This is very funny as i have always put my fin right forwards, i just feel that i can surf way more freely than when i have moved it back. Forward looser, further back the tighter the turning feels. Fin forward kind of makes a long board handle and react more like a shorter board. For me it's fin fully forward. I always have used raked fins. And my favourite board is a thirty year old 10 foot mal which i have surfed in every condition from ankle snappers, to pumping Noosa. The fin is 9 inches and more raked than a Greenough fin, which i have on my eight foot board, that is a 10.5 inch fin. Now yes i have changed them to compare the different fins on the different boards but it's really weird because i didn't really like the boards with the other fins in, the ten foot board did feel different in a slightly better way, but my eight foot didn't like the smaller fin. I just put it down to what you are used to. And what works for me might not work for you.

Thank you for such helpful video, can’t wait to implement this to my next surf session! I tend to be pulled over if I stay on the top third of the wave and I feel like I’m going at the fastest when I’m at the bottom third. Am I missing something? Or would it just be that I’m too up high on the top third?
@BenConsidine4 күн бұрын
Yeah really good pick up!! There’s a little bit of nuance to this - but if you’re in the top 3rd and the board angle is still going up the wave we’ll likely fall off the back. The key is to maintain a negative or neutral trajectory of the board across the wave when we reach the top 3rd to stop this from happening. As for feeling faster in the bottom 3rd, this may be the case in quite a critical section where we’re close to the white water as the wave will be steep and critical here, but everything in front of the white water we’ll definitely be generating more speed from that top 3rd. I hate how there’s always an exception 😂 but hopefully that makes sense!! 🙏🤙

I love your channel Ben! I can tell you how helpful your videos have been. I grew up logging at Doheney and Sano but never had a coach or anyone to really help me grow. I wish I’d had this as a kid. Over paddling is something I realised I was doing. My take is, you can't catch a wave, the wave catches you and you decide if it does that in a way that allows you to ride it with control.
@aaronhopkins669710 күн бұрын
My tip from an old bloke who was a shuffler for way too many years. When first learning to cross step, practice all the time, not only while in the water but on a white line on the parking lot, on a gutter edge anything just get used to the actual motion of the cross step. After many years of practice, well you could say it's just like riding a bike. 🤙

Will you do a deep dive on this? How sharp are the rails? Nose concave, rocker?
@BenConsidine12 күн бұрын
Hey! A deep dive on the board?? I could definitely think about that maybe for some short form content (not sure it would go for a whole long form video) BUT - that board is the ‘stylemaster’ by south coast surfboards, in the 9’6, it’s a very flat shape with wide point in the middle and a shallow concave in the nose. It’s kind of like a mix between full Aussie pig style wide point back boards and the Californian noseriders!!!

This is sooooo good to know!! My board definitely has the wide point to the back which might explain why I find nose riding easier on steeper/faster waves??? I feel the tail latching on way better compared to gentle waves. And I honestly struggle with these soft, kind waves. I feel like my surfing level decreases massive.

Hey Ben! It doesn't seem like you're very far back on the board, how did you manage to not bog the rail in those sweet turns?
@BenConsidine13 күн бұрын
Hey!! The curve on this board is pretty crazy at the tail (tail rocker) and makes it super responsive, so unless you’re needing to quickly disengage a lot of rail it will carve super nicely from where I am there. It also may be a touch deceptive looking like I’m further forward than I might be as the wide point is super back on this board, so may not be as close to middle as it looks. Hope that helps!!! 🙏🤙
