i am creating a language for my fantasy world, and it is pretty darn unique in some aspects, specifically the gender system, it uses gendered suffixes instead of gendered articles that languages like german would, and the language is preatty good and human-like so far just something i wanted to share, since i am working on conlangs (i am not a linguist and i am 15+ lol)
you shouldve started throwing the craziest dance moves 2:18

Hey I'm making a map and I've been following these principles. Do you have a discord for map nerds?

Quick question…Would there be any issue going from 3rd limited to sprinkling in a little omniscient commentary to add a bit of humor, then clearly go back to the actual story with 3rd Ltd? Don't want to confuse peeps…and by peeps I don't mean those marshmallow birds at Easter! Thanks for all you do for us!

I have a character in my book named Esther !! She's a being born from the stars, and fell to the earth to be with the one she loved. I chose the name because it literally means 'star', it is also thought to have derived from the Hebrew root s-t-r, meaning 'hide', as in, hiding her identity as an inhuman being from both her children (The main characters) and the rest of the world.
@Mel0.maniiacАй бұрын
Her children's names, Vivienne and Mori, are derived from the Latin words vivere and mori ! Meaning 'to live' and 'to die'. The best thing about this is that both the words are typically used in the same sentence. "Memento mori, memento vivere. " I feel like this cements the idea that, no matter how different they are, they are a pair of blood-related siblings. One cannot be without the other.

Thanks for this useful guide on how to make a conlang 😊😊
@KadukunahaluuАй бұрын
My conlang is literally just German with swapped letters; can you really call it a conlang? The letter switches have rules to them so it isn't just random letters being swapped. This language is for a thing I'm writing and it's supposed to resemble a mix of existing Germanic languages. *German lyrics from the mom's song from Frozen 2 translated to Vealdish:* Folgh ðen norþvind ðenn er brings ðigh tuv meer hen, vo en flut ensprings sleap maen lohvling egh bihn hihr ðer flut givs ansvors ðir and mir sine vater deap and klear openvarn ðir alles vat jesha deah henin ðogh nur en stuk sont sinks þu deap kejrs ni turuk sin lead berhs hohlighe magie and ene makd unendligh great bis þu jenaso stark vih sih vat er taeks lets ðigh ni mejr lus folgh ðem norþvind ðenn er brings ðigh tur muðer ðih sin lead nogh sings komm maen lohvling ghleave mir vat þu forlers komms ens tu ðir (The setting and song from the movie matches the vibe of my story, so that's why I translated it) It's a semi-minor part of the story so I didn't make a whole other language for it (I also don't know how to), so it's really just a "oh hey that looks/sounds like German/English/Icelandic/Norwegian, wow I'm so hard now".

i think the maltese falcon was all show and no tell....but yes, pretty much anything on tv or film that doesn't have a voiceover is all show and no tell...i see no purpose in writing a novel this way you may as well just write a screenplay

But readers will give a 1-star review to an author that writes Omni 3rd person limited. I stay in the POV for the scene, but will give Omni info to the readers. Everyone feels Romance needs to be in 3rd Person Limited also. So frustrated on this.

Lewis Carroll made up a language when writing alice in wonderland, Not to go in his story though. When he woke up with an idea for his story he found it a fuss to find a candle s to light the room . So he invented a way to write in the (near)dark . Its called nyctography . I could imagine dwarfs and underground creatures having a similar writing system

Another issue is that in the past, borders weren't always as strictly defined as they are today. During the Middle Ages, some borders would shift constantly, and in ancient times, they could be very vague. What matters is who controls which town or village, but some piece of swamp in the between two countries might not be so important. What ultimately matters is the resources you control.

G.R.R. Martin focuses on multiple stories at once without making it feel like its dragging along. Also, if dialogue is needed, making sure it reveals something about the characters, their dynamics, or the plot (and/or moves it forward) keeps the pace up.

First person point of view is probably the easiest point of view to use for writing, especially short stories. Even after forty years of writing I still haven't mastered it, though. I don't write in first person pov very much.
@MrRosebeing2 ай бұрын
"I learned from a KZbin channel how to write third person limited, but I already knew how to do it," he said. "Did you?", she said. "Yes," he said. They both sat in silence. Third person limited is the most riveting point of view. Personally I like omniscient, but then, I'm a stupid old codger.

Once upon a time he watched a KZbin video that told him nothing he didn't already know. Meanwhile, his neighbour next door watched a KZbin video on different kinds of snow. Perhaps one of them had a better time...he didn't know.
