I’m sure McLaren have figured out a way to make front suspension adjustments easy for the mechanics. Just having the spring/damper units upside down doesn’t mean the adjustment has to be at the bottom. And who knows what opportunities the elimination of the heave spring has opened up?
@dmaharry79762 жыл бұрын
Great analysis. I am worried about MCL. Their car looks rather basic and under developed. Hope I’m wrong and that they turn up with a winner
@SomersF12 жыл бұрын
Well, from the perspective of the two main cars that have been launched I’d say they’re pretty much on par (at least), especially as McLaren haven’t really shown their entire hand.
@dmaharry79762 жыл бұрын
@@SomersF1 thanks Mathew. Do you reckon their suspension change will pay dividends or pose more risk as has been proven in the past ?

We now have experience of both Ferrari and Mercedes powered cars. Can anything be inferred from this regarding the shape & size of the new power units or is cooling philosophy dominant?
@SomersF12 жыл бұрын
The powerunit dimensions and their cooling characteristics haven’t changed dramatically, only the E10 fuel switch really has a bearing on this. As always though, aero dominates and concessions will be taken in this direction in regards to design. I just find it interesting that we’ve got so many different interpretations so far.

Side pods appear too far fwd. Not sure advantage to add such a restricted solution. Design cooling for server PSUs, we'd never do that, always look for laminar flow and maintain attachment along chassis as long as possible. Doesn't make sense. Maybe drives like a brick
@SomersF12 жыл бұрын
The axle is as far forward as the rules permit so this offsets the sidepods position relative to what others have done. There's only so much you can do in positioning of these things, especially the sidepods as you have to deal with the side impact support structures too.
@mikeplaced31112 жыл бұрын
@@SomersF1 Thank you for the education. Side inlets look flush on the video whereas Aston was raked backwards or did I misinterpret the image
@SomersF12 жыл бұрын
@@mikeplaced3111 the sidepod is raked back, you can see it in this image from the top. blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgN-Tj0YOs6YZ_86dqjEogJ3go5rHye99bdRH9qME-4s46nGA-aL0NC8_AQy7fj_jLZ_Favs5WSgpo24sgDkS-JxAhKDQOB2O908mY8z4CYTvzd2OlkM3wCKdb6y6_TqEnUZV1UKul7fgrwx27enN7ewj8UKodFbOydNbyIjXBZfgwTtpchBAmRdaBeFw=s7000

@@SomersF1 Thank you. Those arrow shaped louvers look set to become detached due to a 1st lap cornering incident piercing the front tire. Let's see what unfolds, and whether therr are similar ideas on other cars. I see more issues wrt flat tires than they are worth having.
@SomersF12 жыл бұрын
@@mikeplaced3111 the endplate design is heavily restricted in these regs and has been designed with impact in mind. They’re filled with Rohacell foam and their outer covering is actually quite thin.

The nose on this car is very pretty but like you I suspect it's faked. I wish it would stay this way but I'm sure they'll go down the shorter tip attached to the second element route
@defnotatroll2 жыл бұрын
You compared it to the racing point and the difference is very noticeable, why would AlphaTauri choose to lay the radiators down that horizontally? It makes the sidepods look a lot bulkier
@SomersF12 жыл бұрын
Very different approach with the floor this year though so it's not a like-for-like situation, more of just a couple of examples where we've seen this before.

Hey Matt, a bit of a leftfield question. Why did they decide to scrap separate wastegate and main exhaust pipes rule? You know of any solid reason as to why that was necessary? Back in 2016 separate pipes rule was introduced with the intention of increasing engine sound and volume, which it succeeded in doing when engine were ran in free load mode (turbine driven by mguh). I'm a bit baffled as to why now this has been reverted all of a sudden. We will now go back to 2014-2015 levels of engine sound dullness.
@SomersF12 жыл бұрын
No solid answer if I'm honest (I'll try to ask the right people for one when I can) but largely I believe it was about tidying up the rear end of the car in preparation for the return of the beam wing. Having the varied options about placement of the wastegate pipes to contend with would have made framing the regulations more difficult.

Another excellent video! Thank you for sharing these technical breakdowns, and keep them coming. I do wonder how the pushrod on the rear of the McLaren will affect handling. We already know that Ricciardo was struggling to adapt to the car, and with the changes to the suspension could mean both drivers are going to struggle with the car handling.
