I remember this as a child, when I had to be down there with my dad sometimes at the "workshop"/storage area (now Porthminster Cafe). I think they used to store the beach huts (which lined the entire path/road below the putting green during summer) and beach tents in there over winter, and I seem to remember a stack of spare deck chairs too. He had a portable Calor Gas heater in there and it was still FREEZING! It smelled kind of musty and I was always a bit scared of the staircase which went down to the "tea house" because it was dark, and I seem to have a memory of what looked to me like a very old style light switch, so I thought there might be ghosts hiding down those stairs - LOL! I vividly remember how big the drop was in the sand, especially to me as a child, and being told to keep well away from it (not that I needed telling, mind you!). I remember regular dog walkers sometimes coming in for a cup of tea with dad in the "workshop". Funny how things can spark certain memories - thank you for sharing this!

St Ives Times & Echo 29 November 2024 : Dame Barbara Hepworth’s cast bronze sculpture Dual Form has been temporally relocated to Kresen Kernow in Redruth. Carefully moved on Monday 25 November to ensure its sculpture’s protection during the Guildhall Renewal Project, while keeping it on public display for the community and visitors to enjoy. Dual Form will return to its position outside St Ives Guildhall once the forecourt works are complete, as part of the Guildhall Renewal Works. The Guildhall Renewal Project is one of 9 St Ives Town Deal funded projects. These enhancements will include a level access entrance and a redesigned portico to create a more accessible and attractive space. kresen Kernow, Cornwall’s state-of-the-art archive and records centre, now temporarily hosts Dual Form. Housed in the former Redruth Brewery, this facility opened in 2019 and offers research areas, exhibition spaces, and an accessible environment. It preserves over 1.5 million records spanning 850 years, celebrating Cornwall’s rich history. The Town Council extends its gratitude to Kresen Kernow for facilitating this relocation. “We are thrilled to be able to provide a temporary home for Dual Form, which has been made possible as a result of the Government Indemnity Scheme. We would like to thank HM Government and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Arts Council England for arranging the indemnity. This ensures the public can continue to enjoy it while the much-needed work is completed at the Guildhall,’’ said Deborah Tritton, Service Manager at Kresen Kernow. Dame Barbara, one of the 20th century’s most influential sculptors, gifted Dual Form to St Ives in 1968 when she was granted the Freedom of the Borough, an honour she shared with fellow artist Bernard Leach. She personally selected her sculpture’s position outside the Guildhall and its exact placement will be maintained when it returns. Dual Form is one of seven casts, with others displayed as far afield as Washington and the Netherlands. Dame Barbara herself believed that its placement in St Ives was the most striking, a sentiment expressed in her letters. Cast at the renowned Morris Singer Foundry in London, Dual Form bears the foundry’s mark on its base. The Town Council enlisted specialist sculpture-moving team Sculpture Transport UK, with extensive experience in handling significant artworks to safely transport Dual Form. This complex process included templating the sculpture’s base to ensure its future plinth matches precisely. “There has been a lot to consider in moving Dual Form. With such an important and large sculpture, we’ve worked carefully to account for every detail, including commissioning an experienced team and making sure its plinth will be a perfect fit. said Charlotte Tomlinson, Project Manager for the Guildhall Renewal Project. “We’re thrilled to share Dual Form with Kresen Kernow for a short time and look forward to its return to the Guildhall next year, where it will continue to inspire for decades to come.” The Mayor of St Ives, Cllr Johnnie Wells, added: “With so much hard work going on with the Guildhall Renewal Project, behind the scenes, over the past couple of years it feels really good to actually see some of it starting to play out. Well done to all the team getting this far. I would like to encourage everyone to go to Kresen Kernow to see Dual Form there, it’s a great building and well worth a visit.”

The removal unearthed 2 coins from the reign of George VI - a 1941 ha'penny and 1943 threepenny bit, mixed into the concrete plinth. Burying coins was a superstition intended to bring good luck to a building or structure. As it has worked for so long, these coins will be placed in the new plinth when the sculpture is brought home in early 2026.

