We did a $1600 dealer repair for $10! If you are worried about working on your Boxster, don't be! It's actually a really easy car to work on. This is the moment I realized I could work on this car and I had zero experience working on cars of any kind.

Great experience and yeah I’ve worked in my 2000 986 for last 24 years. It’s been really fun. Knowing nothing to knowing more than the dealer does. It’s pretty awesome. Least it was just lose. Otherwise licking the camshafts and changing a tensioner sounds daunting but pretty easy TBH keep up the great experiences!

I'm "graduating" from Miata's to a Boxster and doing my homework. I'm a short few days from making my purchase. Service and service costs have been a concern. I love the way you go about your videos, and the conversational way that you have in describing your experiences. It translates! I subscribed and I'll look forward to more. Thank you.

Means so much! Thanks! It’s incredibly time consuming to put this content together so when I hear it’s helping people it really helps me keep going.

You are far kinda to the “shop” where you had significant work done than I would likely be in a similar situation, i.e. zen like calm versus angry pit bull. Well done for tackling it yourselves. I am looking for a 986s in the UK at present (admittedly I am still torn between a late 986s and a 987.1s) and I have a wish list of options, exterior colour, heated seats, interior spec, year range, etc … to which I have added “a Kurt” 😁

“…to which I have added, “a Kurt”😂 Best comment to date! Yes knowing “a Kurt” is a key part of the equation.

Of course they go straight to replacing the whole system. It's a racket. I hate that you can't just depend on them not to try stuff like that and have to dig yourself whenever you can. My older bike had tons of oil leaks too. Lots to patch up. Hoses degrade. But if you can do the work, it's really cheap repairs if you have the time to poke around.

Yep. Certainly changed my life when it comes to cars. Once I got past the worry that I would break something and make it worse, it’s been awesome to learn to fix these completely doable problems. Am I going to be removing the engine anytime soon, ha, nope, not brave enough to tackle that yet. But there are hundreds of other things that are easy-ish that will save so much money.

Out of curiosity, what was the name of the shop you went to in Az? I live in the Phoenix area and want to make certain i dont take my 987.2 there

Boxter? Saving money? That's an oxymoron. You want to save money, stay away from the Boxter.

Ha! No doubt there are things about the 986 Boxster that weren’t the smartest design (IMS bearing etc) which also apply the 911 996 But it is a much easier car to work on yourself than people think because it’s so analog as opposed to any modern Porsche that you are basically handcuffed to a dealership or specialty shop. But any 20+ year old car will need repairs regardless of brand.😎
