Cornet has a much sweeter sound than a trumpet. A flugelhorn has a very dark sound. All are in the B Flat key but rumpets have different keys...not sure about the other 2.

Gordon is like the Courtois better than the Wicks. What I/D is the Courtois?
@GordonHudson

@@davidstorey2477 It's different, smaller throat, more old fashioned soundings. It's a bit like a Wick 3/3B but better balanced with the tighter throat and longer backbore. The original shank was very narrow. Even smaller than the old British fitting.

@@musicalcubes I never liked the response of the B cup wick mouthpieces. They have a U shaped cup but too sharp a transition into the throat. I found articulating more difficult on them, but lots of people do like them.

@GordonHudson I have quite a strong attack so the 4B tames that. I have the opportunity to try two cornets next week - a 927 Sovereign and a Xeno. Wonder which I will go for.

@@GordonHudson Was thinking the same... I think I'll like both but I've only ever played a round stamp Sovereign so want to give the Besson a fair try.
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 12 күн бұрын
The Courtois has greater clarity in the attack, but I did a spectrogram analysis of both and the Wick has more high frequency sound in it, even though it is a lot deeper. The Courtois is a lot easier to play on.

Back to full playing strength following a number of medical issues. It started with an infection in my cheek that that affected my facial nerves so I couldn't control the centre of my lip. This was followed by a Covid 19 infection that knocked me flat for two weeks and left me with a chest infection. Obviously this has upset my plans to record another big concerto, but I will get there eventually.

Indeed. I also felt more inconsistent on the 4B and had to work quite hard to get a sound I liked especially in hymns and slow melodies. It works out being more efficient overall to just play the 4.

Where can you get the Sheet Music?
@GordonHudson
@GordonHudson 6 ай бұрын
I just used the vocal score (for piano and voice) and transposed it as I was playing it. Thats why you see me shuffling the piano part around my music stand. I think I got it from Sheet Music Plus or one of the other online publishers. If you do that make sure you get it in a key that works on cornet. The first two notes on the version I played were a middle concert C (a D on the fourth line for Cornet) followed by a bottom concert C (bottom D on the cornet). That kept the number fo sharps down and made the top notes not too high.