When we express our thanks and admiration to ‘everyone involved’ with the harbour lights we really mean just STUART and DAN NOALL. These take about 5 mornings/30 hours to set up and there is also occasional maintenance during the 8 weeks they are on - Stuart and Dan come over from Hayle to troubleshoot or when something goes out. And of course there's the taking down and storing for next time. The St Ives Fisherman's Christmas Lights began 21 years ago when harbourmaster Stephen Basset said Stuart could put a length of ropelight on Smeaton's Pier, and gradually grown to what we have now. Almost solely funded by individual donations, a couple of the major lights were also given, such as the candles on West Pier, and this year the 'Silent Night' panel on Smeaton's. St Ives Town Council makes a small annual grant to the cause but donations are always welcome, hence the fundraising page. While not big in world harbour terms, it is still a considerable undertaking to decorate a run of about 800 yards in this way, which makes our harbour so much more attractive. Again, well done and thank you to Stuart and Dan.
Beautiful..Can’t wait we will be down again for New Year .

St Ives Times and Echo 8 November 2024 : The deck and temporary staircases for Network Rail’s new accessible footbridge at St Erth have been successfully installed. The previous listed footbridge was dismantled over the last weekend of October. a. The project is part of the Department of Transport’s Access for All scheme and continues Network Rail’s investment on the St Ives branch line, which carries around a million passengers a year. Weighing 50 tonnes, the new footbridge deck was lifted into place by a 1,000-tonne crane last month. The temporary staircases were installed soon afterwards and on the night of Saturday 26 October the listed footbridge was lifted out for transportation to East Somerset heritage railway. The work by Network Rail’s contractor BAM Nuttall took place over several weekends after trains had stopped running with no disruption for passengers. It is the second major phase of the project after 2 lift shafts and steel to support the deck and staircases were installed in July. Work continues to complete the lifts at the 1852 Grade II listed station.. Alina Wolfe Murray, senior sponsor at Network Rail, said: “This is another key milestone successfully reached and passengers can now use their new footbridge with the installation of these temporary staircases. By next summer St Erth will be a much easier station to use." St Erth is home to Cornwall’s first multi-modal hub, a project led by Cornwall Council with support from the European Regional Development Fund aimed at improving links between the station, the A30 and bus services. BAM Nuttall senior project manager Yan Sayles said: “The people of Cornwall expect a rail service which is accessible for everyone, and we’re delighted to play our part in delivering these improvements, helping to keep communities connected across the South West. We’re looking forward to seeing the new bridge put to good use and in the meantime our team will work hard to complete the project with minimal impact on the travelling public.” Richard Pears, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for transport, said: “The new footbridge will be a great addition to the station, ensuring access for all. The multi-modal hub has increased the numbers making rail journeys to and from the station, reflecting our wider ambitions for public transport in Cornwall - improving transport infrastructure so that residents and visitors have options for cutting down on the number of car journeys and travelling more sustainably.” Gary Amos, volunteer project manager at East Somerset Railway, said: “We are delighted that the old bridge has been successfully dismantled and look forward to giving this iconic structure its new lease of life at the East Somerset Railway. Work is already underway to establish new foundations for the bridge at Cranmore and we hope to complete refurbishing the structure and re-erect the bridge by the end of 2025. This will make a significant improvement to our visitor experience at Cranmore Station by giving access to our recently completed second platform.”

Very good. The new bridge is not just accessible, it is high enough for overhead electrification. And that means that pollution-free trains can be brought to the area. This is what should have been done at Pilning, when the electrification was done there.

@@barleyarrish I can understand St Erth residents and Cornwall Council wishing for it to remain, but with a new structure essential for several reasons, primarily safe, easy accessibility for the mobility challenged, the old one no longer has a purpose. It would soon deteriorate and ultimately become unsafe so it’s better by far that it’s removed, restored and preserved for future generations at a heritage railway site.

