Hi Stephen, I've been two weeks without my 98 Ram 1500 4x4 quad cab 5.2 liter due to a mouse or squirrel having eaten a hole in my fuel rail crossover hose. Mechanic said I need to get a whole new rail and hose since the hose is specially heat shrunk at the factory as it's a pressurized fuel system. He couldn't find a rail from anywhere, junkyards, Dodge dealership, nowhere. Told me I had to find one myself. Took me 5 days to get one off ebay and sand and paint it. Took an uber to the mechanic, gave it to him and he noticed one port slightly bent. He said it might be an issue, up to me whether to go forward with it or not. I said do it...risking double charge if he had to do it again. Well, he called two days later and said due to the bent port, that injector isn't seating straight and is leaking gas. So I found a junkyard myself, another couple ubers, brought it home after the yard guy removed it and took it to a back room and popped the injectors out. So....I get it home. It was dripping with gas and I looked at the ports. They are luckily perfectly straight, all 8 of them. So I noticed there were still 3 rubber o-rings still in three of the ports. I got a small flathead screwdriver and lifted each one out. Then I turned the rail over onto a towel on my floor, port sides DOWN to get any little bit of gas out. I then lifted it up to look at how much gas got on the towel, and I saw two super small, 10 mm copper crush washers sitting side by side. Obviously one came from a port and the other from the port next to it. They were both laying flat on the towel, equally spaced. So I figured the other six copper washers must have popped out with the rubber o-rings at the yard when the guy was popping the injectors out. So, it seems these copper tiny crush/sealing washers must have been UNDER the donut rubber o-rings that were in each port because I took the rubber rings out first. Hmmm. So I went to Napa, another Uber ( $$$$) and bought rubber o-rings that apparently as the guy told me, get stuffed into the fuel rail before the injectors go in ( BTW Do the injectors also have another slightly larger rubber O-ring gasket ON the injector itself? ) I asked him about the copper crush washers and he said, " Hmmm, they must be the metal washers that go maybe on the end of the injectors before you insert them into the ports." BUT...this seems wrong because as I said I tipped the rail over and two of these tiny copper crush sealing washers fell out of two ports AFTER the rubber rings were already removed. So it seems they must have been at the bottom of each port with the small rubber o-rings on top of them. I also noticed the copper crush washers have a flat side and the other side is more concave and rounded off. Can you tell me where the copper washers actually go and in relation to the rubber o-rings....and if there are also other slightly larger sized rubber O-rings on the injectors tip? Thanks man. I appreciate any info Steve. A damn tiny hole in a 5 dollar rubber hose from a mouse has up till now cost me $1,150.00 in two fuel rails bought, repairs so far and a ton of Uber rides to work, store, laundry, junkyard, mechanic, Napa, etc. Plus the massive two week inconvenience. I just want it fixed and with no dangerous leaks that could start a fire. I've had this Dodge for 26 years since I bought it new back in 98. Appreciate any info. Thanks again Stephen. Kevin

@@philosopher0076hello there, sorry to hear about your troubles. So there shouldn't be any copper crush washers on top of the injectors, Oliver should be is one big rubber o-ring that slips around the top of the injector and that slides very tightly up into the injector rail I usually use Vaseline or WD-40 to assist it back up into the injector rail, what's a tight fit then reinstall the retaining clips. Only thing I can think of is that part of the old injectors that little metal ring remind me to be part of the tops of the old injectors. There shouldn't be any other o-rings in the top part of the injector rail. How there should be is one rubber a ring on top in one rubber o-ring on the bottom and possibly one plastic ring on the bottom. When installing injectors back in the rail and back into the head you will use Vaseline or WD-40 on the o-rings for easier installation. Installing into the head Isabel the hardest get them to seat in properly. You probably could have gone by with a high pressure hose and for hose clamps the first time. The high pressure the mechanic's talking about anywhere from 40 to 60 PSI that's really not a lot of PSI probably been able to use a regular fuel line add that pressure. I'm sorry to hear you had to put that much money and time into a easy fix.

Does the bottom port on the valve have its own metal washer? I see it in the opening shot of your video, but not in the actual installation process. AI'm asking because after replacing the valve, I was still getting P0491 so I took it to the local mechanic. They said the new Dorman check valve I put in was inferior, and stuck in the open position. Just yesterday I bought and installed a new OEM valve, but it came with no metal gaskets/washers. I reused the one for the upper port, but the valve I removed (Dorman) had no metal gasket on the lower port. I swore it did when I installed it. Thanks for your time.
@stephengoad30912 ай бұрын
@@whiskeyhill1483 yes it will have little metal gasket. Basically they are a crush gasket. You should have two small holes and one big one in the middle. When you remove it usually they fall down onto the ground or on to the metal subframe under the engine that's probably where it went over sometimes they stick to the block. If you continue to get that code I definitely recommend checking or replacing pressure line with the sensor in it and if you still have code sometimes a portion of the manifold where the bottom part of the valve connects to the hole can get clogged up who is carbon and cause insufficient flow code. So to sum up yes it has a little metal gasket it was probably either stuck to the block or it fell off when you took out the bolts and removed it, some of them add little metal tabs that hold it to the valve other ones use the bolts to hold it in position. I hope this helps

It would be great if consumers were taught how to properly break-in an engine. That would all but negate these oil consumption issues. Sadly, even if taught how to break-in an engine, the amount of people that would follow that process is incredibly small. And then those same consumers would complain about oil consumption issues. It is utterly ridiculous, and until manufacturers & consumers actually get on the same page, this will continue for as long as internal combustion engines exist.

