Another comment from information I gathered somewhere else, women should refrain from getting a full pedicure before or during the Camino. Removing calluses will make the skin weak and prone to get blisters. In fact, I heard an interview with a foot doctor who recommends that long-distance hikers and runners apply lemon/lime on their soles to effectively tan the feet like leather to make the skin thicker and more resilient. Applying Leuko or surgical paper tape when you get a hot spot on your foot to prevent getting a blister or to protect the area after you burst a blister are also good advice if you have not been able to prevent them.
@NickLivingLife21 күн бұрын
My feet are generally pretty tough before I go and there are no pedicures in my diary. It’s important that nails are not long enough that they can cause harm. I usually have some Leuko or KT tape with me although last time I mainly used it to try to hold my shoes together 😂. If the pack is light, the shoes fit well and the socks allow feet to remain cool and dry, and the wearer stops the very second they suspect something is rubbing to check it out then blisters should be unlikely.

Looks like Lanacane anti-chaffing gel is being discontinued in North America because Benzocaine is now being restricted. Some of it is imported from Europe and made available at inflated prices.
@NickLivingLife21 күн бұрын
The body glide that is available in the USA is almost as good but I find I need to reapply it halfway through the day during a coffee/ lunch stop. I’d better stock up on Lanacane then in case they do the same in UK. Thanks for letting me know. 😊😊

I watched the excellent video but what is the answer? Should you skip Central Route?
@NickLivingLife21 күн бұрын
Overall I would say No, don’t skip it. There were some great bits in it but the first day from Porto wasn’t “competetive” with the rest. It’s worth it though to experience the rest 😊. Depends if you liked what you saw in the video. If you like it then don’t skip it 😊😊

@ I’m booked to start May 1st from Porto, I’m planning on taking the littoral route to Vila do Condo then switch to the Central route. I don’t like the first part on the Central route walking through the industrial and airport while the littoral appears to be much prettier and more relaxed.
@NickLivingLife21 күн бұрын
Sounds like a great plan. It can be a bit busier and others have told me there can be a bottleneck on the first night after Porto so might be worth booking ahead for that night just to be sure. Bom Caminho 😊😊

I'm planning to walk the Camino Portuguese next spring, this being my first, your video provides a good insight into the journey. Looking at your equipment, I noticed that you did not mention the video camera you are using on your pole to film your walk. The quality appears to be excellent and I was curious to see what you used.
@NickLivingLifeАй бұрын
Hi. Exciting times ahead for you and I’m glad my video is helpful. 😊 The camera on the pole in an insta 360 X3. There is a new and better X4 available now. It’s a camera you don’t point as it films everything and then you choose what you want it to show later on when you use the app that goes with it. It doesn’t have the same quality as normal cameras you aim, but the advantage is that sometimes the best view is somewhere we were not aiming at so it means never missing a shot. 😊

Hi Nick, what model of Atom Pack you use, thanks Fil
@NickLivingLife2 ай бұрын
Hey 👋. This one is a 50 litre custom Atom Plus. A 40ltr is still plenty for Camino and obviously even lighter but I wanted this one also for bigger expeditions where tents and more are needed. They know about me using it on my videos so you could ask for similar in the colours you prefer and they’d most likely know what I had exactly. I’m probably going to order an Atom (not plus) soon in something nearer a 30ltr for a Camino where I don’t take drones and tripods etc. Dexter who works there is also really knowledgeable about ultra light and had his own perspectives (he doesn’t use hip belts). Send them a mail with any questions you have, they are fab and really happy to help. Not sure you would get a discount by mentioning me as I haven’t arranged anything like that …..but you never know 😉 All the best Nick

@@NickLivingLife Hi Nick, Thank you for the prompt response. I've also done the Camino Santiago 3 times (English, Portuguese coast, Portuguese Central (spiritual route), the backpack I use is the RAB aeon 28L. I'm thinking of doing the TMB, so I wanted to know what model you are using , because I need something bigger (tent, sleeping bag, mattress, food system, etc. Thanks again for the information, Regards Phil
@NickLivingLifeАй бұрын
@luisfilipemenezes4129 That’s exciting Phil, yeah this pack would be awesome for that. With all the optional I have on it, it’s only about 100g heavier than a Rab Aeon 28. If you’re into the grams they offer lots of options to possibly even get it lighter than the Rab like replacing the job belt with a webbing strap etc but personally I’d rather save extra weight on the bag contents rather than the pack. Not sure when you are thinking of TMB but if you are going early and need ice axe, crampons etc I think they will also add axe loops for you. I’ve not done the coastal part of Portuguese Camino yet, I just stuck to Centeal all the way from Lisbon other than a few days before Porto where I went to the coast to avoid all the industrial parts. Hoprefully I’ll get to do coastal, litoral and spiritual this year 😊 All the best 😊

