Did you know that onion domes have both a practical and symbolic purpose; to keep the snow from accumulating on the top and also is supposed to symbolize a flame.

Played this is High School Honor Band today. Played the string bass. Had that solo line (actually technically not a solo, but whatever).

The reason is sounds low in volume is because of how dynamic it is. Using computer speakers to play this, computer audio being what most of it is (compressed), you're robbed of how truly LOUD the loud parts really are. The gran casa strikes will move your chair back about two inches, and the Lay organ will ruffle the insulation in the attic, as well as make mirrors on the wall show a really wobbly reverse image. :) The low-range descending notes at 12:58 with that Lay organ present, are truly moving. Couple points where Junkin loses focus towards the final chords, oh, but getting there? WHOA!!!

YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS! I love those pedal tones in the organ underneath....beautiful, evocative music...when the majestic organ re-enters at the end, the final crescendos make me "see" the Gates of Heaven opening up...GLORY!! :-)

Mackey's concerto is usually regarded for its flare and difficulty, but so many people forget this, which I think is one of the most beautiful movements in the saxophone repertoire.

LOL... I wouldn't call it "ambient music", but it's very interesting. Thanks for providing the score! Is it written for one person per part, or are the stage band clarinets, flutes, etc. played by multiple players? Also, harp??I hope he doesn't have to march with it.

Zumindest laut unserem Dirigenten.

It's a to easier to think of the piece in one instead of two. A lot of groups slow down once the brass come in, so it's easier to manage tempo if you "slow it down"

Magnificent. In all my experiences with ambient music, never have I encountered such attention to detail and such brilliant flourishes. That feeling welled up inside me, as if it was to erupt, and that's a good thing.

Kind of strange that the (rare) saxophone solo in the old castle was rewritten for trumpet when saxophones actually ARE part of the concert band.

Wow, this piece was written in less than 16 days under the gun. Tantamount to Handel's Messiah as far as writing brilliant music quickly goes. If I'm not mistaken, Reed was a teenager attached to an Army Air Corps band when he wrote this. Amazing. Junkin's interpretation: freaking DEAD ON. Reminiscent of the power and excitement generated by '87 SCV. The only down side: you need seriously badass subs to avoid distortion in the organ part on the recording. Computer speakers just don't cut it.

Sound seems a bit quiet, or maybe it's just my computer. Beyond that, excellent piece. Every Christmas since junior year of high school (3-4 years) I set an alarm of this song at 11:50 so that, at exactly midnight, this piece will hit the beginning its climax and the Christmas bells will sing for all to hear. It's the beginning of what I hope will become an amazing tradition.
