I’m kinda following a similar pattern of training. I’m working on my long cycle, but with a relatively light weight 16k, even though my goal is to get to double 24s, but I’m working on getting the engine used to doing sets of 10 minutes by hitting the right tempo and lowering the time between sets at present

I spent the 80's and 90's trying to get bigger/stronger for football. I'm 53 today and fitness priority is to get 200-300 kettbell swings every training day before I do anything else. The only other exercises I do are barbell pushpress, front squat, chins, and deads, plus regular kettlebell basics. I put priority on the kettlebell. I rarely lift that heavy on squats or deads but when I do the power is always there with not much focus on it. If I was to go back in time to train myself for football, it would be completely different.

What are your thoughts re the WTH effect? It is usually directed to 2 handed single KB swings, correct? Is it a myth? SF urban legend? Or is there something to it, but you can get a greater WTH effect by working out differently w/ different exercises?

Gregory doesn't understand how intense an indoor bike trainer can be.

Gregory, I am a "hard style" mostly self taught and dissolutioned isolated KB'er who started in early 2010 and train alone in my garage. I discovered your channel a few months ago, discovered Levi thanks to these 2 podcasts, and suddenly I am addicted to working out w/ KBs once again! Gone are the 2 handed single KB swing and TGU. In are the long cycle, 2 bells overhead work outs and implementing lots of what you are discussing. It's like it's Spring again, the birds are chirping and I love exercising again! Much appreciation!!

Grüezi Gregory! The podcast is great, lots of very important points. I think that with kettlebells, like with opera singing, there should be initial guidance and if that guidance is correct, the body will then respond and adjust the technique to make it more efficient. For the body to start teaching the singer (or the athlete), it has to be pushed in the right direction. Otherwise, the singer spends the whole rehearsal fighting the discomfort rather than getting more and more comfortable with the process of singing. The same could be said about sports with multiple reps.

Late comment: Deep dive, and really, really important for the fitness scene in general, you only get this level of info at the university level. It also only goes to show that endurance weightlifting , mixed with interval training, is one of the most effective “health and longevity” out there. Kettlebells cover the spectrum. 🤓😎💪💪

Great Podcast, as always. About building Power, there's an easy way you can see yourself how the Hard Style version of these ballistics lift generate much higher power than kettlebell sport versions: attach a sensor like Output Sports, and see for yourself. I tried myself and there's a lot of difference. The velocity is much higher with hard style, which is why power is much higher. Also, time to peak power is higher because there's a higher initial acceleration. Of course you can build power in both ways, but HS is better suited, while kettlebell lifting style works better for power-endurance. And of course you can build power with kettlebells, you just need a decent load (usually 1/3 of BW for swings, which is lighter than you would expect) and maximal intended concentric velocity. Nowadays with Vitruve, Output Sports, Enode or other sensor you can simply test these things yourself if you want. By the way, the concentrics and eccentrics in kettlebell ballistics are so high that you definitely are increasing power expression, with a focus on the speed portion of the curve. You can reach 4,5,6 or more m/s in kettlebell swing with hard style, which is a very high velocity compared to barbell exercises, while using decent loads.

Great stuff guys! I'm defiantly guilty of losing focus, but sometimes its a good thing to keep me wanting to do it! The one thing that always does the trick (which i think is similar to Levi's) is EMOMS, whether short 10min finishers or long 60min, its a race, a challenge, a game all against myself all by myself. You dont have time to think about giving up, the clock becomes the drill Sargent yelling at you and you dont have time to think you just do!

The first thing I will say, is that I rate a podcast/ interview by how much I would have liked to be a part of the conversation. This was one of those where I wish I was there, so, thank you both for the stimulation. Being a couple of decades down the track from both of you, and having tried many modalities over the last 60 years including more than 20 years using kbs and having studied the history of physical culture (and many other things), I have learned that it's useful to comprehend that everyone is wrong about something and a worthy "goal" is to work to become less wrong and in fewer areas over time. Most folks get locked in to a limited assumption of what's possible and how it can be accomplished based on prior programming they are not consciously aware of- a precognitive commitment, as Deepak Chopra used to write about. Once observed, you don't have to take their opinion seriously, but can use it to sharpen your own thinking. The old adage of "the person who says it can't be done should never interrupt the person doing it" applies here. Regarding the Turkish getup, the value for me is in connecting the movements in a smooth flow from floor to stand and back again which translates to better overall movement when not loaded. I don't see people who train the elements individually as moving as well. I always say I train because it makes the rest of life easier. The tools are just tools. What matters is how consistently and how well one uses them.
