Same motor, almost same everything else for the diesel version- HOWEVER, IT IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE. Yes, it's a VW. Yes, the same pulleys and belts are used but diesel pistons ride above the deck and have very small tolerances. When you change your belt on a diesel version of this, be sure to rotate clockwise only and by hand only/ slowly. If it's stops or gets"tough" to rotate then STOP. It may be touching a valve which is fine but you will cause damage if you force it. Back it up counter clockwise and recheck your belt marks, it may have shifted. Cheers 🍻

The slag of the chain 25-35mm should be measured with the bike on the side stand only - it is written on the label on the swingarm near the axel nut. If the rear wheel is like in the film in the air, the chain will be pretty too tight. I've got the same bike - 2011 Versys 650. Apart this issue great video.

My honest opinion, I would not spend the money doing it unless if you already had to change the chains and a sprocket. It’s maybe 200rpm lower on the highway compared to before. @OlisGarage thanks Olis. I've noticed there is a linear Speedometer error which will likely be corrected by increasing the front sprocket by 1 tooth. But I've read in some Versys forums that it does not leave much clearance in that area and would be concerned if things got too tight there.

Love the video, as my CV has been giving me issues as well, I replaced both cv axle's (full arm replaced) I was worried they did not come with grease on the inside as there was a grease bag provided. I opened up the boot and there was grease inside already, But after seeing this video im wondering if the pregrease was enough. You placed a very generous amount. On top of this it seems that when Im turning LEFT ONLY (& only in motion) The transfercase area makes a single loud pop/clunk, It also happens when the steering wheel returns to center. Any ideas would be greatly appreciate it.

@@juulin2567 thank you! I always start with the easy stuff first. Check to make sure the bolts are right. Jack the car up on jack stands, start it, put it in gear, and now turn the steering wheel. Can you replicate it that way? Maybe something else is loose? How do you know where the pop is coming from? If you think it’s the axle, do you have the old one to put back on? When did the noise first start? Some thoughts and questions above that could help you narrow it down

Phew! That CV ball-bearing race was FUBAR! Folks - that is why it's important to check your CV boots periodically. When that boot is torn then foreign material contaminates the grease and your CV bearings unwittingly become a gravel crusher. Not good! Remember; preventative maintenance is cheaper than replacement maintenance! That said, I'd normally just order an entire new axle shaft. Typically VW has an extensive back catalog of mk1 Golf components, so they're inexpensive enough to offset the work and mess of rebuilding the CV axles. But, and I mean BUT, considering the terrible quality of aftermarket parts now (especially how the market has been flooded with cheap 'Chineseium' components), the idea of rebuilding them with quality name-brand subcomponents seems more appropriate now. It'll save you work time and money in the long run. Just don't wear your Sunday-Bests and wear gloves when doing them; LOL what a MESS! Thanks for the great video Oli, that'll definitely be booked marked for when I inevitably need to service my Mk1 Jetta's CV Axles. Cheers!

This grease will NOT come out of clothing or off your hands/face etc. And for those of you following along in your Bentley please note it is not correct in how to orient teh inner and outer CV parts. For mk2s, the axle bolts are 33 ft lbs and the axle nut is 195 ft lbs. The ball joint is the same 37 ft lbs. If you have vented rotors, my friend taught me a trick for loosening the axle when the car is already jacked up. Remove the wheel, then put a few of the lug bolts back in to the hub so they secure the rotor to the hub. Put a flathead screwdriver in one of the vented openings of the rotor. I'd also remove the rotor screws that hold the rotor to the hub so you make sure you don't break them. Then you can break the axle nut loose real easy with a breaker bar. I do the same for torquing my axle nut.

💯% on the retorquing the axle shaft bolts. I swapped out the clutch on my Mk1 Jetta last year, and torqued the axles bolts to factory specs. 4 of them loosened to the point of almost falling out only after a few hundred kilometres of weekend drives. RECHECK THE BOLTS, FOLKS! I took no further chances; pulled all of them and applied blue Locktite. I knew it would be a bear to loosen them in the future, but since this is a weekend car, I figured the clutch should last another 40 years no problem (bearing any unforeseen complications...which, sadly, is discussed below). BTW - speaking of axle shafts; my driver side axle flange seal has since started to leak. Sigh...now the fun starts. Ollie - have you ever replaced axle flange seals with the trans in the car? I am not looking forward to doing that. I built a puller/press tool as per VW forums, but the project still seems daunting. It's a slow leak...maybe I'll do it next year! 😆
