So, you want to know how a fiberglass mold is built? Well good, because I am going to show you how to get from an idea to a custom molded fiberglass part. Once you understand the basics, the sky is the limit for what you can build! We are building a Key West style Hardtop for our custom built 29 ft hybrid bay charter boat, and you are invited to our family's boat shop for a step-by-step tutorial on how mold building is done. This video is for the DIYers out there that want to build their own custom molded parts, from hard tops and consoles, all the way up to boat hulls!

One thing you could do a video on is all the various sanding discs there are out there and the type of pads that go with which ones, the types of adapters to use with the electric grinder. This was much more of an aggravation to me than I ever imagined when I started and I purchased a lot of things that just didn't work very well. The 36 grit small disc on the electric grinder are my workhorse now when I have a lot of material to cut.
@FishBumpTV

Hey, just found your channel and like it. Like the scotch brite and acetone trick. As an amatuer hobbyist i (just always ragged with acetone). Also dont have a big compressor either. Wan to tell you about a tool option i found to be perfect for this type of work. The 7 inch polisher/sander from harbor freight called warrior. 650 to 3500 rpm pressure sensitive variable rpm non orbiting with 7 inch foam stick it velcro pad (also use the 5 inch too) Fiberglass dust burned out my 12 thousand rpm grinder one day and grabbed the warrior as the last act of desperation. I'll never buy or use a 4 inch angle grinder ever. The warrior sands great and is very forgiving. with a wool pad if buffs awesome, with a cut off wheel it slices thru fiberglass, wood, steel, aluminum like butter and doesnt grab yank twist and explode cut off wheels like the 12000 rpm 4 inch does. The pressure sensitive feature lets you get surgical, get inthere and lean on it and the motor torques like hell to the rpm you set it for. Inexpensive and worth a try, bet you like it. Great how to make mold series, thanks ! Oh yeah the love bugs only come out when spraying coatings paint and especially gel coat
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 11 күн бұрын
Welcome to the channel! Thanks for the suggestion on the variable speed grinder/ buffer, I will have to check that one out. I have a Bosch grinder that sounds very simular to what you are describing, but always looking for good options! The high speed grinders can take some getting used to for sure, and may not be the best tool for everyone. Haha, yep! The dreaded love bug!! They have messed up many a gelcoat job. Thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!

@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 11 күн бұрын
Thank you very much! The working time is alot like gelcoat. I try to have it out of the paint gun in 10 minutes or so. Clean the equipment, and load the next batch. Of course it can vary based on catalyst ratios and air Temps. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!

Another very nicely done and informative video. Thank you. Question: Is there a particular reason you chose not to add reinforcing ridges to your plug? Obviously more work, but could add some lengthwise stiffness to the final top. BTW, I am completely astounded at how clean you keep your clothing!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 11 күн бұрын
Thank you very much! That's a good question. This design is surprisingly rigid as it is. I have built other plugs and patterns like this in the past and knew it would work just fine for this application. I try to show what works for me, but always encourage you all to add or improve where you have a thought or idea to make something your own. Haha, I get the clean clothes thing a lot! I guess the more you do it, the easier it gets to keep clean!I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching and commenting!

Some glazing putties are better than others. Many people think of the one part putty, that comes in a squeeze tube. I don't personally use that on anything in our shop. The evercoat 2 part putty on the other hand is a good material. And remember that the part we are building is just the pattern for the mold, and will be a one time use, and will never be exposed to the elements. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

I have a question off topic of this video just going to leave it here as I would assume you check the newest videos for questions. I have a houseboat and when I tore out the inside walls of the cabin(not hull walls ) I found some old screw holes have been leaking inside the wall and rotted some of the outside walls wood backing. I'm going to cut out rot in wood and replace with fiberglass patch. What would you use on the backside of the exsisting fiberglass that is polyurethane? Some have told me to use epoxy for better adhesion but it seems to me if it was polyurethane initially why not use the same material?

What's the rationale for making a mold. Is it to make the final product lighter or so more so you can reproduce the process for multiples of the ssme plug? Love the content btw!

Generally a molded part is a higher quality part. And yes, it also makes building more pieces of the same part much easier and faster. Thanks for watching and commenting!

if i add wax to a laminating resin that stays tacky, can i sand it? or will it still gum the sanding paper?

I am not sure if that will work or not. I do know that the orca primers that we used in the video are designed specifically for building molds. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Curious, would you say you use the "tackier/gummy" resin on stuff that will be getting another coat or a final fiber-glassing over it or why would you use that? Sandpaper is not cheap but I'm asking b/c I just came upon 4 tubes like are used for flotation on a houseboat. Since I'm on a large lake(7th largest manmade lake) your show came into my feed at the right time. I might find myself building a houseboat. Nothing fabulous but livable, perhaps? Anyhoo, This is my "fiberglass" school , ty Teacher

Yes, we always use laminating resin, which stays tacky if we are going to be adding more layers. If we wanted to sand or finish a area we would add some wax additive to the last coat of just plain resin or gelcoat to help it cure tack free. I hope this helps, and best of luck with your houseboat project!

Joe, you used both the tooling and laminating resin. If I understand correctly both are laminating, i.e. don’t fully cure when exposed to air, so what is the difference and where would you one over the other. Thank you for your channel.

ISO resin is stronger. But many times, ortho resin is strong enough. Ortho resins do shrink, whereas ISO resin doesn't. That is the main reason to use ISO.

I have a question getting ready to do some gel coating in about a month with wax will it hurt to add extra wax additive to it
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 9 күн бұрын
You can add more wax, but I would recommend not adding more than 1 to 2 percent to gelcoat that already has wax added. That would be 10 to 20 CCs per quart. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
