You are correct, I am over 6 ft and should have raised it before I made all the other improvements. Actually it is very comfortable to run as is as is and sometimes I sit on a high stool ie semi standing if I’m going to be at it a long time. Even though low, it’s really saved out my old back. Thanks for your comment.

Looks beautiful! I'd love to see it when the snow is gone. I live down at Lake Almanor on the peninsula and I wish we had gotten the snow you have. Last week we had a guy come in and clear some off the roof and of course we had several days of sun after that. I bought a tractor last year and it's been a godsend, my wife thinks it's an expensive toy but worth it. It's getting harder for me to clear the berms at the end of the drive, which can be 4' to 5' high x 8' wide. If I hadn't bought the tractor we would be down to a single car with the other vehicles buried and my snowblower would not be able to clear the sides of the drive any more. As it is, my front yard is 2/3 covered in 9' of snow.

Thanks for the comments and explaining your situation. My wife has a cousin in Cromberg so we go along the east shore of Almanor every fall on the way over to visit. Sounds like you had quite a bit more snow than us and I think your “expensive toy” is essential with that amount of snow. It was sad and shocking to see the devastation from the Dixie fire and others in the region as we made our way over to the Graeagle area. Hopefully the worst of the snow is over for this year and we can look forward to full lakes and reservoirs for a change.

Very beautiful. Please stay safe and God Bless you for making a trail to reach the bird feeders. I'm 35 miles NW of Chicago and we probably have had only about a total of 1 foot of snow this whole winter. It is so different than 40-60 years ago. We have the occasional big storm. February 2011 when Lake Shore Drive became a parking lot with people stranded in cars.

Wow. You must be an engineer. That's so genius. Is that the original wedge? Its so tall, which is advantageous for those size rounds. I've seen four way splitter adapters that slide over that style wedge. I wonder if it will work with yours.
@siskiyouwoodsmann4279
@siskiyouwoodsmann4279 Жыл бұрын
No just an old retired Caterpillar mechanic, but that said, in the field many times when no parts were available we had to come up with solutions to get the equipment up and running. No the taller wedge is something I built and installed 30 years ago due to the large rounds that I often deal with. As far as the four way wedge, I’ve thought many times that I would build one, but my old machine is only a 28 ton and with the knots in most of the wood I split I actually think that many times it would slow me down. At any rate, thanks for your kind comments!

Mmm, I see your wood lift with gas engine, I took off my gas engine to go to the electric cause in the garage, I can't run the log splitter with gas. So I'll try to see if my electric 1/5 hp will pick up fairly decent log round Not 33" diameter log cause too heavy to move around let alone split darn thing

@siskiyouwoodsmann4279
@siskiyouwoodsmann4279 Жыл бұрын
I will Roger, but it’ll probably after winter as we are in the snow season here. It’s basically .325” 3x4” angle iron fit up to my wedge and the top strap is welded to the angle iron but not the wedge. Drilled and tapped the top of the wedge and the bolt is just there to hold it down. Not seen in the video are two short pieces of .325” round stock welded to the i-beam on the back side of the angle iron so the force of splitting the wood can’t push the angle iron back at the bottom and spread it (if that makes any sense?) Thanks for the comment.

For the safety of the machine I'd be putting a spring inline with your autoretract stop. If it wasn't a super strong spring you could also use this to override the kick out so that if you had an over length log you could go the extra inch or so to accommodate.
@siskiyouwoodsmann4279
@siskiyouwoodsmann4279 Жыл бұрын
Allan, thanks for the comment and I considered a spring as you said because I was also concerned about a pile up and damage. That said, on the first trial run I noticed that I could manually retract the cylinder albeit slowly due to the way I welded the washer to the end of the tube (not intensional just dumb luck) it has a profile sort of like an acorn nut ie very little surface contact so the lever can be pulled back and with the slack in the pins and link allows for enough movement to slowly retract the cylinder for those situations where a rogue long cut shows up. Also the hose clamp used for adjustment is tightened only enough to trip the valve spool and if held on purpose, the tube will slip though the grip and be pushed back into the outer tube without damage. Thanks again for viewing with a critical eye to see the areas of concern, I appreciate that!

Yes you are right about the splitter being a bit too low as many others have mentioned and I’m over 6’ so that adds to the problem. When I started this mod over six years ago, I was focused on a lift aid to keep from grunting those heavy rounds up onto the splitter. It was a prototype in the beginning, but after building and installing all of the components, it became obvious that virtually every component would have to be changed to accomplish that. In reality, it’s really not painful to use and I do have a bad lower back. While splitting, I always have three points of support going on ie both legs and one arm. In the beginning, it would have been very easy to raise the i beam, but at this point not so much. Thanks for viewing and your comments!

Ok, I'm now going to use your video to build my table. I'm 63 and struggling to either lift or role my logs to the splitter. I like seeing details you provided with this video, you have helped a lot. Thanks. I do suggest that as you get older, find a way to raise your bed so your not bent over like you are. If I can come up with a way, I'll post it for all to copy. Back again, with how well your splitter is handling those rounds, might I suggest welding a horizontal blade to your vertical blade. If you do, be sure the new blade is off set from the vertical about an inch or so so that the cylinder isn't trying to split 4 ways at one time.

Yes you are correct and I think I’ve got things pretty much sorted out. I’ve since made two more upgrades, an adjustable return stop that is adjustable to whatever length of rounds I’m splitting (saves a lot of time). Then I fabricated a removable attachment for the wedge for wet fibrous wood to aid in spreading it apart quicker. I made a short vid on those. Thanks for checking my video out and commenting, I appreciate that.

Love it! I saw another one similar, but I like that you put a hook to hold the table up for a log holder. Curious: why did you make a ladder instead of a smooth piece of metal or wood? Seems like it would be easier to slide on a flat surface. I have a 3pt. hitch splitter that NEEDS a lifter like yours. I am 65 and those logs don't feel so light anymore!...hahahaha...they never felt light, who am I kidding! Also curious: I am kind of surprised that your splitter can handle such a tall wedge. I would love to add some height to my wedge, but fear I might not have enough force to push some of my knotty and crotchy logs through. Thanks for posting the video. I can use your ideas while using materials that I already have. Nice work!

Thanks Nut Grower here’s a link kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnXKipZridCIi6M to a more recent video and you can see I made more improvements. Made a better larger out-feed table and a simpler way to hold the lift ladder up. On the wedge vs power ratio, I built the wedge years ago with that in mind since the splitter is only 28 tons and you can see it’s not a blunt ¥ but a lesser degree angle> so on the tough stuff it literally cuts through the wood and the easy stuff pops like you’d expect. And the lift ladder ended up that way because that’s what I had on hand at the time. I will say that I would build it that way on purpose again since it helps keep the big half splits on the ladder and not rolling into the work area. Thanks again for the comment!

Great splitter- do you have a release where the lift doesn’t go up and down when you are splitting the same log? Seems if it would stay in the up position it could be a great table to slide your log onto once in half to continue to split the other half. Nice job tho will save your back for sure 👍🏻

No it is a one to one ratio, they just get the cable where it needs to be. That said, because the cable is at the end of the ladder, it has maximum leverage in that configuration.
