Andrew Berry Reviews and Demonstrates the Durston Tools Ring Stretching Mandrels

Andrew recently purchased the new ring stretching mandrels from Durston Tools.
Durston state "Enlarge and resize rings with ease, the new Durston Ring Stretcher Mandrel, compact, easily stored away and ideal for working on the go.
Secure in a vice, clamp, or can be used with a Lathe/Polisher. Place the ring over the end of the mandrel and tighten the centre bolt with the included allen key. Compact, easily stored away and ideal for working on the go."

I use the same things but we are using them for a lathe to hold the rings. I didn’t know they were also used as ring stretchers.

Rather than a vice, get an 8M bolt for the other side, at least on the mandrel I have, that's what it's threaded for.

I think you can file a little bit of the sides of the tail so you can be sure that the vice holds it, also I think you'd be better off with a rachet allrn key (no idea if this is the right word in english, the allen key with a handle that goes krrrr krrr)

What type of tweezers are you using to dip into acid? (Metal) Great video!!

They are stainless steel AA tweezers

If the jaws of the vice were deep enough to grip the tang, yes. I found that the whole tang of the stretcher was secured along the length of the jaws.

It would be better if the spigot was square in section, otherwise this looks like a really good option for those who can't afford the rolls-royces alternative

I would suggest rather than have a longer allen key that seems to put stress on the curve part of that allen key. Buy or make your self a T bar this will put even stress on the center and don`t need long handles ,you can buy T bar allen keys with nice thick plastic molded handle,

Well since torque is the required force here, I’d say avoid any Allen keys. Hex tip in a 1/2” ratchet driver would be perfect.
