You know you've played too much Call of Cthulhu when "Vega kills the entire party" seems like a perfectly reasonable GM instruction.
@Chronoplague7 ай бұрын
That first adventure ending with the players providing backup to a significantly stronger and more important character sounds like such an amatuer gm's idea of a good story climax.
@RexDartEskimoSpy7 ай бұрын
It was pretty typical of how White Wolf did things too. There was a lot of "Watch as the powerful characters we wrote do things while you're unable to do anything to them!" in the writing of all their games back then. So, in a sense, this is an improvement. Not much of one though.
@timothymclean4 ай бұрын
To be fair, it's an entirely reasonable act 1 sub-climax...for a less interactive medium, if you plan to actually write acts 2 and 3. It shows how far the main character(s) have to go, making it all the more meaningful when they surpass the overwhelming antagonist, without actually letting them get overwhelmed by the antagonist. Of course, for this to work in a TRPG setting, you need to give the PCs something to do. Letting the PCs collectively control the friendly NPC is a...unique choice, but I don't think it's very effective at solving the problem. Doubly so if the PCs have no particular relationship with Guile. It's one thing if their master sacrifices himself to let them escape, but it's another if Some Dude overshadows the PCs in their own story.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Brazilian expansions have something to do with the Brazilian Street Fighter comics (Ditto for the Megaman and Mortal Kombat ones). [Do some research] Well the issue of the Dragao magazine I find first on the internet archive has an editor in common; Marcelo Cassaro. The Street Fighter wiki says he stepped down of his role of editor for the brazillian Street Fighter comic after issue 5, then created the Dragao Brazil magazine in 1995. I do remember from St1ka's videos on this "scene" of Brazilian/Portuguese comics in the 90 that there's some shared artists betwen those series... All I'll say is that this rabbithole's a bit wild. Excellent video!

In Street Fighter Alpha 3 he refers to himself by the full title of Master Bison ("Vega-sama" in the Japanese version), with Cammy and the Dolls referring to him in the same way as well. Despite M. Bison's followers (and himself) referring to him as "Master Bison" in Street Fighter Alpha 3, he is named "Lord Bison" in his Arcade mode introduction sequence in Street Fighter IV.

20:54 Just to clarify: the Shikomi-Zue entry is NOT in error - it is essentially a "Ninja Sword Cane", consisting of a hollowed-out Bamboo or Wooden "walking cane", which conceals a short sword or spear that can be unsheathed; hence, the attacker can use the drawn blade as a weapon, and can use the cane/shaft as either a second weapon, or as a means to block or deflect incoming blows (depending on the user's skill, and how strong/reinforced the cane shaft is). That's why the entry has the following "shaft" and "blade" dot points on the table. Now, as to why the Shikomi-Zue's Shaft is denoted as using the "Staff" Technique for it's function, while the actual *Staff* entry is blank....well, that's just "White Wolf Editing Magic" , init? 🤷♂️😉

at 10:14, you missed a major typo... "A thirty-degree turn (one hex side)[...]" a hex side is 60°. The online scans I've got match the dead tree I also have. I can't find the WW PDF of the missing maps, nor the interface with the WoD. The complete list of maneuvers is actually the most useful part of the GM screen. (I say this having run two campaigns). The online pirate consolidation is great. But given that the IP license is expired.... it's the only way to get it without selling organs...

Got me excited when you said that the secondary market for these was on the high end. I got a compete set with a few extras somewhere in the “library” storage. But on eBay I see them going for like $50 which isn’t “Dig through boxes in the basement” level of cost. It was “Dune: Chronicles of the Imperium” money.

Goes without saying with my other comment that my group played this in the 90s a bit. Never an ongoing campaign but it got busted out for random one shots or when someone wanted to really screw with the storyteller running a Vampire game that says “you can use other White Wolf books to make characters” What we did use is combat for a long running Werewolf RPG. It seemed to help that game run combat better then the base rule set.

