On the xy alignement. There is a method used in sailing called alignments. Applied to surf, when you are at the peak, you just have to pick 3 points ( works ok with 2 points) on land that align on 2 different axis ( the axis don’t have to be perpendicular) as long as you can see those 2 alignments you’re in the sweet spot. I often use branch of trees aligned with house in the background, and road sign with parked car

Hey Ben, congrars to the qualification!! That's amazing. As a physicist, oceanographer, climate scientist and shaper as it coemes to positioning in the line up, you always need 2 markers for each axis. Lining these 2 markers up you will be at the correct line for that first direction ( a house and a tree or a tree and darker sand or srones at the beach ) now in order to be at the correct distance from the shore you pick up another 2 marker looking more sideways. With that you have two perfectly defined lines and right where these 2 lines intersect ( both pair of marker line up ) you are at the spot you wanted to be. The second pair of markers can also be your first ones as in your example with the visibility of the house ( only roof, windows or the whole house ). Here you actually use the third dimension ( z-axis ) for your second bearing. Physics is amazing. So great that you talk about this topic. It is so valuable Information that had never been written down and everybody had to learn it the hard way. Did you recieved my e-mail? Hope to see you in Europe Best Martin 🤙🏻

triangulating your position using 2/3 points on the land works well - I picked this up after watching a documentary about Mavericks and Peter Mel explained it well.

Hello Ben, thanks for the video. I can tell if the waves are breaking left, right or a close out from the beach relatively easily, but when I'm in the water I struggle to tell which line to take. Your thoughts please?

Congratulations man, you deserve it, good style and good surfing 🤙🏄😎 And it's the perfect timing for that video! Ah, do you have another tip for active thinking while you are on the wave, for example, (I always forget about stalling with my hand while trying to get a barrel...) and after the wave i am like🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

Good stuff. Unfortunately, the longer you go without a good wave, the better the bad waves look. Good way to improve your backhand surfing: Go to a point break where every wave is a backhand wave. Thanks, Ben.
@BenConsidine

Haha thats very very true, sometimes you've just gotta get one hey, definitely true we can also get caught with indecision where we pass on everything in the bad conditions!! Guess we have to strike that balance haha - really good point on the backhand surfing as well. Hope it was useful!! 🤙🤙
