For me, yet another domestic Treble was & quintessentially still is, a completely near basic requirement from oor current Manager & indeed from early last October, I wis only talking aboot another Invincible season & so in that context & '' context is everything'' as dear old Alan often so rightly likes to remind us, oor most truly horrendous 3-0 defeat at Ibrokes on 2nd January, wis completely so unnecessary & totally scuppered that idea, but on a highly positive note, a then 3-3 draw with wee Dundee away, didn't get me in any way too doon in the dumps, although for sure oor current Manager should only ever be promising us that we remain unbeaten all the way through to May & the Scottish Cup Final....

We all know, or should do, that the January transfer window is the very worst window for all Clubs ''to do their business'' & because we're the Glasgow Celtic, oor record in this regard is even worse than worse, save for an isolated exception or two & guess what, oor current Manager is also never ever the very best when it comes to signing players & so stating the very obvious, we have so many ''handicaps'' to overcome when it comes to this transfer window in particular, but surely & just based on the principle of the law of averages, we have to get a couple of signings near completely spot on right from the get go & then there's all the excitement of ''welcoming home'' a near completely injury prone left back now in his 28th year.....
@frankbrennan161910 сағат бұрын
Dear old new hip Alan is COMPLETELY correct when he says '' I'm not minded to get too kind of critical'' after our performance at Dundee & of course, the demented, feverish, social meedya world ONLY ever operates in it's very own deranged, twilight, fantasy, world, where one minute we're world beaters & then the next absolutely everything is a catastrophe & so yes, £6 million Trusty had a ''skittish'' game, £9.5 million with the add on Idah, was pitifully poor yet again, Wee Callum continues to regress at an alarming rate, cut price Bernardo continues to look cut price, but we're only well on course for yet another domestic Treble & have all the excitement of ''welcoming home'' a near completely injury prone left back in his 28th year, so what could possibly go wrong there?
@georgebarr51028 сағат бұрын
Hi Frank, I remember Brendan mentioning not long after Tisdale arrived that they were already working on the January window, even though we were talking about summer signings at the time. He mentioned January as a focus. We also have plenty of money and seem much better at clearing out players, so I'm trying to stay positive. I agree that Kieran Tierney is a bit of a gamble, but I think he won’t cost much in the grand scheme of things, and the treble is almost in the bag, haha. It reminds me of when the Orcs brought in Ramsey - I was concerned because he was a top player in his prime but had injury issues and didn’t contribute much beyond that one beautiful moment. Ultimately, Tisdale has to prove himself this month, and we need new players to settle in for the Champions League qualifiers and bring home the Scottish Cup. Fingers crossed!

@@georgebarr5102 Truth be told George, I had near completely forgotten all aboot the Paul Tisdale geezer amidst all the excitement of us securing the services of 80 year old David Pleat in a scouting role & as Clint Eastwood in his legendary Dirty Harry role just might have said & so is the signing of near completely injury prone & noo in his 28th year Tierney one of Tisdale's ''recommendations'' & if so, I'm completely unimpressed or even if it's more likely the case of Tierney's desperate agent touting him to us, then I would also most seriously expect Tisdale to step in & tell oor current Manager that it's one huge big resounding NO to sign another near carbon copy of a certain James McCarthy....

@@frankbrennan1619 🤣 Yeah, I saw Tierney on Open Goal a couple of years ago talking about his injuries, and I totally agree with your point. Whenever I bring it up with other Tims, they always say he’ll single-handedly take Celtic to the next level. All we can do is hope he stays fit. As we’ve seen over the past six weeks, the Scottish game is getting even more physically demanding (and the Champions League will be even tougher as the level steps up). CCV seems to be the only one who can really handle it. Louis Barry, Bazoumana, and Orjasaeter all look promising to me, though they could just be clickbait like the endless Kvistgaard headlines-bet we sign him when he’s 81. I’m sure we’ll end up signing Barry, another WEE guy, save money on new taps!- Id like a new LCH and a Decent No6 - let Calmac slog it out with the others for 8 & 10 - pie in the sky

I am one of the very, very, very, few who said right from the get go, that paying £9.5 million with the add on, for little Norwich City's THIRD choice striker who had scored less than twenty goals in over one hundred games for them, was complete & utter madness & I remember well our own dear old Alan telling us that little Norwich City wanted about £12 million & that we ''negotiated'' them down to the £9.5 million, for goodness sake & when ALL we had to was tell little Norwich City that he's ONLY worth £4.5 million max & if they didn't accept, then just completely walk away but no, our current Manager wanted him & now, like against Dundee last night, we are paying big time for Rodgers' complete folly in paying such very silly money.

