Full mudguards preferably on both wheels but a must for the back?
@Reastle14 күн бұрын
That was an oversight - yes back mudguard for sure. I don’t find front that effective tbh but back is v good especially if cycling with people

Luxury right! Yeh mainly a cold ride thing

Continuing the top tips theme, would be super interesting to learn more about how your training/testing, gear, nutrition, racing (swim starts, sighting, pacing, swim exits, transitions...), etc has evolved looking back to being an age grouper to then a pro triathlete over the last couple of years. What works and doesn't work for you, some of the biggest wins...great videos as always !🙂

Man, I could do with a couple of weeks training in Spain now. The last many mornings it has been dangerously icy around where I live, making running a bit of a Bambi on ice sort of experience, and cycling completely out of the question.

Loving the videos! Completing a 70.3 has been a bucket list goal for a long time. I swam competitively at school and I've been running consistently for a while, but have always had a bit of a mental block/confidence issues with the bike side of things. Hoping to overcome that this year and get myself booked in for a tri 2026! Loving the videos, really helps keep the motivation to keep training and challenging myself. I hope the calf injury is healing quick for you :)

Good luck with the comeback. I’m coming back from a total hip replacement and while clearly not in your class of athlete, all your tips are what I’ve found. I would add, listen to your physio and coach and watch out for other muscle stresses. If it gets sore somewhere else, because you’ve been off running and other bits wither, stop and seek advice. Worst thing is to injure something else, be off for longer and lose more fitness. On the flip side, you’re going to get soreness, so don’t panic if something is sore, but get it checked.

Ruth, I’ve enjoyed this return to run mini series as I’m recovering from a back/ribs injury. Re the treadmill, I believe Lucy C-B does the majority of her training indoors. Not suggesting for one minute that you should follow suit but is it something you’ve considered? Thanks
@Reastle114 күн бұрын
I would struggle mentally if I did majority of my training indoors. Spent enough time doing that when I was working full time. Mentally struggle if I haven’t had fresh air. So used the treadmill a lot initially as I talked about for safety, but now very much enjoying being able to head out

I think having a treadmill, or access to a treadmill, would be fantastic not just for easing back into running after an injury but also for general training and not least for those icy days where there just isn't any traction to be had outdoors. They do seem to be quite expensive though, so I'll probably just have to win the lottery before getting one, which means I will need to get lottery tickets, which I can't afford 😂

Thanks for these videos - I've just gone back and watched your last one again. I've been over-confident in managing a current calf injury, with 2 failed returns to running. Sometimes you just need someone constantly screaming in your ear to be patient!

It’s so hard because you are so desperate to be running again, but just have to think the extra few days or few weeks it takes is so worth it to not be up and down all the time. Good luck!

I'm struggling coming back from injury. I was hit by a car while out cycling in February of 2024. I have just now been cleared to start running again in January of 2025. I have zero fitness, absolutely zero fitness. I have not been able to any form of exercise since the accident. I had a lot of problems that required multiple surgeries over the year. I have also gained 25-30 pounds in the time frame of not being able to do anything. That is even watching what I eat and counting calories. For me to just maintain weight, I have to be active. And that has been the major issue for me. I can double what Ruth says here. Take your time. Don't get frustrated. Do the little things like stretching and also focus on recovery. I have no clue what my paces are right now. I'm now up to running four minute intervals, very slowly. My pace right now is slower than my old easy run pace. My mind says wow this is slow, but my body is screaming at me to stop. I am trying to build up volume first. Before doing any harder intervals, i would like to be able to run for 30 minutes straight without stopping. Once I get up to that point, i will start to bring in intervals with faster paces. I want to enjoy running again, right now it is hard.

Super fascinating! I don’t see enough people talking about this. As an age group, I added up how much I spent on the 2024 season: $10,292 total and broken out it was $4,163 for tri gear, $2,468 for race registrations, $1,503 for massages, $861 for travel, $553 for nutrition, $445 for bike maintenance, $269 for training apps and $30 for pool costs. This included 1 Ironman, 2 70.3s, 2 Olympic distance races, 2 half marathons, 1 full marathon and a 5k.

For example, everyone is testing new sports watches, meaning all different brands, for running. Nobody is testing the same devices for precision in Open Water and Pool Swimming for all the cumming and past models. Then how is the health data from these watches relating to the exams that you have.....and then you can do this kind of analysis for different sports and recovery and talk about it. It would be cool to get Coros to sponsor you for the watch and the bike computer

I loved this video, really interesting to see how a professional athlete manages their money, sponsorships especially when they've had a tough season. Many - including myself - probably think all pros are really comfortable financially, with all their focus only on fitness and conditioning. But then you realise that the money varies season-to-season and is nowhere near what some would expect it to be. I can imagine that must be really stressful, especially when trying to perform or recover from an injury and then worrying also about money. Thank you for being so transparent, really informative. Best of luck over the winter period and hope you make a strong start to 2025.
