I also have two " PARKS " ( cows) they are very mellow animals and gain fast......easy keepers.....just a bit on the heavy side though. Train them with a hot wire before you ever leave them out ! Feed them a bit of grain under a hot wire. They will learn fast ! Get in the pen....keep your distance and slowly work with each one. I was told if they are wild they will always be wild. Totally not true ! If you work with them......feed them ear corn out of your hand they will become pets ! I delt with this same sort of issue when I bought my 20 cow heard. They had never been on a concrete floor. The cows were on the farm for a week before they came on the cement floor. A week later two aborted. No water. Bottom line.......work with them..... play with them.......tease them. Cows will calm down ! However after 2 years.......sell any animal that cant conform ! Dont need trouble makers !

I only joked because they came off a farm that they would come right up to me. The first time in pasture they didn't know what to think of the poly wire but respected the perimeter wire. Everyone has fit right in and have had zero issues since the first day on pasture.

@jimmyjohnson7041
@jimmyjohnson7041 2 ай бұрын
So if thats true....... grazing 50% of height ??? Then what are the calves suppose to eat ? Raw stems ? The cows are already eating that ! Of which decreases milk production in a major way !!!! That leaves the calves rate of gain where ???? They have stems to eat....and little no milk ? As a previous dairy farmer I know what it takes to produce milk ! You dont get milk from a cow feeding them stems !!!!!
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 2 ай бұрын
@jimmyjohnson7041 as dairy farmers we worked for the cow and brought them everything. Learning how to graze, it's a lot to learn but quite fascinating. When we say 50% of the height, that means graze down to 50% not start at 50%. Then everyone has plenty of food, The 50% is a rule of thumb. If they eat the top 50%, the grass is growing back almost immediately. If you graze down to 25% of the height, the plant now needs 1-2 weeks to rebuild roots before it starts growing again. If you graze it down like lawn, depending on species and time of year, that might be the last grazing for that bay. The refractometer helps with steers. Young grass high in protein will take fat off a steer, so a straw bale while grass is rich helps a lot and small bays so they don't run. But if you can watch brix readings and let that pasture age a little, when the brix get high is when the plant has good energy and will put on weight like silage.