Re UEFA's financial fair play rules (or whatever they are calling it now) and the issue of being only allowed to spend 70% of turnover from next year onwards. The rule is currently 80% but my understanding is that Celtic are already within the 70% threshold and that has been Celtic's operating model (much to the dismay of many of our fans) for years now. I think the bigger issue for Celtic is that reaching/not reaching the Champions league proper carries with it a £20-£50 million differential in revenue, depending on how we go on to perform in the Europa league in the event of us dropping down. How do you budget for the next 3 years when there could or couldn't be upwards of £100 million in revenue coming in or not coming in over that 3 year period? The pragmatic approach would be to budget for not reaching the CL but that brings its own problems because when you do that and you then have 3 seasons of consecutive CL football..... You end up with a massive pile of cash in the bank that is just sitting there doing nothing. I mean I suppose there are worse problems in life than having too much money but in a football context, it is frustrating that we can't spend this money freely and we always need to be constantly spinning plates due to the fact that one poor performance in the CL qualifiers this summer and we're risking falling foul of UEFA's financial rules in the subsequent 3 seasons. Or do large cash reserves count? If our wages to turnover was to exceed the 70% mark, would the fact that we have £100 million in cash reserves cut any ice with UEFA?
@alanmorrison59814 күн бұрын
Hi thanks for that - nice summary. It's football revenue that counts towards the wage cost pillar. So money in bank helps towards the profitability pillar.

Those of us who remember such things will recollect that Moussa Dembele once accused Brendan Rodgers of 'lying' when he refused the striker an initial move away from Celtic. He claimed Rodgers promised him he could move when he wished as part of his agreement to sign for Celtic. After all a possible eventual move to a bigger league has long been one of the carrots the club offers to new signings although transfer request timing is clearly a crucial factor as well. Just a theory of course but I do wonder if something similar has happened with Kyogo. The wee man has cut a frustrated figure for months long being denied the proper service from teammates that is his bread and butter due mainly to Rodgers' system. Kyogo's agent may well have had talks with Atlanta FC and personal terms agreed before any negotiations with Celtic. The MLS may not be a big league but approaching the twilight of his career money and plenty of sun might seem a very attractive option for the wee man. But understandably this is not the time for Celtic to consider the parting of the ways and hence Kyogo was denied his wish. That would explain his uncharacteristic, unsmiling demeanour at Dingwall despite probably playing his best all-round game ever for the club .. certainly no 'downing tools' like Dembele and Édouard if the above is indeed the case! This may all be nonsense of course but is a logical explanation for Kyogo's lack of celebrations on Saturday. I certainly don't buy the rather fanciful theory that it was all down to the freezing cold weather. 😁 I suspect Kyogo will be off in the summer. It will be a sad day for the club as I don't believe he can be replaced easily. Strikers of his quality are very hard to come by even at the very top financial level .On the other hand we move on and other fan heroes will emerge I'm sure!
@Mantis_Toboggan_MD.4 күн бұрын
"We promise to let you go" is not the same thing as - "We promise to accept the first half decent offer for you" We eventually sold Dembele for £20 million in that very window that he was accusing Rodgers of "lying" So we did let him go but I think Dembele's issue was that we didn't let him go a week or two sooner and that we held out for more money.
@gezobel4 күн бұрын
@@Mantis_Toboggan_MD.Precisely which is why I used the word 'initial' .. Dembele wasn't denied his move it was only the timing (or any money offered) which was the issue. Maybe it is the same with Kyogo? Pure speculation of course but considering all the known facts we already have .. especially the bizarre stuff of Kyogo's 'signing' for Atlanta .. it does strike me as by far the likeliest explanation?

