Olson over tones are striking, Olson is the premier builders today. I would be pleased to own an Olson.

Nice instrument, reminds me a little bit my irish Bouzouki

Bouzoukis and Octave Mandolin are very similar. Really a matter of the stringing and scale length. Generally Bouzouki ( this is confusing ) have some of the string pairs an Octave apart, like a 12 sting guitar. The Mandolin Family outside the mandolin itself is a bit unruly. There are different names for the same instrument in different traditions or nations. The Bouzouki came from Greece, but was widely adopted by the Irish in the 60s. i don’t know the history of the Octave Mandolin.

@@DavidAndersen-tf8nn thank you, David ! I have 2 irish Bouzoukis, one acoustic Hora brand ( made in Romania) which i have added a Tap pick up ( Tap is the model , not a faucet 😃) ,to blend the sound with the Fishman built in piezo with 3 band equalizer, paid 265 euros in 2013 , sounds great ,believe me . Hora makes very good instruments for a reasonable price. The other one instead, is hand made ,semi hollow body with 2 GFS humbuckers. You can see it on my channel if you search for " Byrd song treble booster " , english language. Both instruments have a scale lenght of 66,2 centimeters and are tuned ( from thin to thick strings) A D G C . Recently the brand Eastwood has put in the market the OM 150 , 8 strings ,is sold as " octave mandola " ,archtop style , beautiful.if they will make the left handed version, i will think about it .Have a good time, greetings from Italy, Patrick

After hanging up my bass for almost 15 years I am in the market for a new instrument to start working again. This little clip of Vic could not have come at a more fortuitous time for me. What a great bit of wisdom and I will be sure to keep this in mind.

I've got one of those and though Chinese instruments in general sound thin and at worst tinny the Eastman octave has a nice tone for the money AND I find it much preferable to the guitar body type octave mandolins. The latter might have more depth of tone but there's so much midrange that you might as well play a guitar. The A body octave like this has more gutsiness. Oh, and before you run out and buy Northfield's set of octave strings find out from Eastman what string gauges they use and recommend. Northfield's and others are using a lighter gauge which thins out the sound of this Eastman. EG - .014 for the E strings adds depth to the treble that Northfield's .012 lacks. I wish someone made a mandolin that had the body of a mandola but was tuned to a mandolin instead of the mandola - the former is a key of "A" instrument whereas the latter is a key of "C" instrument. I find the key of "C" to be bland and boring - and quite limited when it comes to bluegrass or jazz or Celtic which prefer keys of A / G / D / B ~ Bb

Hi, Yasam 498, i have 2 bouzouki irish style, they have a longer scale lenght than Octave Mandolin , normally the bouzouki is 66,2 centimeters, instead the O.M. should be ( more or less , i'm not 100% sure) 58,4 centimeters. If you go on my channel, search for the video " Byrd song treble booster " english language, and you will have the chance to see the electric one that i own . All the best to you, Patrick from Italy

I am absolutely amazed at how truly and consistently out of tune both guitars are. When you think about it, if you are that good a player and you are playing on two of the better high-end guitars made, there is only one explanation. They were pushed out of tune on purpose. I'm thinking it was done because one of the guitars sounds so much better than the other and throwing them out of tune makes it harder to choose a favorite. Almost as if the goal was to convince listeners that the less expensive guitar is just as good as the more expensive one. Nothing like a good old fashioned conspiracy theory...

When he said octave mandolin I thought it was going to be each course of strings would be tuned in an octave like on a 12 string guitar. That would be cool.
