That makes perfect sense for the d10s. All the other basic polyhedral dice are Platonic solids, meaning that all the sides are equal and all the faces have an equal number of faces attached to them. And, implied by the name Platonic, they have all been defined and grouped together since at least ancient Greece. People making dice probably just defaulted to this ancient grouping of polyhedrons and didn't even think of anything else

The super light elf seems intentional. Legolas walks on top of snow, I think elves might not be like... ridiculoualy skinny, but instead magically weigh less than men. Part of the reason for their incredible agility. Just a theory.

Did this version not include the damage from a take that you fiend in the total damage score? In later editions it did and that made a lot of difference.
@SimonProctor5 сағат бұрын
And the direct damage from spells and missile weapons count towards the total damage and also deal direct damage.

I'd say that original D&D is both a wargame and an RPG, and also that pretty much any RPG with combat has at least light wargame elements.

I think Hunter: the Vigil is a pretty good way of playing a Supernatural type game. Sam is clearly a Lucifuge, in fact. While Dean is in The Union.

Personally i like a dice roll being more average than the usual dnd d20. But the idea that the game is full of hard rolls instead of average ones is baffling.

You should try a Changeling: The Lost character, CofD needs more love. Or maybe Deviant: The Renegades

Its funny that there are some ideas in there that are weirdly smart and could be used for other ttrpgs. Like the idea that you can ve ethical bur immoral based on w fact that its the laws that hold you back from doing evil things. But man...

im surprised that i havent seen this mentioned, but this is dnd... its a fantasy world. but noooooo women being strong is too crazy nuh uh let the big buff nerdy men living in the basement (i very much doubt that dnd was even somewhat mainstream back then) be the strong ones and save mlady. genuinely insane that this stuff is real.

with charm humanoid monster, it's much better to fail than to get that "mild success" effect. mostly because that seems extremely uncomfortable to roleplay unless your table is freaky like that

I actually really like the design on Steve the Fighter. It's like if the Pringles mascot decided to go slaying monsters to practice for duels against other product mascots.

I love that this time the proportions of the character you make was so bizarre that you just have to make the impossibly tall, impossibly slender elf magic-user, as opposed to other "lets make a character", and she turned out so cute! just a slenderman elf girl with her canestaff

I'd love to see what a later edition of this looks like, there's really a strong resemblance between this and some OSR takes I've seen! If you wanted a pretty simple episode with a similar vibe to the solo play you mentioned here, I'd suggest Dungeon Hero!

Call of Cthulhu has a similar relation with editions. A new edition would be a little cleaner to read, compile a few spot rules from adventures Chaosium thought would be generally useful but not change much about the core operation. A typical spot rule might be car chases, so you know if a T-Ford can outrun a byakhee.

The group combat is a bit funky. Pulling back a PC is partly encouraged on the players. They can argue that their positioning keeps archers and wizards back. Or that a very wounded fighter steps back. As seen, it means that one side can potentially overwhelm the other while suffering no attrition itself.

A ten minute turn being the standard measurement of exploration time is picked out of D&D. Usually it means light sources tick down, rations are eaten, random encounters rolled etc. Walking for 40 minutes means 4 turns pass. Magic points in T&T return just from existing, I think. So by striding onwards you regain your magic. After a few turns you are ready to zap some fools again. The voicer, or known as the caller in D&D, can be understood as the spokesperson for the PCs to the DM. Instead of listening to eight people chiming in you get the summary of their discussion.

I don't see any comment about this, so I thought I'd speak up. It's a "restated" version of D&D, not "restarted". As in, the rules of a game are not copyrightable, so Swords and Wizardry is *stating* those rules again in a different way from the original books. This was made before Hasbro/WotC were selling PDFs of Oe, when the books were long out of print and hard to come by. That said, the original point of retroclones were as publishing aids: if you wanted to publish an adventure for 1e AD&D, you couldn't just say that due to trademark stuff, so OSRIC was made first, with the expectation that people would just use their 1e books to play those adventures. The first version of OSRIC didn't even have monsters! Then Gygax and Arneson happened to die within a year of each other, and people wanting to go back accidentally found them, leading to OSR happening. Great video! An enjoyable watch, and I appreciate the look at one of my favorite retroclones.

This looks interesting, so I am going to have to look into it. And while the names of the spells seem more joke then reason, I can see a minor renaming to make it less clownish. And as far as the troubling issues dealing with enthrallment, well it is still in D&D, just in a more politically correct name. Either way, I hope to see more on later additions, this seems simple, but at the same time able to be more then it seem on the surface.

i find this game really interesting. im fine with some species just, being better in stats, and others worse in stats. but yeah it would de incentivize playing many of these species, and so another kind of incentive would be needed. also the strength for spells, while being interesting flavor wise, is kinda backwards mechanics wise

There are a lot of little things I like here. The dice fest in combat is a bit much. The Arneson usage of what became known as OD&D is also one of those bridging points, is enough known about the way he ran his games, versus what was codified in the OD&D system per se, that we might be able to reconstruct an "alternate first"?
