I didn’t do many individual musicians by name, like Kim Mitchel or Dom Troiano or Robbie Robertson or Joanie Mitchell or Lightfoot or the Tysons or Sarah Mc(can’t spell her name) and I’m sure many more-like Bobby Kertola and Bruce Coburn and Richard “King Biscuit Boy” Newell, to name a few (like kd Lang, Gino Vinnelli, Terry Jacks, Stompin’ Tom, or Buffy St Marie. This is about actual bands. I just know I’m gonna wake up tonight suddenly remembering some glaring omission. Then prob’ly won’t be able to get back to sleep. Oh well.

As a 70 year old Canadian that was a solid list though the commenters have provided a bunch of great alternatives. The Band 4/5ths Canadian (Not Levon Helm), Triumph & Mahogany Rush would seem the most obvious omissions. Domenic Troiano who appeared in the Guess Who video (also in the bands Mandala (Love Itis)/Bush & James Gang had a tremendous solo career, he is one of best rock/jazz fusion guitarists that we have produced. Had a fair hit in Canada with We all Need Love. Good Job

You want us to "straighten your asses out?" OK, here goes....... 1) If you're going to put up a banner referring to bands "you didn't know were Canadian," then it needs to be about lesser known bands that weren't as popular or mainstream, not 8 or 10 of the best known, best selling and most commonly recognized bands from Canada. It's understandable that people who may not be big music fans might not know the origin of these acts but if you guys are presenting yourselves as music experts, or even just music aficionados, and you don't know these acts are Canadian then one has to ask - "Where have your heads been stuck?!" 2) Joe Lynn Turner.... an American.... was NEVER a member of Bachman Turner Overdrive. The "Turner" in that name refers to Fred Turner, their bass player... and a Canadian!

Three Canadian bands that I love that almost no one mentions are Max Webster, Prism and Klaatu. Kim Mitchell is a Canuck treasure and had many excellent solo hits in the 1980s but he was the lead singer of Max Webster in the '70s. Their High Class In Borrowed Shoes album (1977) is a classic period. Klaatu's debut album 3:47 EST (1976) is one of my all-time favourites; it is eclectic with great melodies and some humour/cheekiness. If people know Prism it is usually through the kitschy radio hit Spaceship Superstar but for me it is their album Armageddon (1979), particularly the amazing Side 1 and the epic title track on Side 2 that make the LP a rock classic. The unfortunate death of charismatic lead singer Ron Tabak killed the band's career.
@shizuokaBLUES23 сағат бұрын
I went to that Armageddon tour in 1978 (or was it ‘79) and was my first concert at 10 years old. You’ll never guess which Canadian band opened for them-and who went on to much bigger fame and sales within a few years.

I've read through the comments/replies and appreciate the conversation you started here! So much great music from Canada. There's a clip from Rock History Canada where both Kim Mitchell (Max Webster) and Andy Curran (Coney Hatch, Envy of None {with Alex Lifeson}) say the most under recognized or underrated artist in Canada is Ian Thornley (Big Wreck, Thornley, Ian Fletcher Thornley). Andy goes so far as to say he's the most talented musician he's ever met and there's just something about him. While Big Wreck started in Boston with Ian the only Canadian, he's always been the principal songwriter and vocalist, and today's band is all Canadian. They are recognised by many as a 'musician's band'. A trivia note: if you look up 'That Song' (from 'in loving memory...' 1997 but released as a single in 1998) you'll find it it was the most played song on Canadian rock radio by a Canadian artist between 1995 and 2016. It's a song about hearing a song that takes you to a place, feeling, moment, memory. Nostalgic when it came out, more nostalgic now. And performed live at Suhr 2015 we get the better version where he practically screams at the top of his lungs. Coming out with Pages 2 EP this year, we hope!

Thank you very much for digging into this with us! This topic was one of the first ideas Larry and I came up with when we started to put the channel together early last year. We did not realize what impact this would have and MORE importantly we discovered how much we DID NOT know about Canadian music (outside the US mainstream). While the rock genre does not differ much from US music, it is a completely different set of players (which is awesome). Its like discovering new classic rock songs all over again! I have a few Max Webster LP's and I know they opened for Rush for the BIG shows (Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures). I added Max Webster to our list for the [much needed] follow-up video due out in the next few weeks. I have never heard of Big Wreck- maybe Larry has. When that Envy Of None album dropped I was excited to hear it. In all honesty, it wasn't what I expected - maybe I need to give it another try. I listened to 'That Song' at your recommendation and will provide my thoughts in the follow-up video. As you may have seen in the chat history, Lar and I will be picking out the bands we don't know (as americanos) and give them a listen and provide some thoughts and some factoids about the artists. You and everyone on this chat are the EXACT reasons that Larry and I created this channel. Learning from each other! Thanks again and hopefully we get this next video right 😉😆😁

From the perspective of a musician, I consider Rush one of the most naturally accomplished bands of all time. Yes, they did have some "lulls in the action", but they were never afraid to put themselves out there, experiment, take things to the next level. I believe that a musical chemistry between those three musicians (and friends) rarely ever comes along, and for as long as it lasted 😁😉

No offence but your knowledge of good Canadian bands is somewhat limited, you should be mentioning groups like 54-40, Triumph, Streetheart, The Headstones, Leonard Cohen, Great Big Sea, The Band combo with an American Levon Helm, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell among many others. Mentioning bands like LoverBoy and Nickelback and not some of the above doesn’t make a lot of sense. Also being Canadian and a gray beard I do appreciate your knowledge of music and wished you’d mentioned some of the above.
