I don't know why, but white is my favourite color on the 986 Boxster. I don't care for white on any other car, but there's just something about it when its on a Boxster.

A lovely colour scheme. White 986’s seem to be extremely rare in the UK. Most are silver, followed by black, blue and then grey. Less common are guards red, and a few yellow or green. Out of close to 180 986 boxsters for sale in the UK at present there is only a single one in white as its original factory colour ( a base model).

Fairly similar here. When I was searching for mine across the entire US it was maybe 15-20 white out of probably 500 for sale. I think I saw maybe 1-2 Guards Red. They are rare here as well. There is another Boxster channel on KZbin called @attainableluxury and she has a beautiful red Boxster with the hardtop. I believe hers is another red that is even more rare to find.

You are far kinda to the “shop” where you had significant work done than I would likely be in a similar situation, i.e. zen like calm versus angry pit bull. Well done for tackling it yourselves. I am looking for a 986s in the UK at present (admittedly I am still torn between a late 986s and a 987.1s) and I have a wish list of options, exterior colour, heated seats, interior spec, year range, etc … to which I have added “a Kurt” 😁

Im in camp classic. I've loved the 986 since it first came out and I was a kid. It was perfect just the way it came from the factory. If I ever do become an owner, it will be of the most original one I can find. No cringey aftermarket lights or body kits that others have added in a silly attempt at bringing it up to modern styling standards.

Nice conversation. I'm in the 3rd camp. I have had my 2000 Boxster for almost 3 years, 3rd owner. Bought it at 175k, now has 195k. I just drive it (3 seasons mostly) and have only two things that are not stock/original: Stronger halogen headlights but minus the orange bits and a short throw shifter, this care of my local Nyack, NY Porsche experts. Top up or down, it's just fun and loves curvy roads in the country. Original IMS and original clutch.

This article sure is rich on images, very informative and useful for 986 fans, but labelling it "The BEST" in such a strong fashion was an oversell IMO. The text itself is robotic and lacks any kind of flare or even a clear abstract of the 986 Boxster. Putting it so high above anything else written about the 986 creates a feeling like you are unable to appreciate aspects like use of language or art of writing.

Indeed the word “Best” is subjective from person to person. In my research this was the best article containing the most amount of information I’ve found for the Boxster 986. It’s a pretty safe bet that the majority of car fans are looking for information and photos vs a finely crafted narrative story. My intent was certainly not to mislead anyone. Very sorry if it came across that way for you. If you find a better article please do share it here in the comments so other Boxster fans can benefit from your research. Thanks so much for the comment, I hope the article was at least somewhat interesting.

@@Boxster986Fan Fair enough. Just one piece of thought: if we're imagening an open minded car enthusiast in search of new experiences or the (next) right car for him, then what's more useful for him - a full of detail technical description of a model or an article that paints a picture of the driving experience and character of that car? That's my way of saying that I'm far from sure about what you said the majority of enthusiasts are in search of in the web. But for someone who is already hooked by the 986 it's a very useful read, no doubt about that.

My 987S loves it between 4000 to 6000rpm. Hard to do in traffic but I try to get it up around six in second gear at least a couple of times every time I take her out. Even though the redline is up around 8000rpm, I reckon that's pushing it a little too hard for reasonable everyday use. I'm guessing every owner will say something different, I say listen to your engine, she'll tell you what she likes.

Agreed to listen/feel for what's best for your own car. Also, it can trick you. I started to notice a bad vibration at 3000-3200 which was a typical spot to be in everyday traffic. I had the motor mount replaced and it completely eliminated the problem. It was extremely annoying so I was very happy that the issue was resolved.

My 01S has the additional fabric piece on the inside which I believe was standard on the S models. I am the original owner and the car has just over 70k miles. I originally intended to buy a 996, but after test driving both, it was an easy decision due to the much better handling characteristics of the mid-engine design. I live in Colorado and have taken many trips in it from El Paso to Banff, and all of the western states including the Pacific Coast highway. Our longest trip was for three weeks and was easy to do given the ample luggage space these little cars have. I’m enjoying your videos!

I have a 99 I picked up to replace an '84 944 that I bought as a birthday present to myself and sold a few years later. The 944 was a solid foot into the Porsche world but the '80s cars I could afford just didn't have enough grunt. The 99 feels like everything I could ever want in a car and even though mine is high mileage, it's worn it well and I never want to let this one go. I've been hunting down original parts and am aiming for as close to a new feeling original car as I can get. Looking forward to many more years and miles, cheers!

I upgraded to the same after market glass window you have but in hindsight I should have paid the extra and gone with Porsche OEM from 2003/2004 instead. The Porsche one has a much bigger glass window plus the fourth frame for more compactness in a variety of colour choices that imo is worth the extra money.

I wasn’t ever sure if the 2003/2004 Porsche OEM with the new frame could be put on the 1997-2002 models. I had loosely heard it could be but never really read/found an official answer. Are you saying that it definitely CAN be put on the 1997-2002 models? That would be great question to finally have an answer to. 🙂

I think that the key thing is not to lug the engine (Trying to accelerate in too high a gear) and to use the full rev range regularly. The car is really on song between 4.2k and 6.5k RPM but it's happy cruising at 1.5k. Just change down if you are going to accelerate.

I bought my S new in 2003. It started as a daily driver/Nurburgring car while I was living in Germany and clocked up 60k miles with at least 10k of that done on track. I then moved countries, had a kid and was given company cars so the 986 ended up neglected in my garage for 8 years. I got it back on the road 3 years ago and it's now a Sunday/project car which I'm working through on my drive. It'll never be sold. Along with maintenance and restoration work, I'm just doing some light styling mods to freshen it up a bit (spacers, side stripes, black bits etc). It's now 21 years old, has 75k miles and is in great shape on the whole.

Are they there on your Boxster? My guess is the plastic gets brittle after 20 years and the tabs break when people take them off for one reason or another. Or maybe a mechanic takes them off and forgets to put them back in. I didn't have them for the first 6 months because I wasn't even aware they were supposed to be there. For how affordable they are, it's worth it to have them even to just keep leaves and such out of there where they can block the water drains under the clamshell.
