The side kick is a long range weapon, no? If I’m using it then I’m in a position to not be reached with a cross or a jab and even if they do touch me with it I’m smashing my heel into their solar-plexus essentially shutting them down. Im not saying using (the long guard) lead hand out and rear hand up isn’t good, it is, but Ive used side kick all my life and unless I’m up against a 6’5 plus Giant I don’t get touched up when side kicking, especially the stepping or hopping version which puts my head back a bit more then a more upright version. Not criticizing nor critiquing, just waxing, good video 👊🏻
@jkdprocessАй бұрын
@@leroyhayes3251 Thanks for the comment! And excellent points! I agree on all accounts. I would add to be mindful that you may side kick at long range, but your opponent may not stay there, no? He may rush in as you’re kicking and could jam your kick or maybe he closes in and catches you leg or he moves to the side and you miss your kick or slide off him. Or what if he always moves back? If you put up a long guard/punch in punching range, when he moves back, he’ll now be in kicking range for your side kick. There are infinite possibilities in which you may find the long guard useful. Thanks again for the comment and insight! I can tell you definitely know your stuff! ☺️

I find a lot of people are convinced that Bruce still practiced wing chun in jkd. I have found a lot of evidence that not only Bruce stopped practicing wing chun by 1970, he said that jkd is separate from wing chun. Another is many think that jkd is a philosophy. In a 1972 Hong Kong interview Bruce never said that jkd is a philosophy but he did say that jkd is a style and gave an example of adaptation in the movie fist of fury when bob baker put Bruce in an arm lock, he bit him because the rest of his body is immobilized.
@This_Man90Ай бұрын
In the Pierre Berton show, Bruce literally said that he didn't believe in styles anymore. In much of his literature he explained that he couldn't teach people something without it having a name, hence the name jkd.. but that in no shape or form it was meant to be a style one could or should copy exactly. Also, jun fan jkd contains elements of wing chun. We practised things like chi sao and trapping.
@axelstone3131Ай бұрын
@@This_Man90style is probably not the best word. But it most definitely IS a practical skillset that does have its own body mechanics footwork and structure. It also has its own principles that are a blueprint towards efficiency, simplicity and directness. Are you familiar with the progressive weapons chart? Many people aren’t, including so called JKD “instructors” A quote directly from Bruce and not from a 3rd hand source: “As in boxing or fencing, JKD is a step by step project where every move must be repeated many times". Bruce Lee What do you think JKD is?
@This_Man90Ай бұрын
@@axelstone3131 In short, i think a good jkd school teaches you how to express yourself in a scientific way. So instead of swinging your arms like a caveman, you'll learn to be economic and balanced.. while still maintaining that signature of the self in moving.
@axelstone3131Ай бұрын
@@This_Man90 that what the progressive weapons chart is, that’s what the principals of simplicity, directness and efficiency are supposed to do. But the truth is most JKD people chose not to follow the principles. Most JKD people look like mma people. It’s like people don’t realise the way Bruce moved is because he found it to be the most efficient way to get from A to B quickly, but people say you are copying. Are you copying for driving a car because another person drives a car to get someplace faster? It’s stupid. The internet is full of stupid people not even understanding their own martial art or even following the founders guidelines. People want to do whatever they want without understanding this blended mess of arts they have is not efficient or direct and you just end up back at mma again. People love styles.

I believe much of what Bruce taught and passed down over the last 60 years by his students has been modified to a great extent by the various input from many others who have learned and taught the art in their own way. What Bruce taught in the Seattle, Oakland and San Francisco, has changed alot especailly after the exodus of original team members Jesse Glover and James Demile. Then, Dan Inosanto opted to apply his own JKD concepts around Bruce's original teachings which became popular deuing the 80's and 90's.