White Wolf did later try to expand fighting styles again, this time in their usual semi-compatible with other systems sort of way. When they made Kindred of the East, that book included a Martial Arts skill, with a few associated fighting styles that you could take maneuvers from. It cost more points than the Brawl skill, but for that extra XP you got a lower difficulty on some attack rolls, depending on your style, in addition to getting 5 techniques a character can use. It worked fine with the existing combat system, but I don't know how many people ended up actually using any of the content from that line.

Almost all WW books before Y2000 (and more than a few supplements after that): - NPCs outside all possible character scale - Typos - Softcover - Material cut to make the book printable - No polishing after the cut material - See page XXX - or the page with a random full-page picture. Also, with probable exception of Exalted (which was after Y2K so I'm not sure if it counts) the characters built in any Storyteller game seem to be on the virtual "level 1", or max "level 3". And levelling is harder than in WFRP. And not always possible (generation in Vampire for example).

I'm still not over that Capcom and White Wolf were also working on marketing one of the Darkstalkers games as a World of Darkness spin-off and these two projects in no way interacted. Making a Darkstalkers supplement or version feels like such a no-brainer. It's be an easy way to bridge the Street Fighter game and White Wolf's other games by allowing more cross-pollination ("you want to play a werewolf fighter? you can get ideas for how to play a werewolf from...") encoring at-least some people who might be more interested in one or the other to maybe check out the other stuff. And Darkstalkers feels like a more logical fit for WhiteWolf's player base and also for the SF:TSG's own wacky anything-does kitchen-sink mixed both 90's edgy while at the same time not taking itself as seriously as something like the actual WoD. Some of the stuff here and in Combat, like bite-attacks, animal-claw attacks, elementals, animal hybrids, cybernetic/robotic attacks and so on really feel like they were made with Darkstalkers in mind rather than Street Fighter. Even the whole issue of the game being designed for fighting tournaments, but the game seemingly expecting you to do other things I feel would be less of a problem with Darkstalkers, since the setting and lore is set up to make tournamentesque fights happen between characters, without it being an actual tournament (and also their fighting moves would have more out-of-battle applicability). It wouldn't surprise me if some of this was actually made for, or in anticipation of, a Darkstalkers RPG/supplement and that this game maybe not selling as well as Capcom/White Wolf had expected lead to that's cancellation (and possibly having some of it's content turned into Combat?) as well as maybe the whole marketing-Darkstalkers-as-a-WoD-tie-in thing quickly dying with a whimper, although that didn't happened until 1997. Hell I wouldn't even be that surprised if the whole game was initially developed as a tie in with the first Darkstalkers game which came out just shy of a month after (and had, I think, a lot more input from the western side of Capcom than previous SF games), but Capcom or White Wolf felt Street Fighter would be a safer bet and changed it during development. Or something like that. (Also it just now hit me that I may have left almost the exact same comment on the last video you did on SF:TSG).

I think you missed the core appeal of this game which is it is canonically set in the shared World of Darkness setting. For a brief shining moment before Game Masters fully understood the ramifications of allowing these characters outside of their meta box there was no better published White Wolf material for completely trolling your GM. There is no greater joy than the look on your GMs face when you rip an elder vampire's head off with your bare hands, or when they realize that the only damage type that actually deals aggravated damage to you (except via overflow damage of your excessive amount of health boxes) is god dang frickin' lasers.

Great review! Dragão Brasil is a whole rabbit hole I fell into years ago after learning about the insanity that was Novas Aventuras de Megaman (New Adventure of Mega Man) and its. . . . an experience. Mind you, due to the close cultural ties with Japan, Brazil embraced anime and manga well before mainstream America and it had a huge impact on their content. The biggest setting worth checking out for 3D&T is Tormenta (Storm), based on the manga Holy Avenger, that centers around Valkaria---a huge city built around a massive mile-high statue of a nude petrified goddess. (Being the product of Brazil, expect big boobs on everything.) By the way, the Mega Man RPG and it is dirt-simple, although the skill system noted in the rules is a lie!

You can talk about the Street Fighter Storytelling Game as much as you want. I find it endlessly fascinating and that perfect balance between bad, weird, and good that I think requires extensive study and preservation! That said, your flumph avatar having a moving mouth is very distracting and deeply upsetting, even if it may be morphologically accurate (I am not aware enough on the flumph's anatomy to criticize).
