For linux boot. You probably just need to pass a kernel option stating that you want console output to the serial so it won't switch. I think the proxmox solution is superior regardless but thought I'd drop a note here. 5:10 Oh I see you have it in the grub.conf... so you take that and I believe you can just edit during boot and add that preboot for the debian boot. I think by pressing 'e' or something.

One note about openwrt... I'm here because I'm running merlin-wrt and it introduces weird latency after being up for 12-24 hours... I have no patience to troubleshoot why after being spoiled by a prior OPNsense router for which I'm looking for a replacement... In general I always seem to experience weirdness on linux based solutions... It's great linux supports a greater breadth of hardware... But if you can.. I recommend always going with a BSD based solution if possible. In addition.. the newer version of this having 2.5Gbps ports is pretty awesome... This device should literally last 10+ years as your internet firewall.

@8:40 Okay that's eerie... Was listening to your review and was on their site... I just had the same thought... for a little bit more money you get an extremely more capable device.. and then I hear you mention the 7xx devices... Great review. Thank you.

Hello and thank you for the great video. Do you plan on doing any new videos? I found your channel while searching for an openwrt upgrade from my old archer c6u, was thinking about the banana pi3 which you had a video on, ended up buying an asus ax4200(same soc) but i still enjoyed the video you made. Anyway, if anything, just know that your videos were great, and I'm sure a lot of people enjoyed them, especially openwrt/linux fans like me :).

I did consider using my old PC as a OPNsense system, but it would draw 180+ watts of power just for that, this device draws a maximum of 25 watts by comparison.. Running a TCO on that, it might seem expensive to invest €749 into such a device for home use. But because of the difference in power draw between those two options, and electricity costs here in Denmark being the global highest, you will have saved the initial cost of the unit, over just two years of usage! That's insane to think about.. So yeah, not an expensive investment to get into, if you feel the need for it.

I'm curious if the version of OpenWRT you were running had WiFI AP(s) with 802.11b rates turned off. This can definitely affect speeds for multicast traffic, effectively enforcing the lowest common denominator as a "speed limit" of 802.11b legacy WiFi speeds for all multicast traffic on the network. In OpenWRT prior to 19.07, it must be turned off manually in /etc/config/wireless for the radio in question. For example: config wifi-device 'radio1' option legacy_rates '0' I think maybe in newer OpenWRT versions it has been disabled by default, but I can not verify this from first-hand experience. So, I'm not 100% sure it's always assumed to be off.

This device seems to squeeze out as much performance and capability from its hardware as possible. Perhaps that's why they have so many storage options - maybe they had some IO left and couldn't use it for something beefy like another SATA/USB port but could put some extra flash on there (and it also seems handy if you use that storage a lot, so you can switch to another if one burns out). According to the wiki, it uses a 12V 2A DC input, which is lower than any other (managed) router/switch with 2.5GbE that I can find. I'm quite tempted to get me one of these...

I can't be sure, but it seems to me they made the same fundamental mistakes as Atlassian did with their wiki (the out-of-support beats called Confluence). MediaWiki - you know, the free software that powers Wikipedia - is unfortunately written in PHP, which I do think is a pity, but unlike these folks, they understood how a Wiki should fundamentally behave. First of all, you should NOT organize articles ("pages" if you want) into a hierarchy. Doing so creates a lot of mental overhead when creating an article because you have to think about how to organize all of the information in the wiki, rather than focus on the article you are trying to create. Second, you should NEVER have to create a page in order to link to it. This totally destroys the flow, since typically any article will be peppered with links to other articles. Forcing the user to stop, then try to think about where in the overall taxonomy this new article ought to live, go and create it, and come back just to finish a sentence or two, before the whole thing repeats... makes it a completly unusable wiki, in my humble opinion. Instead, the way it works on Wikipedia, and, I shall claim, any good wiki, is the following. Every article has an *identifier* that is basically just a name, and need not be the same as the heading. Usually on Wikipedia one follows the very good practice of simply using what would logically be the name of the article if it had one as its ID, except for the fairly common case when a name has multiple meanings. For example, Oslo is the capital of Norway, but other places with the same name exist, as well as a play, a film, some music bands, and so on. If you head to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oslo you will find a "disambiguation" link at the start of the article, and if you follow one of those you'll see that your route becomes one on the form en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oslo_(band). Using this convention - as well as category labels - you create a good fundament for tooling to help find existing articles that you may want to link to. But the real killer feature is that you can link to articles that don't exist. And doing so is incredibly easy. Basically you just have to, in "Norway", write something like "[Oslo] is the capital of Norway." - if that article exists, you've linked to it and it is displayed on the wiki as a normal link. However, and this is the stroke of genius, if it *doesn't* exist, it is still rendered as a link, but one that looks a little different (red instead of blue is the default, I believe), but the link *action* becomes "create the article" rather than "navigate to the article". This makes it possible to actually focus on writing at least a first draft of the article without the tooling constantly getting in the way, and *way* easier to build out the wiki over time. Obviously creating a good wiki about anything at all is still pretty demanding, but this just underscores the need for tooling that allows you to think about the content rather than how to use the darn software.

@dojohansen1238 ай бұрын
Judging by this video, it's not even a proper wiki. Articles should *not* be organized in a hierarchy, and you should be able to link to articles that don't (yet) exist. This is how Wikipedia has always done it, and it makes all the difference. In fact, try to have a look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ViperCraftGamer, and you'll see an example of what I mean (it will serve up a page explaining that this aricle does not (yet) exist, and explain that you need to be signed in to create it, but if you were signed in, it would allow you to edit it right away). The normal way to build out the wiki isn't to add new articles that nothing links to though, it is to edit an existing page, use links to existing and new (like [ViperCraftGamer] in this example) articles from there, and then the links to articles that don't exist are simply shown in red, and users can create them by clicking them.... I don't understand why others who have created wikis seem to have spent so little time learning about how the world's far and away most successful wiki implementation works. MediaWiki also has many other brilliant features, for example "talk pages" to keep discussion about article content separate from the article itself, version history, various levels of article protection (not everything is editable by everyone), and more.

Well, its been mentioned already, but LOL @ that sock fur/deadcat! Hey, it works though right? Just curious, would you use opnsense over openwrt for a gigabit connection? I'm leaning towards openwrt personally... Did you try irqbalance when testing with openwrt, or did you ever find the issue causing openwrt to perform poorly?

I did not experiment with IRQ balance. I read that BSD has problems with PPPoE performance in gigabit scenarios. I personally favor OpenWrt because I deploy those with Ansible but OPNsense is also excellent choice.
