That was a really cool stream. I’ve done some win32 programming ages ago when I was just starting off and haven’t touched any Windows programming since. I’ve written the code along with you on Windows XP and it was really fun coming back to that.

Perfect timing finding this. I’ve been going back to learn about developing for Windows operating systems from 1995-2000. I actually started my programming journey in earnest on Linux in the mid-2000s, and then later Mac OS X. So I missed out on a lot of this fun even though I was probably old enough. Sad, because I had the hardware and used Windows regularly! I agree a lot with what you said about how simple things were then and I am also unsure about some of the things we got in return from the tower of abstractions. I end up having to wade through terminology, idiosyncrasies, and other things hitched to frameworks and languages. And don’t even get me started on the Web. Windows programming back then… it was fine, actually. And the performance! Nothing has really changed fundamentally from the user’s POV except that things are slower and you have to pay monthly for software. It’s still event handling, resources, drawing boxes, etc. Everything is so heavy now. And buckle up everybody, forget your quad core multi-GHz machine; you’re going to need a whole data center of GPUs to run LLMs that generate approximate crap. I feel like I’m in the bad timeline. Thanks a lot for posting this and keeping it up! Hope to see another one someday. 🥤

VC 6 is still my favorite today, and I still use it (with VisualAssist) if I don't need to build a 64 bit executable. It has that well thought out look and feel, and it feels... I guess the word is "robust".
@chrisalexthomas10 ай бұрын
The "visual" in the "visual studio" line of products, was because they allowed you to build applications using drag and drop and a graphical user interface. Something that delphi, visual basic, etc made a lot of use of and it was super trendy back in the 90's
@rogerclarkonline10 ай бұрын
This is true. The dialog resource editor is certainly visual, but it isn't a huge part of building real-world applications on Windows, and it also isn't a very good experience in any version of VC. Most of the time, you're just looking at code like any other editor.
@chrisalexthomas10 ай бұрын
@@rogerclarkonline for sure, but back in the 90's, visually dragging and dropping your gui elements around and entering values into dialogs was all the rage, all the cool kids were doing it then reality came a'knocking, and everybody had their pants pulled down about it and it was all exposed as a useless marketing gimmick nobody gave two shits about. But managers loved it :D

Windows NT has a meaning, "N"ew "T"echnology, kids today... :)
@rogerclarkonline10 ай бұрын
That's apocryphal. There's no consensus on the origin of the name.
@chrisalexthomas10 ай бұрын
@@rogerclarkonline it's not though, an explanation about why it stands for "New Technology" is an association found in the windows source code that was leaked all those years ago.
@chrisalexthomas10 ай бұрын
For those who are unaware, Windows NT originally was OS/2 NT in collaboration with IBM. But they split and went their own way. OS/2 NT stands for New Technology. That's why it's clear Windows NT has the same meaning. I guess you can say it's all a big coincidence. I guess similar to why some fathers called Scott name their son Scott Junior
@rogerclarkonline10 ай бұрын
My point is that there is no official definition for NT that has been outwardly expressed by the company. There are many possible explanations, including yours, and including the VMS -> WNT explanation.
@chrisalexthomas10 ай бұрын
@@rogerclarkonline I think the VMS->WNT explanation is ridiculous as saying pick a number less than 5 and being surprised we picked the same number, or like saying you survived a car crash because you picked up a bible in a hotel room this morning. It's completely random and makes no sense at all.

I don't think the song was "ahead of its time", but instead, perfectly _on time_ . I mean, there was a lot of experimental stuff like that in the early 00s, when these machines (and songs) were new. Of course, the song also has _lasting appeal_ , because these are still real bangers. But being "ahead of its time" would mean that more stuff like this came after, and THAT just didn't happen.

The more confusing question for me was: Abort, Retry, Fail? In DOS. Some programs of that era could even ask Abort, Retry, Fail, Ignore? And then you try to guess the difference between all these unclear choices.

Man, DDR needs a resurgence. My introduction to it was my friend Cherie introducing me to the (at the time) UK #2 when we went skiing in Milton Keynes (it was a _weird_ week) xD We spent more time playing DDR in the arcade than we did on the slope, and I honestly miss this game. I do own one metal T-series pad, but they don't make them any more, so I kinda wanna get a pair that can be bonded so my friends and I can play the twin-pad songs at parties and things. There are so many amazing songs in this game (Tsugaru, Waka Laka, Butterfly, A Geisha's Dream, not to mention all the user-created games). I wonder if DDR could be mashed up with Beat Sabre? Would need to be an AR game, so stuff overlaid on the cameras, but I'm pretty sure it could be really successful.

Tsugaru is one of the few songs fixed in newer DDR games starting with DDR X (currently as of September 2022 the latest game is DDR A3), here are some differences for those that don't know: 4:00: The 16th gallops here are now 12th note gallops to make more sense with the swing beat. Although the gallops at 4:38 are still 16ths since it's not on a swing beat. 4:20: This section got it's timing fixed in DDR X - present to properly quantize the notes to actual 12th notes, making Tsugaru much easier to PFC.

The difference in load time is obviously also because of way less features in VC6, but it gets even worse when you open a real project. And it gets worse every VS iteration.

Windows NT 4 was the pinnacle of Windows UI design. Everything has been downhill since then, either by introducing new, bad UI design (like the ribbon) or by importing bad UI design imported from other platforms (web, mobile).

7:00 Difference between immersive and simplified is the difference between the UX of Dead Space/Persona5 and a game for toddlers. With the former, there's a respect for the kinds of options presented to the player and you can just change what's relevant to the context at that time while the latter doesn't give you really any choice but to do what it tells you to much like a central authority in any society run by a corpo/govt co-op.
