Interesting the Disabled Persons Railcard worked for the First Class fare for you. Last time I tried to do that, albeit it wasn't on GWR but on ScotRail, and what was Virgin West Coast, they both said the railcard was only for Standard Class fares. But that was pre-2020, so maybe the rules have changed. Or perhaps the operators can set their own policies. Honestly, those past experiences made me just give-up trying. But I should try again maybe, as sometimes, at particular times of day, the quieter carriage can be worth an extra £20 or £40. (Though not an extra £100.)
@Sim0nTrains10 сағат бұрын
@kaitlyn__L I think personally the information that they mentioned is wrong, the railcards do work in 1st class and I have done some Virgin Trains 1st Class journeys in the past from London Euston. Also the Disabled Railcard as far as I know, is the only Railcard that you can use all day, even in the morning peak, as most railcards are limited to be used after 9am or 930am Also some advice for 1st class fares is have a look in advance as you can get some good fares but the prices do vary through the day

Pilning station has an interesting history ... Before the Severn Tunnel was built the low level branch led to the New Passage pier (before extension to/from Severn Beach), for a ferry to Portskewett, where there were trains to South Wales. Also before the Severn Bridge it was the loading point for a Motorail service through the Severn Tunnel to Severn Tunnel Junction. Also it was the location of the Severn Tunnel emergency train until some time after the S/T accident in 1991 - for which the rescue efforts were a debacle. This history somewhat explains the 2 stations & the wide open space, industrial fencing etc in the yard outside

I don't think he'd want to go to Euston now. It's my mainline station into London. It's horrible. Paddington seems a much nicer station.
@Sim0nTrainsКүн бұрын
Can agree that Euston is horrible, especially the Euston Stampede amd how packed that concourse can be duribg problems, but before the 1960 rebuild, Euston was a nicer station.

Well i suppose for £35 you at least got a seat by the window. But the GWR 1 st class option is indeed pretty naff compared to Avanti and LNER. Anyway, worth it for the experience, as you say. Mind you, I wonder how many ordinary travellers were standing because of all the train geeks riding the line? My social media was full of people doing it! Great video. Thanks for sharing. Happy to have more VO 👍

An interesting historical document. Sounds like GWR tried to minimise stress by mandating "reservations only" - seems sensible. The Euston line is very close to the Paddington line in the Willesden/ Old Oak Common area only half a mile. In this area there are lines to Waterloo and Victoria via Clapham Junction, and the other way to the St Pancras, Kings Cross and Liverpool Street lines.

That price is ridiculous. I paid £39.6 for a first class advance single from London Euston to Exeter St Davids on that same day with railcard discount. Booked back in October.
@Sim0nTrainsКүн бұрын
That is a good price from London Euston to Exeter, but I would agree that price is ridiculous between Swindon to London Euston for a journey roughly a hour and 20 minutes but I paid it so it help with the filming slightly. Also, did you get any refreshments on your train?

@ lots of GWR cancellations of both Worcester-Bristol and Swindon local services on Sunday. Almost as bad as West Midlands have been of late. Imagine if LNER ran their trains from London Euston or perhaps from London Liverpool Street to Edinburgh Waverley, York, Leeds, Doncaster and Newcastle. As there has been plans for LNER, Hull Trains and Lumo to run to & from Liverpool Street. If King’s Cross station is closed for engineering work. Never expected to see GWR run their trains from London Euston.
@srfurleyКүн бұрын
Didn’t the opposite happen, with some trains which would normally have gone to Euston being diverted to Paddington, and others to Kensington Olympia or Marylebone, during the rebuilding of Euston station in the ‘60s?
@thetiredscot7821Күн бұрын
Theres an alternative Timeline where Brunel got his way and GWR trains terminated at Euston. As interesting a scenario that is we wouldn't have gotten Paddington and if history had followed a similar path then we might have lost St Pancras.

Good video Simon, nice to see my some of my most local stations showcased. Kemble is my favourite, a lovely station that I sometimes just sit at and relax. It sees more passengers than might be expected of a small village station these days, as it also serves as the local station for the town of Cirencester (hence the large car park!). The original landowner, Squire Gordon, wasn't a fan of the railways, hence the otherwise unnecessary tunnel when leaving Kemble, and it was his objections which saw Tetbury Road become the station for the area, with, as you say, Kemble only being for interchange between the Cirencester and Cheltenham lines for several decades.
