You put flex seal on the shell window. How is it holding up? Any tips/thoughts there?

I've been watching youtube videos for 2 years trying to figure out how to best convert my truck bed w/topper into a livable space. I love your design. Thank you. I realize I'm late to the party, but as far as your leak at the boot, I would suggest using the silicone caulk on the outside of the camper where the boot meets the cab and the cap. This way the water never enters the interior of the truck/camper. If you silicone the inside, the water will still get into the area between the boot and the truck and possibly allow the metal of the cab to rust.

I just love you and your build! Fantastic job! I appreciate the time you took to show us everything and explain things thoroughly. You organized and designed everything well, and your attention to detail is a major plus! I also appreciate your sense of humor 💛 I am split between a setup like this and a van. I think a truck offers more versatility in the long run, but even though I'm not very big of a person, crawling through the pass through all the time would get on my nerves personally. Also just not being able to stand up if I want to. I love that you did such an excellent job creating the pass through and thank you for showing it because that is why I watched your video. The pass through would be a requirement for me if I went the truck route, and I'd prefer a truck for overall better driving capability in all regions and climates. But nothing really beats the comfortability of a van in terms of functional space. Although a truck is a more low-cost build and more stealth. As you can see I'm not 100%. Did you ever consider a van or were you always convinced you wanted to make the truck work?

Not everyone wants to drag a huge camper along behind them I don't I like to go fishing an have a shell on my silverado just because of my gear.its a dry compact area that if I choose to stay at the fishing holes I go to I've got a place to lay my head and rest in a fairly comfortable place without paying for spot to camp or a motel hotel lodging area and I am right on top of the honey hole I'm fishing at after a few hrs of rest.theres alot of uses for my topper groceries stay dry luggage stays dry I don't have to worry to much about someone picking my small floor jack up an walking away with it or my fishing gear because it locks ,yea if they really wanted it they could break into it but that goes for most thing wee have in life. I like his set up .quick and easy to set up or break down if he needed to.an if he is comfortable an happy why not .an that f150 will likely be on the road for 20 or so years.especially if he keeps it maintained.

I also use a towel when it rains really hard for a slow dribble in my old crawl thru boot. This boot is still working fine since purchasing it in 1992. Its not a full window boot -- it just fits the sliding window opening. My older canopies had the sliding side windows like yours. They are useless when it rains or snows. So I cutout a plexiglass sheet to fit the window opening (when fully opened) with a 2 inch overlap bolted thru so that the window was securely locked shut. Then I installed a small vent in the plexiglass that I can leave open even in the rain and snow. My newest canopy has mini louver windows instead, I still use an icebox but I like your flat solar panels and will look into them and perhaps a refrigerator.

Great video. I have same truck and Leer topper and want to do a build. However I have a 40 gallon aux fuel tank installed in front of box. It is just below top of bed. But if I create a platform type bed, the clearance is so minimal from the top of the ceiling to my bed. Kind of claustrophobic…and not lots of room. Hmmm. Have to keep experimenting. I like the idea of sleeping in the bed as it is just me and don’t want to buy and travel with a bumper pull camper, as usually have a boat hooked up. Thank you for a great design video

Hey Thanks! Diagonal is the way to go with a short bed. 👍 I considered them as well as 8’, but finally settled on 6.5’. Just enough room for me to stretch in the morning and touch the tailgate with my toes. 😁

The efforts that go into making these videos! It's hard to appreciate the details from where I sit until you showed the behind the scenes. I understand that the editing is not a quick task either. Any chance that second fan's blade is striking something? If not, is it a problem with the bearing?
@TravelingTroy5 ай бұрын
Honestly, this video was way easier to make than my previous videos in Houston. It’s just so hard to find a quiet spot in a large city, that I found myself doing voiceovers to eliminate most of the background noise. Very time consuming. Here, there wasn’t a soul within 2 miles of me. 😁 Zero distractions. 👍 I came to the same conclusion on the dome fan. I used canned air from inside and out to try and blow out a possible blockage, with no luck. Must be the bearing. If this was my desk fan, I would naturally just take it apart and find the issue, but with it sealing a large hole in my roof, I’ll let it be for now. 😉 Thanks for continuing to follow along. 👍

@@TravelingTroy Can you get a finger or pencil eraser on one of the fan blades to see if it spins freely without rubbing anywhere?
@TravelingTroy5 ай бұрын
@@kathrynarnold1966 I can visually see that the fan blade spins without obstruction. If I were to take the lid off 😬 and inspect it from the roof, I may see what is causing the issue. The increased noise is coming from the motor, bearing or something caught on the upper portion of the fan. It currently is very far down on my todo list. 😁

Great video Troy, thanks for sharing. We took the Astro van to Death Valley NP on the 4th of July break. It was 128* Hey, I was asking on FB Messenger, maybe you could post here. Is it best to cut the sheet metal on the roof before I insulate the roof? I am going to insulate the van with four layers. In my mind it would be better to cut the hole in the roof before insulating. I worry, however, that once the insulation is installed it would be difficult to cut the hole in the roof sheet metal. Thanks in advance and we look forward to seeing videos of your travels. Scott
@TravelingTroy5 ай бұрын
@@DarronSanderson OMG!! That is HOT!! I’ve never been to Death Valley NP. What did you do while there? As for the van, I would install everything on the roof (fans, solar..etc) before installing the insulation. Our process has always been to try to do the exterior stuff first. It’s way harder to clean up metal shaving from cutting holes when you already have stuff in the van. 👍
@DarronSanderson5 ай бұрын
Thanks, Troy for the knowledge on the best way to install the fan. The main goal to do the drive from AZ to Death Valley was just to take a pic of the tempastat and it said 128. ☀️ The signs around there alone are worth the trip. “Lowest election”, “Sea Level”, “High Temp Warning Death possible”. The view from Zabriskie Peak was surreal and majestic. Lucius filmed Star Wars scenes there. The thermostat is at “Furnace Creek”.

@TravelingTroy5 ай бұрын
@@will35010 Hey there, thanks for checking out the video. I have thought about possible solar add-ons and the cab roof is for sure an option.