agree in general with everything jj had to say about celtics patterns of play more recently this season . bad habits from rodgers leceister days creeping in again after rogers saw the light last season and went more towards angeball . but the analysis is only looking at one side of the coin, there is the opposition , and the emergence of phased retreat pressing tactics with a higher line . in a nut shell, press to slow down transition not to get the turnover , and deny field position. this trend began 2nd half of angeball year 1 , and i remember mentioning Rodgers was walking into a perfect tactical storm of coaches that have had time to refine the tactic , and rodgers didnt really win the league until less than 8 games out . this season has been a rinse and repeat , except some elements of the opposition have been more gung ho about pressing , when there is no evidence they should be and celtics goal diff has prospered . no one in the league has a low block as a starting point , it all about slowing transition , and preventing over loads on the edges , and defending the middle of the block by stopping lateral runs . angeball started a tactical arms race and based on the net xg trend from year 1 angeball to now , the rest of the league had made in roads into pulling back celtics financial and manpower advantage , even though we wont know the impact on the points table till end of season. depending on what data sources we use , angeball year 1 , celtic had a net xg of over 1.4, year 2 , 1.35, rodgers year 1 , 1.2, currently 1.16. with different data sauces we could add half a goal to these figures , but you get the picture. whether any of this translates into a lower points hall or goal diff, remains to be seen, since shooting accuracy can negate any impact, and quite frankly some managers think they can press celtic harder higher and get away with it . sheer lunacy , pressing against quality you are always on the knife edge of disaster, there is fine line between charge of the light brigade tactics and a finely tuned balanced pressing system, as ange is finding out with the emerging train wreck at spurs
@alanmorrison598110 күн бұрын
Thanks - good analysis. As you move close to 1 xG diff so the risk factors caused by variance rise in potential impact. Playing sides 4x + the unimaginative managerial transfer merry go round means even the thick ones realise how to minimise damage v Celtic. Rodgers expects Celtic simply to "be better" but if you fill the team with bad fits to style it creaks. I think this is what we are seeing.

And do we absolutely NEED a now in his 28th year, near completely injury prone left back, who will duly & most inevitably, miss far more competitive games than he ever takes part in?
@John-qy9nw10 күн бұрын
@@frankbrennan1619 if it was any other player I would say no chance but for Tierney I would hesitantly say yes - as long as we have 2 backup left backs next season, Mitchell Frame and Matthew Anderson. Josh Doig from Sassuolo last summer would have been the better long term investment.

@@John-qy9nw And I say NO without ANY hesitation, for ALL the reasons we know.

One factor in slower play is the pitches at this time of year. The pitches are dead and bumpy, including Celtic Park, and that causes extra touches and slower passing.

The state of pitches in Scotland has ALWAYS been very poor & indeed even worse way back in the day before '' global warming'' & ''climate control'' & ''saving the planet'' were even in the minds of, never mind being spoken about on a near daily basis, by our more environmentally friendly betters, far less your average football fan & yes of course, 50mph winds or thereabouts, for example, are never ever going to have a positive influence on how the quality of a game is played, but for me in a Scottish context & the crap weather we get in July, never mind December & so complaining about the state of the pitches & the weather & other such things, is ONLY ever like a sailor complaining about the sea.....
@JohnCl10 күн бұрын
@ your kind of forgetting, Frank, that in the Spring and Summer it’s a lot warmer, and pitches dry and grass grows. The pitches are way better in the last third of the season.

@@JohnCl Never mind a Summer, do we even get a Spring in ALWAYS cold, wet, miserable Scotland?

Seen this coming! Not the first time leaving ibrox and played terrible. Barely a shot at goal. They always dominate our midfield

Celtic played the match as if we were 14 points behind rather than the other way round ! There was no fluency ...no structure ...no pressing a sub standard opposition and no idea how to play like champions . In all of my 50 years watching Celtic , ( I'm in my early 60's now ) , home away and abroad , that was the most disappointed I've ever felt after a game . Any neutral looking in knowing the stats and facts pre game ,could quite easily have called the team as " bottlers ! " This had better be a one off ....but I'm not so sure .

I am 71 and I agree John only thing I will add was there other reasons , Celtic board don't get 2 far ahead , attendance s drop, merchandise 2 SFA league looks bad 17 points on Jan 2 3 advertising losing interest !!!!! I wonder eh , you simply can't come fromwere we were at to Thursdays performance against a rangers basically reserve team , something smells from this auld cynical knowing the sofa and Celtic board of old personally

@@johnbarclay5964 Just as the Ibrokes ''cauldron'' is, for me, a complete red herring as to our abject & complete failure last Thursday, so is ANY talk of the ''Celtic board'' in this regard & as others have said elsewhere, how does oor current Manager go to the Board & ask fur mair money when they gave him a huge big whopping TWENTY SIX MILLION & the three players who cost that much, have hardly been a huge success in ANY shape or form, particularly £11 million ''statement'' signing Engels & £9.5 million with the add on Idah & when oor current Manager just might go oot & waste even more millions to bring ''back home'' a near completely injury prone left back now in his 28th year????

The answer to mid block and man marking is to send the ball long. Win the ball or let them try and play out against a press. When they drop deeper, then play football. That’s how to do it

Sean that's common sense even at amatuer or juvenile level, why didn't our elite manager and coaches do it , odds on a correct rangers score win spread were brilliant , I wonder eh!!! Only kidding we were rank simple but the theory sounds good as I still don't believe we could play this badly

We should have played a different formation to counter them , we didn't need the win as much as them ,
