@mytramplady the way we Faroese sing these long ballads, many of which contain more than a hundred verses, is by the leaders thinking of the all as not a performance of a song, but rather as a telling of a story.and due to the fact than most of the participants are not recuired to know the ballad other than the chorus, the participaters can just dance along and listen anchesly as the story is being told to them about epic battles of the past, tragic love stories and the feeds of valiant heroes.

It's thrilling to see an unbroken folk tradition in such robust health. Long may it continue. I must learn the language!

aGeilini, could you post Faroes lyrics for this as well as an English translation? I found one version, but you said these songs sometimes have 100s of verses and other than the first part, this one seems totally different. lyricstranslate.com/en/harra-p%C3%A6tur-og-elinborg-mr-peter-and-elinborg.html

I studied Faroese for a very short time in Copenhagen (because I am half Faroese myself). But I don't know if that place still exists. It is a long time ago, and I was so young. I don't know of any other places. Hope you find a solution, though. It's a lovely language. :)

This is where the viking age culture still sings in language and song! Come to the Faroe Islands and don't go to Tórshavn if want to experience the Faroese culture as it is supposed to be! Go the outlying islands such as Norðoyggjar and Suðuroy!!

i am from brazil.this community seems to be very closed.here in brazil we are loosing the sense of group because of the influence of individualism that comes fro usa.united we stand is going away, unfortunately.this makes me sad.keep that way, because here, one day we shall have to fight for its return.
