expensive for the same active ingredient). Day 1 Late Afternoon. Drain the water, rinse with fresh water, pick out anything that doesn't look like a good grain (I usually find some broken grains, grass seeds and a dudu or 2), drain again, replace the lid. Day 2 Morning. Rinse with fresh water, drain, replace the lid. Day 2 Late Afternoon. Rinse with fresh water, drain, replace the lid. Day 3 Morning. Tip the grain onto a freshly cleaned sprouting tray (I use Kenpoly Bamboo trays as I only do 250g per day), water and drain, cover loosely with clear plastic (I use bread packets or toilet paper packets that I cut along the seams to make big rectangles). Day 3 Late Afternoon. Water and drain the grains, replace the plastic cover. Day 4 Morning. Water and drain the grains, replace the plastic cover. Day 4 Late Afternoon. Water and drain the grains, replace the plastic cover. Day 5 Morning. Water and drain the grains, leave the tray open. I then just water the grains late afternoon and morning until they are ready. It's quite a lot of work for me with just 10 chickens as it's only replacing 500g of bought food per day which is around 35 shillings, so once I deduct the cost of barley I am only saving ~15 shillings per day. I will probably continue though as they seem to like it and it gives them some food variety.
