there are lots of factors to making a living in this field - you may notice I do not talk about releasing music on albums or trailer tracks as a profitable income in this video. that's because in my opinion and experience, the consistent money is in creating bespoke music for major film, tv and gaming projects. appreciate you checking out the video!

I'm precisely in the works of improving my skills to go and look for my first gig soon. Going for indie films to step in the business looks like a good idea. Contacting other composers to work with them sounds bold, but he who doesn't try will never succeed for sure. Thank you very much for all your videos and valuable advice.

You have also got me back interested in the Hans Zimmer Percussion which I purchased very early in my writing journey then forgot about! I know sacrilege !! So thank you for the brilliant content. One request; Would you possibly do a Studio Tour Video as your setup looks incredible and I am always interested in how you guys have your kit setup and what you use. Just a thought .. the content itself is the priority though :) thanks Jonas.

How much are you glued to a click and tempo grid for this kind of cue? I can see that there are certain hits where the chord changes and everything comes together, but for things like the reverse artifacts and any solo-ish ad libbed parts in there do you just ignore the tempo/meter?
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 8 күн бұрын
For lose pads or the reverse artifacts I’m not too glued - basically when it’s something that makes it so you can tell there’s a tempo and rhythm it’s very much on the grid - but other wise on a cue like this a if I’m there’s no live players I do whatever sounds right

Something I find very frustrating when using ambient pads is the rhythmic LFO pulsing that is sometimes impossible to track down in the instruments. It can often be very obvious and takes away from the general feeling. I can hear it in your Singing Bell Harmonics patch.

Definitely knows what he’s talking about! Still, if you are at the top of your game in almost any line of work you’ll make good money. Gotta remember that getting to that level as a composer or as any artistic person can be about as challenging as finding a needle in a haystack. That’s the part of this narrative that gets glossed over. Think about this too. Do you really want to turn your passion in life-writing music-into a job? Work is work. It can be a grueling slog. And once your love of music becomes a highly stressful affair then an important part of what makes you happy in life is gone. A better option would be to find a decent teaching job and then invest wisely in real estate. Over time you can build an investment portfolio of your holdings and live quite comfortably -and compose on the side either as a hobby or maybe you’ll find a few paying scoring to picture jobs and still savor your love of music without arguing over royalties and whatever. Something to think about. Of course composing, mixing and mastering music on a professional level would be no small undertaking!!! Those really are three separate and highly challenging fields of study. Careful not to chase windmills with the allure of what appears to be a glamorous and lucrative career. For a tiny percentage it definitely is.
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 18 күн бұрын
I appreciate your thoughts on this - my opinion is a bit different because what you mention here isn’t just relevant to composing.. lots of careers seem glamorous but require enormous sacrifice - this line of work is no different. At least for me making music has been preferable to the countless other ways one can earn a living. If you get stressed out making music you’ll probably get stressed doing other things. Like most things in life it’s all about your attitude. There’s positives and negatives to every career including this one - and just from my experience Id recommend anyone pursue it until they decide the positives no longer outweigh the negatives
@dolittle6781

@@jonasfriedman …agree with your last sentence…but music isn’t the same as other careers, it’s a passion, a calling, at least for me.
@dolittle6781
@dolittle6781 24 күн бұрын
Well yes he is right overall. But being a media composer may sound good/glamorous but in essence he or she is really just a sole proprietor contract worker-a house painter or carpet cleaner going from one job to another. You are a gig worker yet you don’t even work for a company usually. Unlikely you’ll ever get health and dental or vision insurance coverage from your employer unless maybe you’re at the academy award winning level as a composer. The work may sound glamorous but slogging along under the pressure of time in your bedroom studio alone day after day and up all night is a lifestyle that can be very unrewarding from a mental health perspective. There may be more negatives than positives in this line of work. Many are called but few are chosen. If you aren’t hellbent on being a film composer consider another line of work. Of course if you are independently wealthy then sure give it your all.
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 23 күн бұрын
This is true - the work is not very glamorous and it is a gig to gig job which is not for everyone -- it’s about being an entrepreneur and being able to handle the ups and downs of owning a business and being competitive. however it’s not as impossible as many think, and I certainly wasn’t wealthy when starting out. You just have to go one job at a time and slowly build a snowball effect for your career which takes long time - it can be at least a decade in a lot of cases. But each year it gets a bit easier and more rewarding creatively and financially in my experience.

