Thank you for making this video. I landed on my ankle badly while working on a rebounder two days ago. It was bad enough to pass out from the pain. The emergency department did and xray to find I had an avulsion fracture on the lateral malleolus. Got a moon boot and crutches and sent back home. The physio at the ED suggested I wean off the boot after a week, which makes me nervous (broken bone!) but your video is encouraging. I am going to trust my gut and help my body to heal quickly. Not being able to run for a few weeks is going to drive me nuts though.

I am pretty sure I acquired this same injury after my 3:34 marathon in April of this year. I think it was from wearing Nike Vapor Flys all the time during my training and past 3 marathons. I overpronate and the VaporFlys were not stable enough. I am convinced those trainers wrecked my PTT. I had to take a solid 6 weeks off. Just walking and lifting. I also found a helpful video of PTT strengthening exercises. I also wore orthotics until it felt better and was able to stop wearing those. I feel 95% healed. I was able to lightly train for my 6th marathon which was Berlin but since my training was a lot lighter I ran a 3:52 and wore stability shoes (Brooks Adrenalines). I just hit 6 months and feel much better. I am still running. I just wear mostly stability trainers and that seems to keep it from flaring.
@StevoRuns2 ай бұрын
Cheers for writing and the advice. Yes I’m partly blaming my shoe selection too to be honest. My feet are weak and stiff, they feel dead and I’m putting it down to footwear choice throughout my whole life. My orthotics are in all day now and are staying in. I’ll keep lifting but as I mentioned, I’ll take out the exercises that seem to be flaring it up. Well done on working out what’s worked for you to sort the problem, I’ll hopefully get there too. Cheers
@mamalk26972 ай бұрын
@@StevoRuns It's definitely a patient injury to deal with. Do you know when you are close to healed is when you can do a single heel lift. I do miss Vaporfly fast shoes! It was difficult running the Berlin marathon in my heavy brooks! But I did not upset the PTT and I took an additional few weeks off and I feel fine. Every week with the exercises...it feels better!! Also if you start running again....just easy and slow for a long time. it affected my running gait a lot too!
@StevoRuns2 ай бұрын
@@mamalk2697 yes I can do a single leg heel lift fine on both. I’m just not letting it rest enough maybe with work, gym etc. hopefully that means it isn’t too far away if I can heel lift. 53 years old day 8 of giving up caffeine, just paused your video on day 3, to say you probably don't feel as bad as you thought, because paracetamol has caffeine in, and to ask are you still off caffeine?
@StevoRuns2 ай бұрын
Hello. Well done for quitting after probably a good few years drinking caffeine! I was corrected on the caffeine in paracetamol, they don’t all have caffeine in unless you choose the ones that do contain it. In my house as a youngster we had the Morrisons tablets and they always had it in and I assumed they all did. I am still off it it’s been a few years and I occasionally have one with caffeine and it makes me feel funny but perked up a bit. I accidentally had a large one from Costa yesterday and can’t remember ask in for decaf and it made me feel weird for hours so I keep off it now and have decaf which doesn’t affect me at all. How are you feeling after 8 days?

@StevoRuns thanks for the reply, and well done, you, I wasn't sure giving up caffeine would be beneficial in the long run. As I've never heard from anyone telling me if they thought it was worth giving up or not.. so I took to KZbin, I've seen on a other channel saying it takes at least 3 weeks before you body is free of caffeine I'll give it that long at least. Hi Stevo, I came by to your channel as I was being anxious about a calf strain 4 weeks before my marathon. And I saw you went through the same experience few years back. Just seeing if I can get some tips from you to manage it and if you think I can still do my marathon. 💔 as of today 3.5 weeks away, I still havent run for the last 3 days, do you mind telling me when you find yourself ready for long run? for me i have no pain on walking, but tinggling when running (on landing). Thanks in advance Stevo. Cheers, Kevin
@StevoRuns3 ай бұрын
Hey Kevin. Sorry to hear that buddy, something always pops up when you get near to marathon day! If I remember rightly I had a certain spot right in the centre of my calf that felt like a dead leg and it took a while. I depends on the severity of your injury I guess, if it’s just tingling now then hopefully it’s on the way to getting better and the last thing you want to do is twang it again. Stretching, icing and foam rolling didn’t help me if I remember rightly, it can just aggregate it further but I’m not experienced in getting rid of injuries really. Are you due your longest run this weekend? and what are your longest runs so far in this plan? I would say the bulk of the work is done and I’d be tempted to let it heal as much as it needs even if that takes you into taper weeks. Youre better off going into it very slightly less fit and pain free than it being game over after one mile with your calf pulling. Sorry i can’t be more help but every case is different so I’d just play it by ear and do what you can when you can.
@StevoRuns3 ай бұрын
Sorry me again, maybe if it’s still painful after the weekend, you could do some other cardio like cycling to keep your fitness up towards the race, that would give it time to heal fully and keep you sharp. I’m sure you will suss it out!
@nandapartners3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much Stevo for replying. I am a solo runner, so its nice to talk to someone. So this is roughly my mileage for the last 4 weeks Week 4 - 90km (Long run 34km) Week 5 - 87km (Long run 30km) Week 6 - 81km (Long run 34 km) Week 7 - 60km (Long run 22km) Week 8 - 59km (injured on Thursday) Week 9 - this week Week 10 - next week Week 11 - taper week Week 12 - race week on sunday So I got injured in my week 8 where I just finished a down week, but I got carried away trying to do 12-15k a day from 10-12k a day. seems the overtraining got me. This week was supposed to be my biggest week to hit 34-36k but certainly wont be able to do that i think. I went to my physio who cleared me to run 5k on a Friday and if ifs good to run 10k on Sunday (Saturday rest). Today which is Wednesday, I can already do 3 set of 20 single leg calf raise and 3 set of 10 single leg hop lunges. It seems that I can run, but again don't know if Friday is too soon or too late, and dont know how should i plan my remaining weeks. Also, I don't have a coach either, I was mainly trying to run everyday (easy slow run) with long run on Sunday. Thanks again Stevo! for the response I cant imagine I got a response 😊. Appreciate it 🙏
@StevoRuns3 ай бұрын
Hey anytime buddy I love talking running! It sounds like you’ve got some really good running weeks in before your calf strain so I wouldn’t panic. What the physio said sounds like good news to me and I’d feel encouraged that I’d be fine for the marathon. I would do as they said with the 5k and 10k but if you’re worried about it flaring up then you could start next week with what you was due to do this week. Just keep in mind how you hurt it in the first place, it’s so easy to get carried away, I’ve been there too many times and am dealing with my worst injury to date from ultra training! All the best to you and please let me know how it’s going or how the marathon went! Cheers