The build-up is from a combination of direct injection and oil consumption; all direct injection cars will do this to Some degree. However, VW/Audi has a recall of some of these cars, they would replace the pistons and rings. Pistons have to small an oil port on the bottom oil control ring, and the rings themselves were too loose in an effort to increase efficiency. IIRC, the piston set with rods is about $800 w/o recall. Not certain what cars still fit under the recall.
@stephengoad30918 ай бұрын
Yeah Audi states to give them your VIN number off the vehicle they will get back to you about if your vehicle is under the recall or not. Which at this time my vehicle is not. Usually what I do is just change out the piston rings for aftermarket ones with the waffle style scraper ring it does help control this condition resume updating the PVC system will help as well or catch can or vent to atmosphere for offering use 😉😉

This is common on direct injection engines. Many manufacturers went to direct injection, and made a big assumption the intake ports & valves would remain clean despite the lack of fuel making contact with those areas of the engine. What manufacturers are going to (such as Toyota, who has been leading the way), is a combination of port and direct fuel injection. You get the benefits of both with a setup like that, and clean intake ports.
@confederatenationalist72838 ай бұрын
How does oil or direct injection affect the inlet ports.The only thing going into the inlet ports is air not oil or fuel or combistion products. Exhaust ports I could understand it if direct injection isnt doing as advertised for clean combustion. Either way no one with any sense is going to shot blast the ports with the head on the engine. So effectively it needs a head off decoke as we called it every 20k miles. On an old school engine that would have been at least 60k miles.If not top end rebuild time new with new valves and seats and guides etc.All much cheaper and easier on a pushrod 2 valves per cylinder motor. The only way to run one of these laughable complicated modern engines and cars is with a main dealer warranty and service plan and for no longer than the shortest PCP/Lease purchase plan possible.These are not viable long term ownership products.
@stephengoad30918 ай бұрын
All right so this is how oil/carbon gets on the backside of the valve in a direct injection. Let me first thing that the older models didn't have this problem because they had injectors in the intake blasting fuel over the backside of the intake valves so basically if you would wash any oil or gunk stop back there off. Now since the new ones have the direct injection there's no fuel to wash the intake valves off. Now how does the oil get their here's how your PVC system which is that big black triangle box put it down on top of the valve cover/cam retainer which controls the pressure in the block and bleeds it off back into the intake and reborns it so with that air where is small particles of oil which one is the valve closes and everything comes to a stop play oil is slammed into the wall and sticks there, that's where the oil comes from is your PVC system. The company news is what I've been told play continue to sound vehicles anyway, turn on the new modern engines they've tried to fix this problem quietly by updating the PVC system I'm putting a fuel injector behind the throttle body in the intake on single injector that blasts fuel every little bit to wash any oil build up or carbon out into the cylinders. For this engine what I did to mostly stop close to that was I unplugged play PvC inlet pipe from the intake put a small screen filter on it after extending the tube out underneath the car so it would be in the airstream when I'm driving to help pull the air out of the tube and out from underneath the car, that was my cheap fix so this will be very unlikely to happen again and only 140,000 miles. Now oil still can get into the system through the turbo if you've got a leaking turbo seal, if that's the case look for oil in any of the intake tubes before the throttle body and especially in the intercooler, if it's bad enough leak your inner cooler may have a few inches of oil in it. Sorry for the long drug out message I thought you might want to know what causes it in a possible fix. Now for cleaning play do you want you to bring it in to have it sandblasted but you can always is simpler a chemical method at home you just have to take the intake off turn the engine over my hand so the cylinder you're working on owls are closed then you will basically fill them one by one full of parts cleaner or you can use paint thinner. When you're doing this you want to take the spark plugs out so it's easier to turn, also put the spark plugs out when you are completely done and intake back on and spark plugs out you want to rotate the engine over to make sure none of the cleaner has run down into the cylinders which could hydraulic the cylinder would you recycle it a little bit it should be ready for spark plugs back in and try cranking it. I hope this information was helpful.
@confederatenationalist72838 ай бұрын
@@stephengoad3091 Maybe diesel crankcase ventilation designs could provide a solution they would have had the situation of no fuel washing valves and inlet ports for decades ?. But they now seem to be running into EGR systems creating similar problems. I can remember brake vacuum servos and air filters and housings being soaked in oil from old crankcase ventilation systems. Thanks for clarifying the problem. It seems just another reason to trade these modern cars in ( much ) sooner rather than later. But that's obviously eventually going to have a bad knock on effect on residual values.Which will eventually wreck the figures of the trade in quick idea.
