I have one on my Toyota truck and had you actually bothered to ask them it's actually a GPS interface for their phone app !! Gives lots of telemetry info Inc when a service is due, mileage, engine condition and most important location of the vehicle..... Maybe next time post a sensible video rather than a load of bs !!

A chat with the GM of the car lot using a base ball bat might make him think twice so he will never make the mistake again. Helpful reminders for these crooks.

I found one in a new car I bought back in 2021. They hacked a bracket on the dashboard to make the installation easier, causing a rattle. When confronted, the dealer said they upsell vehicle tracking to SOME customers, but said they "knew" I didn't want that, so never mentioned it. To install that on a vehicle with that same service included by the manufacturer seems stupid. It was not a LoJack, it was some off-brand Chinese tracker and hacked into the harness- the real LoJack stuff isn't as obvious. I'm betting enormous numbers of people have these in their cars and don't realize it. My car was a cash purchase, so no need for a tracker to protect their interest in the car- even on a lease, the dealer is not the owner and has no part in dealing with non-paying customers of a lease. Only the "buy here, pay here" places that in-house finance (usually shitboxes) would have a need for these devices. For everyone shouting "sue everyone" - good luck with that. You'd have to prove they used it after your purchase to track you. Having the capability won't be enough.

Honestly my only issue with this is that they didn't tell you it was there when you purchased it, and didn't offer to remove it. I can see a dealership installing these on their cars to prevent cars being stolen or just driving away forever on a test drive... but again... they should have told you it was there and offered to remove it once the paperwork was signed.

That should be illegal. You should start or join a class action lawsuit against Toyota.

If it's not on the equipment list of the car when purchased then it can be viewed as undisclosed surveillance activities...that's FBI jurisdiction.

Damn, i'm so glad to live in a country with real privacy laws. In most of Europe having a tracker on a car without owner consent is highly illegal, even if the car is leased / financed / whatever.

There's a federal law that requires automakers to include gps in their vehicles. The law was passed in the last congressional budget (2023 year). The fact that these were poorly implimented leads me to belive that it was new news to the dealer.

Putting GPS tracker on someone elses car is no-no, most places it might be a crime. But the explanation of dealer makes sense. "Never attribute to malice something that can easily be explained by incompetence." The mechanics might not know the customer is waiting at the office or other details irrelevant to service of the car. If the dealer has a security issues, tracking cars stored at dealer makes sense and is beneficialt to customer- you know - not losing their car. But dealer should get system with GEO fense, so they would get alert if any of the trackers leave dealers area. This way would allow catching the car thief in progress and prevent forgetting tracker to customer's car. I think compensations are in order, at vary least brand new same model - or better - installed as it drained and damaged customers battery.

Wonder if it's part of a business insurance policy to have them installed at the lot, and cheaper to leave in place or possibly neglected to remove? Not something they'd want as public information, and maybe explain the coy attitude.

Alot of info going around lately about dealerships selling your information, and insuraunce companies essentially using it and raising your premiums extremely high for "excessive braking" or speeding etc. by law you are allowed to opt out. check if your car has it. I checked mine and even though my research showed it did not have it, i still emailed the dealership in regards to it

I’m gonna say you probably oh I think so. We already said that you finance the car so that’s probably a starter Killswitch as well as the GPS locator for the repo people and they don’t have to sign our agreed to that. Apparently I was researching that for a friend of mine here in California we can get her car to start one day so.
