Anyone know where to buy bearer wire? Cooksons have stopped selling their good quality one.
@kimauger4293Күн бұрын
They called it step bezel wire. Did you search that term?
@heathercoleman9875Күн бұрын
@kimauger4293 Yes. That seems to be the american term. I've searched for both.

Thank you for this. Obviously quality and price usually go together. As a novice on a very tight budget, it’s tough discerning which tools I cannot skimp on in terms of quality. And, with my shaky sawing skills, this is definitely one of them.

I think some of the heads are meant to be used more lightly and with less overlap as some of those demos caused the pattern to cancel itself out. The hole in the one head possibly needed a more gentle approach to get a good effect, Durston are clever, I would be very disappointed to think they may sacrifice quality for "more is better" Agreed they could be more creative and produce more organic designs, but the responsibility is on the maker to use their tools in creative ways.

I wish I could see the other side of the metal and will you address the distortion in the metal after it has been hammered?

@SandraBalestrin - It could be the metal components that may be in the glazes they are using

Andrew, you are a fantastic teacher. Every time I watch one of your videos on something I know how to do(or think I do) I go "Well I won't learn anything new, but it's nice to get the basics repeated" but I always end up learning something I didn't know anyway. When I watch a video on something I am unfamiliar with, I always am always... well not surprised, but delighted at how understandable and approachable your explanations are!

Thank you! You can only stack 2 coupons. So the one in the email OR the ATB discount, which are the same, on top of the bf2024. It's a great discount. I'm still debating since I really want a proper jeweler's bench and it's been a very spendy quarter. This is very much a want and not a need. 😅

There is an amazing Japanese jeweller on KZbin (Think he is called SilverMeister) who makes his own texture hammers using nail varnish as a resist and acid to etch the design. Great idea for old hammers picked up in junk stores. As far as the Durston one goes they need a head that is lots of shallow round nodules to give the same texture as a ball peen hammer in a fraction of the time. Nobody seems to make those.
@ElinHaugan10 күн бұрын
Liked the bench block set better than the hammer. Personaly I think they could've been more creative with the patterns as two and two gave almost the same end result. The one with hole in the middle gave a ugly result, not sure what that would be suited for 🫣 Love the idea and would've bought it if it had more of a natural/organic pattern set. Geometric designes is better for impression plates i think. Appreciate the video, thank you Andrew 🙏

I’m crying as I watch this, longtime follower of At the Bench but was busy with life for months… missing the lives during which time ordered from Durston directly full price Intl shipping etc. the new Hobby mill. Take away is don’t stop watching at the bench as Durston benefits could apply!☺️

Wow Durston are legends 💟
@lordmark496612 күн бұрын
:/ bargain is a matter of perspective tbh, i jus dont see a purpose for em anymore since they have texture plates which are much more convenient than hammers and unless youre making weird designs outside of wax casting then... its just obsolete really compared to a normal hammer or brass hammer with more weight and sturdyness to it. to each their own tho, i can see the thought process behind it for sure but just not very practical for everyday use.
@Atthebench12 күн бұрын
This is an ideal way to apply textures for those who do not have a rolling mill or who can not afford the costs of texture/pattern plates. The cost of buying a single texture plate with one texture is twice the cost of this hammer, so based on that costing alone I'd say its very good value 😉
@lordmark496612 күн бұрын
@ you make a good point, would be cheaper im sure, but significantly less quality or consistency. Slightly more expensive for convenience and consistency is absolutely worth it in our field. Out of the 9 heads only like 4 are decent. In my personal opinion. If it works for what someone else does then more power to em.

I love the idea but what confuses me is that the gold solder has a higher melting temperature than the silver you are joining it to so how does that work.

Eee this is so exciting! I am new to silver smithing and recently made my first large rectangular bezel, but hadn’t thought ahead to how I was going to attach it, or what to. After poking around in the studio (that I’m so blessed to have access to as a newbie!) I decided to make a jump ring out of square wire to solder on to the top. When I placed it, I also hated how it looked so just before soldering I cut it in half, and honestly it looks so good. I’m really chuffed to have this KZbin validation, especially from you! I’ve learned a lot from your channel already, and I’m really grateful for the expertise you share. I hope something wonderful happens for you both today! 🖤
