The Newfoundland dogs are the perfect dogs. They are smart sweet kind and are naturally very gentle around children. They are truly gentle giants and the very best swimming companions I've ever had.

Our family bred show dogs for many years and one day my brother and I made thick beards with some glue and fur we had laying around. The doorbell rang after only a minute of admiring our beards in the mirror. We answered the door and found that some potential buyers had come by unexpectedly and with our parents gone at the time, we stepped outside to answer their questions as best we could. No one mentioned our beards while fluffs of dog hair floated off occasionally in the breeze, and I don't know if they ever came back.

If you like a clean house maybe choose another breed, I wash my floors, walls and occasionally ceiling constantly! They drool and shake their head and it fly's everywhere, they pick up all sorts of dirt and drag it into the house and make a good mess when they drink. IT IS WORTH IT THOUGH! My boy is 10 and the nature of these dogs is amazing, he is the sweetest dog I have ever had. To be honest I would say he is the sweetest rug I have ever had. Pick up the lead and he will look at you like, well you enjoy your walk but open up the car door and he is out the door like a rocket, always ready for swimming or being social. If you are not a very social person they are not great for you to take out, when we do go out we get stopped by every second person asking to pat or just curious about what he is. This breeds personality is just like a giant cuddle bug with a goofy outlook on life.

Oh there are plenty of DO NOT BUY : 1 The drool- they do often and plenty plus the drool is an adhesive. If they shake thier head droll plus hair can be found up to 2Meter on the wall. 2 Problems with ears - parasites love these ears and produce earwax so the Neufi shake the head to get rid of it and droll is on the wall. 3- eyes they use to have Cherry eyes that likes to produce pus - you need a doctor 4 eyes - in the morning you need to remove kind of bogger from his eyes- a good adhesive to 5 - bones- after 4,5 years athrosis is possible with massive inflammation 6- bones - with every year the joints get worst 7 Dirt - every dirt from outside will get inside - the fur graps as much dirt as possible 8 fur- you will find it everywhere in the house- and you need a very strong vaccumcleaner 9 Vacation- nearly impossible to go to the south at high temps 10 high Temperature- each time you feel the Neufi will die this time 10 strict regiment- Neufis got a strict timetable - for food/ sleeping etc and they will remind you

Did I hear you mention in passing that a Newfie that's been neutered/spayed sheds constantly? Does that mean that an intact Newfie will shed mostly during shoulder seasons (spring/fall)?

I do disagree with one small point you made. On grooming you said an option was trimming. But with double coat breeds you can permanently damage their coat. You should never trim double coat dog breed.

I don't have a new-FOUND-land. I have a newfn'-LAND. My Landseer Newf is 18 months old. Ichinojo has always had a kind disposition and he's been easy to train, but he's a humper and it's been hard work training him not to mount other dogs or people he meets for the first time. You're right about Newfs' water instincts - whenever I take Ichinojo to the beach or to one of the lochs he bolts straight for the water and doesn't come out until he's tired.

Very, very large puppies "100lbs"with very, very sharp teeth. "May not be a good fit with small children. Otherwise, our Nufie was an experience of a lifetime. King Neptune was a 10 inches taller than standard dog of 220lbs. An incredible gentle giant, lifeguard and nursemad.

Keep the videos and information coming please. His vet says he is in perfect help. I’m seventy years old with grandkids and several great grandkids who live on the property. Ben is well loved

We have had three Newies, we are now on our fourth and have been for about 3 years. We live between Lake Macquarie and Catherine Hill Beach, so he gets plenty of water in which to play. The problem though is other people (Not many) and their dogs also play at the beach. So Koda all 75 kilos of him (As in Kodiac bear) loves to run up to those people and or their dogs, obviously they (the dogs or the people) become intimidated, scared and as a consequence I get abused or the other dogs become aggressive (of course Koda backs off) So I have to keep him on a five metre lead, first to let him run and second to keep him away from other people and dogs until, they come to accept him, then its PLAY TIME.

I have an 18 month old Landseer Newfie. When I brought Ichinojo home my first task was to acclimate him to my house and show him which areas were his. Then I got to work on bonding. Then after he accepted me as his master and realised I loved him and would always take care of him we got to work on boundary and obedience training. Potty training was a breeze. Whenever he pooped I'd scoop it up and put it in a corner of the yard, and after a day or two he figured out that was the spot he should pee and poop in.
