I got my RFX a couple of days ago and so far it keeps up really well (within a couple of degrees) when compared to my wired Smoke unit also made by ThermoWorks. No long delays and big temp jumps at all. Firmware version on my Gateway (as of 11/26/24) is 1.1.29-46 and firmware version on my wireless probe is 1.2.1 What were the firmware versions on your units when you made this video?

Great comparison! It would be ideal to check the accuracy of the measurement. I checked when boiling water and none of the thermometers showed 212 degrees. Some thermometers stayed at 203 degrees, some at 208-209.

What's the boiling temp of water where you live? Unless you are right at sea level it will be under 212.

Great review! I'd love to see one discussing the Billows fan more in depth, and how the entire system interacts as an ecosystem. In that same vein, Combustion just updated their probes (ambient sensor further from the meat) but more importantly also announced both a wireless digital grill gauge/wifi bridge and a wireless fan - huge update to their ecosystem. Would even be cool to see a head to head of these two 'ecosystems' as the new Combustion products become available. Full wireless vs half wired, grate clip ambient vs upper dome ambient.

The Maverick Pellet Grill is over $4,000 and looks like nothing special. You could save well over $3,000 by buying a nice pellet smoker and putting in a couple of big smoke tubes especially if they are filled with wood chips. Humm, I think Ill take my own advice. LOL I have been using pellets but now Ill switch to chips and lets see what happens. Has anyone tried this before? Let me know. Thanks 44,000

Perhaps. But you would need to consider cooking area and steel thickness in the calculation.

Love this video! Should the internal of the brisket be at 150, or should the oven be at 150? I did the water pan test and despite the oven temping at 160 degrees, the water is dropping to 140 degrees. Thank you in advance! This is great!

Great video and review, thanks for sharing. My favorite part of them not adding the ambient sensor to every probe is they pass along the savings to us. The RFX probes retail at $89 each vs meat 2 plus/pro which are $129 each. I basically never use the ambient probes on mine anyways, if I need ambient temps (which is not needed for things like pellet smokers that already have it) I use my fireboard anyways, so this is an alternative to that with the wired temp. At the cheapest per probe price this makes this so much more cost effective if you want a lot of probes. I currently have way too many probes, have a fireboard 2 (technically 2 since my LSG Pellet smoker has one too)... though on the wireless end I have a meater block with 4 of the original probes and I have 2 meater 2 plus/pro probes. They both have serious but different problems. My original block probes are starting to fall apart, with one of the probe actually separating. I have some high temp food safe sealant to try (have read others try that) but it's really annoying about a year and half in they start falling apart (beyond my warranty too). On the other end the new meater 2 plus/pro probes have all sorts of connection issues. Tested on both my wife's phone and my own across about 7-8 months and many cooks they almost always lose connection and would not reconnect. This is across both probes. I spent an hour on Meater support chat to finally get them to send me two new probes. At least the probes if not the bases. Same problem. I finally realized that when they disconnect and won't reconnect I have to force quit my Meater app on my phone and restart it... it will then work for a few minutes before losing connection again. That's even with the bases just outside my smoker door. It really defeats the purpose on long cooks when I can't rely on alarms, passive data, etc. Barely more convenient than just sticking a probe in there and I've fallen back to my fireboard 2 wired probes multiple times due to this. At this point I don't want to go through more hours of support again, last time I asked for a refund and they said they could only do that within 30 days. Maybe new base stations would work but I still think the odds of BOTH base stations being broken or faulty seems unlikely. This connection issue does NOT happen with my Meater block probes, but those I can't use on high heat scenarios and are falling apart. So yeah not impressed with Meater. I know others have good experiences and my meater block probes work fine enough (if I put the block close enough), though after just over a year they started falling apart so wouldn't recommend either to others from my own personal experience. So I was super excited to see the RFX probes be announced as well as the Fireboard Pulse. I love my Fireboard 2 and the UI is just top notch. Never had an issue with any component about 3+ years in, including running the fan first on my Kamado and now my LSG Large IVS. The problem with the Pulse is they went the other direction than RFX. They pack in a Bluetooth and a low frequency radio in each probe, along with the ambient probes... This makes them $150 retail. Additionally they are not rated to 1000 degrees like the RFX and the Meater 2 plus/pro which I refuse to get a new probe I can't use for grilling ever. So I ordered my RFX 4 pack a bit ago and get it in a week. As long as the connection is as good as it's supposed to be with the low frequency radio (and your video here seems to support it) and the low per probe price I think it's going to be perfect for me. Hopefully it works well and I can buy more probes so when I cook a bunch of chicken breasts or something I can track of them, would be nice to do that. The other feature that I'm really in love with despite being so simple is the color rings they have for the probes and the ability to correlate that in the app. When I have my 4 Meater block probes and 2 meater 2 plus probes it's really hard to keep track. The Meater block ones have a number etched on the tail end which is a PITA to see often and even the little metal tab is annoying to look at and the ones not in the blocks have no identification. If I'm cooking a lot of things and lose track of what is what the probes essentially become useless. The Thermoworks color ring system seems like it will work great and is super simple, visible, and adjustable. Such a simple thing that I'm looking forward too. I'm going to have waaay too many probes now =/

@@SmokeTrailsBBQ I was really excited for the Pulse. I absolutely love my Fireboard 2, best UI/interface of all, both on mobile and an amazing web app. Though at $150 a pop if the RFX works for me I'll pass, have already spent over $1k on probe stuffs. I get what they did, the dual radio + ambient probes but I'd rather pass on those and pay less per probe like the RFX. Also it will only go up to something like 835 degrees for 3.5 minutes and still be safe and I refuse to get another probe that won't grill. I think it will be amazing for what it does though and amazing software. I also like how they are color coded, though the color rings for RFX are kind of genius.

I just had to pull my brisket off my pit boss pellet smoker. Issues with temperature. Was set for 200 (it's the split gas/pellet) because it always has run a bit hot, but it was 375 and climbing. It had just been cleaned (I clean it every other cook). Same pellets, similar size brisket I used in the past. I just have no idea whats causing it. Going to see if I can finish in the oven. Perhaps it's time for a proper upright if im going to do brisket.

Just got mine this past Saturday. Looks promising. I'm not missing a display on the gateway, but I am missing this one thing I've complained to TW about. Make a silicon sleeve for the gateway or the dot, or whatever, so that you can just stick it on a smoker or weber without melting the danged thing. See Combustion's big display thing.

Would like to see you do a test of how long the batteries last in your probes. I have 4, 2 lasted 12 hours, 2 lasted 8 hours. The settings did not make a difference. Sadly, one person on the smoking meat forum is reporting his batteries have degraded down to 3.25 hours from 12 hours after 9 cooks. This is far from the 60 hours promised on a full charge.

Just got mine a few days ago and im trying it on a pork butt smoke right now. The transmission rate and connection quality is awesome, but I have gripes with the app. Having to manually type in my WiFi info EVERY TIME and not being able to read the Gateway ambient sensor and the actual temp probe together in the same session is kind of a step back from your typical temp probes. Hopefully they stay on top of their updates. Great product otherwise.