The best way is to get one of the apps like Buen Camino or Wise Pilgrim which will have LOTS of info. It starts in Oviedo which is a large city but best airports vary from flights in your country etc. I started after walking Camino Portuguese from Lisbon. It’s easy to get to Oviedo from Santiago or from Leon etc. Rome2Rio is also a great app for buses and trains but you need to put dates within 1 month of now or it looks like there are no buses and trains and they only put them up about a month in advance. 😊 I think from international I would maybe fly to Madrid, bus to Leon, have a few days looking around Leon then bus to Oviedo but there will be many other options which may suit you better. 😊

Hi Nick, thank you for the video. I am going to walk the Frances starting this September 11th and flying out on October 15th. My two biggest questions are should I take my sleeping bag and puffy jacket. I will have a liner and a hooded pullover made from Alpha Direct 90. I just don’t really understand how cold it will get during the time I am on the path. I will have a rain shell, a collared shirt, a sun shirt, and a merino t-shirt. Not worried about being warm while walking, as the sun-shirt/Alpha Hoodie/shell combo can keep me warm to about -2C. Would really like to save that weight, but I also don’t want to be cold when I am not moving. I understand everyone is different and the weather can vary, but in general, during the time period I am walking, would you recommend the sleeping bag and puffy, or do you think I can leave those items at home?
@NickLivingLife4 ай бұрын
Hi. As long as there is no freak weather coming in from Antarctica or something, you are all sorted for walking. The alpha direct is a big favourite of mine and with rain shell you are sorted for almost anything. It does get colder in October and also it’s colder and wetter anyway in Galicia for the last week or so. Personally I have never taken a sleeping bag and only ever had 2 nights out of about 600 or so on Caminos where I felt cold enough to put extra clothes on. I have used a puffy jacket a few times like the nights above when it was colder, and for eating outside or sitting outside with friends in the evenings (alpha works great when moving but not as good as a puffy when sitting for a few hours). Overall, if your puffy is super light (under 300g) I would take it, if the sun shirt has a collar then you could swap the other shirt for a really light synthetic running shirt and then just a sleeping bag liner. I use a silk one but anything is fine. 😊 Not long to wait now, you are going to love it. Buen Camino!! 😊😊😊
@hoffmandarren4 ай бұрын
@@NickLivingLife Thank you again! My puffy is under 300g and my sunshirt is an BD Alpenglow Pro Hoody. The shirt with the collar, I guess it is also a sunshirt, but one that looks nice and like a "normal" shirt. I will leave the sleeping bag and bringing the puffy. If I get too cold at night I can sleep in the puffy or the alpha d hoodie. My plan is to hike in the DB hoody and layer if cold, with shorts on. Then change to my light weight hiking pants and the collared shirt once I get to my accommodations and shower. I have the Sea to Summit Silk Blend Liner that does add a little warmth. I think I am just nervous in general about the trip and what it will be like. Thank you for the support and encouragement.
@NickLivingLife4 ай бұрын
@hoffmandarren You are very welcome. I can tell you know your stuff and have a lot of nice gear. Most of the time now I would start the day and walk in just shorts and a t shirt and I warm up within 10 minutes. I used to layer up and then stop to get undressed again almost straight away so I just walk now. It’s not normally any colder than 10C in the mornings and warms up fast (I don’t normally leave until 8-8:30 ish as I walk pretty fast between coffee shops 😂). Average temperature at night inside most of the albergues is about 20C with only a few very very basic ones lacking heating but a bunch of weary people all sleeping in the same room has a warming effect anyway. Without my KZbin camera gear, drone etc my entire backpack with 500ml of water is 3.4kg which shows you can get by on a LOT less than you originally think and if you desperately need something you didn’t take, there is a big town within a few days where you can buy it 😊. My main tip would be in the last week before you go, and you get the idea to add something into your pack “just in case” …..don’t do it 😊😊
