That accent on Icelandic was really strange! definitely not a native speaker speaking it, or maybe a really rare accent on some other tiny island but most of accents have died out and just became the same!

Is this a free-thinking community of individuals, or conformist, tight and rigid? Any social issues dominating? They just look like nice people, but it's hard to tell.
@libertyboi55482 жыл бұрын
from what I can gather, faroese culture is individualistic overall but somewhat conservative in traditional values. The main political issue there is separation from denmark. Most are economically liberal, socially conservative or moderate, agrarians. Lutheran Christianity is a big part of the culture.

I'm Norwegian, Faroese sounds like a mix between Icelandic & Norwegian (Expecially similar from a norwegian dialect where people from Trondheim speaks)
This feels really down to earth. It just goes forward like a ship on the ocean, maybe prepared for war?

Icelandic has a vocabulary I understand (as a poor Danish speaker) much easier, yet the Faroese has a lilt and a clear sentence structure and words that are much clearer.

I can understand Faroese, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic and a little Swedish. I must say that this doesn't show similarities between Faroese and Icelandic. She speaks Faroese in a Torshavn dialect, and Icelandic in a Faroese dialect, but nice try tho. Faroese and Norwegian have more similarities by their pronounciations and Icelandic pronounce words more strong - but the writings look alike (i would say)

I showed this to an English friend once and he made an interesting comment: he thought Icelandic pronunciation had an Anglo-Saxon feel to it, whereas Faroese had a somewhat Gaelic/Irish lilt to it, which actually does make a fair bit of sense (especially considering the partly Gaelic roots of the Faroese, as well as geography).
@aGeilini8 жыл бұрын
I would dissmis that statement, with the fact that, That The Faroese Language only has a small handful of more words with Gaelic orgins than the Icelandic has, and that the Faroese DNA only is slighly more of British origins than Icelanders DNA. Icelandic would naturally sound more anglo saxon , because the icelandic language has retained alot of arcaic forms and sounds, that are similar to anglo saxon which Faroese or any other North germanic language havn't. That is not to say Faroese does not have similarities with Gealic. for instance the sound of "rt" in Faroese and Scottish Gealic are identical. but such similarities can be expected but mere coincidence alone.
@mariakristinasmith94238 жыл бұрын
Which was kind of my point.
@Onbehaard8 жыл бұрын
Well, being influenced by Irish is not the same as having Irish roots. Faroese is still very much a North Germanic language. In the same way that English is West Germanic even with all the French influences. I must admit I didn't hear the Irish lilt in Faroese. Could it be the fact that Icelandic still has both the voiced and unvoiced "th" sound which made your friend thought Icelandic sounded like Anglo-Saxon? The philology of Icelandic and Faroese, and all other Germanic languages for that matter, is absolutely fascinating.

I also think Faroese sounds like Turkish, but more due to the combination of "ö" and "ü" with "ch, j, sh" and the pecularian tretment of "l" and "r".
