I've experienced the exact same thing today at the bund and paid in the end 140usd. My mind was racing, when I saw the Bill, but i still was under pressure and drunk at the same time, so I paid. Those 140 USD learnt me a lot

Exactly the same happened to me when i was there. Luckily i said no to everyone right from when it started My plan is to turn it around next time i am getting there: when somebody approaches me i will hammer them with questions and invite them to the next mcdonalds for a happy meal

Because Saigon had been under French for 100 years and Americans for 20 years. They open to the West, party and play. And Hanoi was under communist, HCM leader, so poor, not enough food to eat, even people in the North worn sandals made by old tires from the car. Saigon = West Berlin Hanoi = East Berlin

Laos new year is same as Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam - around April 13 to 17 every year. The time that you visited was the hottest and driest period - April & May. Glad that you had the opportunity to feel the water festival.
