I didn't see the whole game yet, I'll have to take a look at it. I'm wondering how much time Anish Giri had on his clock, because I saw ...Ng4 right away. Looking forward to watching the rest of the tournament. As always, I hope Fabi can take home the prize again.

I had to watch this one twice. The first time I was "Wait. What??" I mentioned yesterday I couldn't play FischerRandom, let alone at rapid time controls.
@ChesstoImpress15 күн бұрын
The openings can be a minefield in Fischer Random. Nothing to hold on to.
@gillrowley16 күн бұрын
I've never played a game of FischerRandom. I suppose if I could get to move 10 with normal developing moves, I might be OK. But I'll stick with the normal set up for now. 🙂

Yes, for us mere mortals it’s not necessary to take opening theory out of the game, so we may as well stick with the standard position.

Why died Ivanchuk cry, sob, wail, and bawl so much after losing? He lost nothing by losing. He would have gained nothing by winning. Plus, he should be satisfied knowing that not only did he lose on time, but he had a losing position in the final move as well!
@ChesstoImpress17 күн бұрын
I guess it was the stress and intensity of the whole day. This was round 11. It all became a bit too much. In round 1 his reaction may not have been as extreme.

The last one leads to kind of symmetric end positions. One time with black king one h file and other time on the 1 row. Pretty difficult solution. I am always amazed about the creators of such puzzles.

Yes, you’re right, the mating constructions on the first rank and h-file are similar.

Excellent video! You know my opinion on studying puzzles. I’m a bit disappointed I was very wrong in the first one. I expected something more complicated and did not find the solution. The second one was too easy, while for the third I got 4 moves right. I lost myself at K going back to e1.

Great video as always. I agree, there was a very high difference in difficulty between the first two puzzles and the last one. In fact a few months ago I had the idea of doing a very similar format like this myself, for either KZbin or Twitch, but abandoned it because of my microphone not working properly. By now I've gotten a new one. Spare time is now a bit harder to come by, but we'll see :)

@@ChesstoImpress I agree, though I might offer those videos as kind of a learning resource to my fellow club members, especially the youth. Then german is definitely preferable. I also thought about doing one language live on Twitch and the other one on KZbin. For now I still have time to decide. I don't really have time to record until saturday anyway.

This whole thing is weird. Why would you sell tickets to let people hover over the chess boards in tournament play? Secondly, why would you then allow people to just stand and stare when someone is in distress. Thirdly, why are the people choosing to stand there and stare?

chess is by far the hardest game i have ever played. one cannot truly lie to itself, which makes mistakes - especially the blundery ones - incredible hard to swallow, because you want to take your brain out and smash it to pieces. it makes you want to quit the game, but its appeal, the capability of the human mind, always draws one back in. chess is - for loss of a better term - truly hell xD

Very humiliating to lose early in the game. I had an acquaintance who always delayed castling so that he could develop his pieces. Leaving his king in the center consistently lost him the game.

I also tend to avoid main opening variants, especially the tactical ones, because i don't want to study all those pesky lines and rather just play chess :D 10:14 It's quite a common and natural move to castle, if f2/f7 is attacked twice that way. But avoid castling into a checkmate :D

There is a magnificent follow up on this stunning 1983 composition by Leonid Yarosh. Israeli/US composer Gady Costeff, after working on it for 45 years, has produced a correct endgame study (so NOT problem) with a full BABSON task, published in the Dutch Endgame magazine EG #238. The stipulation is Black to Move, White wins and again, after each promotion for Black, White mirrors Black's promotion. This is an absolute first in history. So far, only three quarter BABSON studies had been composed (by Jan Rusinek and Gady Costeff himself)
@ChesstoImpressАй бұрын
Hi René, thanks for your extensive message. I have been told that Costeff's Babson study is not correct. I was told that black can make a draw with 1...Nd6. Costeff got very close, but has not quite got there yet. Having said that, I have a lot of admiration for his efforts. He surely is one of the greats!