Makes sense. Also makes sense to use a temp track of the kind of music you want to write. Let’s face it, there’s nothing completely new under the sun. Every piece of music is consciously or unconsciously based on some other music you’ve heard. Just don’t make your new work too similar to the temp track. Don’t plagiarize it or you’ll get sued and you’ll ruin your reputation forever and then get kicked out of the film music industry.
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 23 күн бұрын
Thanks for your input. I’m not personally a fan of temp tracks - but to each their own. Whenever possible I prefer to not have a temp track as it makes the process for fun and creatively rewarding - also I find we usually get something that is better for the project than if we used a piece of music from a different film or series
@dolittle6781
@dolittle6781 23 күн бұрын
@@jonasfriedman …agreed-not really a fan either but let’s face it, if you are given a film to score and you have 12 hours to produce the finished product of the scoring, what ya gonna do? Who ya gonna call? Can’t really wait for inspiration-the creative juices to flow. Just gotta get ‘er done and fast. Besides, as you know, sometimes directors will give you a temp track and say that they want you to create something similar. But we must always be careful not to cross the line and plagiarize someone else’s work, as we fully realize, but newbies might not know this and that crossing the line destroys careers.
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 23 күн бұрын
@dolittle6781 you’re absolutely right - however it’s worth noting that- when deadlines are tight like that, after you’ve been doing the work long enough you sort of know what needs to happen in a scene. I very seldomly “wait for the creative juices to flow” and don’t need temp to dictate the scene either. Like every skill - over time you just gain the ability to sit down and write and usually with pretty good accuracy to what the producers are looking for again this is just my personal experience
@dolittle6781
@dolittle6781 23 күн бұрын
@@jonasfriedman …makes a lot of sense-having a ton of experience getting started makes getting started “easier,” if that’s the right word. Don’t want to push the temp track thing too far but one’s experience in a sense becomes or replaces a temp track. It’s good to understand the value of experience as it relates to starting a composition. And it’s a great tip! Experience is a superpower if you have it! I must confess that if I need to start composing a work that’s supposed to harken back to the Baroque music style, I will listen to recordings of some J.S. Bach’s music or even take one bar from one of his pieces, change it up a bit to make it my own, and build an original, longer composition from the seed I created. There’s a tiny but very well written and delightful book on the market titled something like “Steal Like an Artist,” and I think it’s worth reading. Everything in it is legally, morally, and ethically sound. It just talks about allowing yourself to be creatively influenced by other artists and that it’s an age old practice. Many other topics are broached. Of course the author doesn’t mean steal as in rip off or plagiarize. He just reminds us that nothing is completely original. Fascinating read!

Excellent! Love the arc you created. A big concern on the business side is how competitive the field is and how to make money. And ya kinda have to be a go getter, gotta be able to sell yourself. If you are not such a person it’s time to start learning how. Then of course be a great composer. Don’t forget to be a nice guy without letting people take advantage of you.
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 23 күн бұрын
Thanks! You are right you have to be a go getter - but that’s any business honestly. Being a composer is about being a business owner and entrepreneur 95% of the time. There are few employee opportunities- even when I worked as an “additional music composer” under someone else I was always a private contractor with my own business and the lead composer was my client. It wasn’t an employee employer relationship

I have one question about, when using loops and samples in this way, are you at all worried about tripping up content ID systems? I got this question a lot when the video was released …the sounds that I’m using are completely fair used due to the license you get when purchasing the sample packs from the company.
