I vote for the Tommy & Tuppence books. I enjoyed Keegan's Foster, but found So Late in the Day somewhat difficult/depressing.

I got a Kindle for traveling and lately I've been reading Blackwater, but it's a long book. It's difficult to balance my reading time with physical books and Kindle books. I go back and forth with Edith Wharton too. I have one of books still and debate about keeping it.

Jane of Lantern Hill is my favorite LM Montgomery book. I read it first as a child, and I’ve read it probably 10+ times over the years. I’m due for another reread soon!

I would definitely prioritize Foster! So Late in the Day is a short story collection and it's not my favorite of Keegan's.

I saw the original NT production of Arcadia many years ago with Felicity Kendall, Bill Highy and Rufus Sewell. It was quite head spinning at the end with two stories - present and past - swirling on stage and overlapping at the same time. There was a foreshadowed tragedy in both plots which you were praying would somehow be avoided. It was something like a wordy Christopher Nolan film. I hope that comes across in the text... sometimes he come across as a bit to clever-clever on the page, and you need actors to breathe some humanity into it all.

Oh, seeing the original cast would be wonderful! I wish they'd revive it with the cast from the 50th anniversary show, as they'd be good, too (Rory Kinnear, Anna Maxwell Martin, Jonathan Bailey). Plays don't always come across well in the reading, true, but it's the only method I have at the moment.

Hi Heather, I tend to place a lot of pressure on myself also. I sign up for so many challenges and readathons etc that look interesting and fun. This is on top of my Goodreads challenge, and then when I don't complete them I tend to feel like a failure. Next year I plan on just reading for the sake of reading. This may or may not defeat the purpose but how do you go about applying for ARC's? I'm in the process of starting my Bookstagram journey slowly .

Good to know that it's not just me. As to ARCs, I receive most through NetGalley, which is free to sign up for if you are on social media (big or small accounts), an educator, or work in publishing.

I'm sorry for the "strange place"/"recent events (Goodreads review)" you've been in. We all have them but they are no fun. I hope that later it affords the opportunity for growth/learning/strengthening, but in the meantime, I hope your winter break allows some healing, if that's what you need.

Many people were disappointed by Long Island, but I really liked it when I read it earlier this year - it's actually one of my favorite reads of 2024. I found it great to follow Eilis 20 years after the end of the first book. I enjoyed the way the story is built and what Colm Toibin did with the different characters in Ireland. I've heard great things about Claire Tomalin's book, and would like to read it (I had not noticed that it's been published in Paperback, which is an argument in favor of buying it).
@freshparchment
@freshparchment 25 күн бұрын
I can see that opinion of both Long Island and Brooklyn. There's an ambiguity about both that's typical of literary fiction that always leaves me feeling a bit unsatisfied. Definitely check out Claire Tomalin's book. She's been through harrowing things, but it's well worth the read.

I read seven books in November, My non fiction read Lost in Wonder made me realize when I want a spiritual book Anglicanism is the closest to my Lutheran faith. My favorites were The Girl who Drank the Moon (MG fantasy) and the first two books in The Faracre Series by Miss Reed who is Jane Austen light.

This video was a random You Tube recommendation today and am I glad it was! I absolutely loved you and your mom (I'm also a woman of an uncertain age). Some great recommendations - I've read them all except the Sansom books and the Peter Mayle books. Off the top of my head I'd recommend the Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series - she and her husband are Egyptologists working in the Victorian era. The books are cozy and lighthearted. I also really enjoy Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series; they take place post WWI, as well as Charles Todd's Bess Crawford series. Maisie was a nurse in WW1 while Bess is still working as one in the books. Jacqueline Winspear is what I call a "wordsmith" - her writing is really beautiful.

I buddy-read "Thomas Cromwell" with a friend before we went to England last month. The book presents a balanced picture of the man. For someone so concerned for promulgating the reformed faith, I can't believe some of his decisions and actions. A very detailed biography--make a bit too much so--but overall I recommend it. I may pick up some of the other books presented!

I second the recommendation of Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall. I got so enthused about what I learned I bent every ear in my friends/family circle. I got it from the library but returned it and bought my own copy because I wanted it for future reference and re-reads. His points are easy to follow and he connects the dots of information we already knew but never put together.

I could honestly see it going both ways. I wouldn't go for the mammoth Diarmuid McCullough book, though. I feel like that one would be a bit overwhelming. I was able to piece enough of Wolf Hall together because of all the other Tudor reads I've done since I was eight, but if you don't have that background a brief biography might be handy.

Once again, so many great recommandations from your mother! I have Tracy Borman's biography of Cromwell and The private lives of the Tudor on my TBR. I have a feeling that the new Mirror and the Light series is going to motivate me to read the Cromwell biography soon. There are just so many books about the Tudors! I have never read anything about Charles I and Charles II they don't interest me as much as the Tudors, even though I should feel some connection to Charles II since he spent some time in France before the Restoration.