@@Cornishpastyman why on Erth would a Disabled Man or Woman choose to cross the tracks? Up to now the Bridge has not proved unsafe in it's long history. There are innumerable stations in this Country that are unsuitable for use by the disabled, so unsurprisingly other options are available for the less able traveller, which to be practicle are far more user friendly in all respects than a train. And in times when our economy is going from bad to worse, how money is spent is very relevent to our needs. Heretage and Natural Beauty are what drives what is left of our Cornish Economy, it is important not to compromise this with no really pressing need. I'm sure Michael Flanders if he were alive would agree.

@@barleyarrish London to St Ives by train includes a change at St Erth. In my wheelchair it is nearly half a mile around the outside of the station to cross platforms. A bridge with lifts makes this so much easier. Not just easier for wheelchairs but also for anyone with a pushchair or a heavy suitcase for example. I am unaware of a better option than the train.

St Ives Times & Echo 9 August 2024 : It has been a long 5 years since the harbour has seen a raft race, but was it worth the wait? A resounding ‘yes' said St Ives Pilot Gig Club who resurrected the event and organised a great evening of fun and frolics. Even the weather played its part ensuring a flat sea and very little wind. Through social media and poster advertising asking for potential rafters it soon became apparent that clubs, businesses and individuals were keen to put their nautical skills and ideas into building some interesting rafts out of such things as wheelie bins, barrels and pieces of wood. Would they make it around the course? Yes, they all made it, perhaps not in the same state as when they started, but all finished. Fred Flintstone made an appearance alongside his mate Barney Rubble, perhaps not used to racing in prehistoric times but still completed the course in good time. A little bit of rivalry was seen on the water between the Hakes WAGs (wives and girlfriends) of St Ives Rugby club and their male counterparts - boasting rights went to the ladies, winning by a considerable margin. Running alongside the race was the best Mermaid competition, the best male mermaid was judged to be on the Hakes WAGs’ raft and the best female was awarded to the mermaid on the Lidl raft. To be environmentally aware, it had been decided not to use flour bombs this year, but after some research into what may be used, seaweed jelly bombs were made available for the watching crowd to throw and make things a little more interesting for the raft crews, a delicacy for the fish apparently. As 6 o’clock approached the atmosphere amongst the crowd, now numbering in the thousands, became electric with excitement and anticipation all waiting to cheer on their favourite raft (who needs the Olympics). By now the 12 rafts were lining up on the start line waiting for the town’s Deputy Mayor Kenny Messenger to start the race. On his command they were off, the first point after the start was the lifeboat slipway where the mermaids were waiting to join their crews. It wasn’t long before two rafts tipped their crews into the water but with true diligence the competitors managed to climb back on board and finish the race. By this time the lead rafts, headed by the WAGs, were making their way across the harbour mouth to pick up a little spade from Smeaton’s Pier before heading back to the slipway to land their mermaid who would then present the spade to the race control point to verify their finish position. Early finishers had great delight in ensuring that as each crew approached the finish line they were thoroughly bombed with the jelly and had a good soaking. With the Hakes WAGs coming home in a convincing win there was a close finish between Post-Beam (past winner) and AV adventure, eventually AV just pipping Post-Beam by the shortest of distances. The Deputy Mayor was asked to present the specially made prizes to 1st Hakes WAGs, 2nd AV Adventure, 3rd Post-Beam with Lidl taking the wooden spoon. St Ives Pilot Gig Club are extremely grateful to all those businesses, companies, clubs and individuals who helped to make this event such a success, without them it may not have happened. A St Ives Gig Club spokesperson said that the evening exceeded all expectations with probably a record crowd, some really healthy competition on the water and generally an all-round fun evening. He encourages everyone to start planning and building their rafts for next year, date to be confirmed.

I hate google for constantly saying it was Carl Benz, this man did it over 80 years before he did, maybe google just can’t handle the amount of science that came out of Great Britain, seems to be a common thing everything I search up British inventions or discoveries practically nothing, search up German and lot comes up, the worst thing is many of those results are actually British creations or discoveries. But ignoring patriotism this man deserves more credit, rarely hear about him.
