What he deals with is a very inexact science, all his hypothesis (apart from his facts) are at their core subjective, ad-hoc and biased and by definition are heavily laden with a 21st retrospection. For all we know, only his facts can be debated and contested, his theories are just his intuitions running wild. Jesus was himself a gnostic. In that there was a secret to what the kingdom of God was and how to enter it. But knowing the secret was available to anyone who could think it through. All explained in Mark 4:10. And the usage of "He who has ears to hear, let him hear". That was the good news and his mission. Explained in Mark 1:14 and 1:38. The clues to uncovering the secret are all in the Gospels.
