All cool car any year all the way to this day for sure. But in 2010 they switched to a consumable, disposable, unmaintainable architecture, just like all other modern cars. The model I am looking for is any year with a small block chevy swap already done and running. Its a hard balance to find between a junked one and disrespecting an otherwise decent example of a jag. Its one of the few "additional" cars my wife would happily tolerate in the driveway.

I've owned several Jags. I still have an '01 XJ8 VDP and an '03 XK8 convertible, 70K and 56K miles respectively. They've been great, and are just lately getting cranky. I love them, but the new ones lack the personality that made Jaguars so special. Loved the episode, HCG! Thanks!

Thank you for the video. Where is Jaguar headed in future? That remains to be seen, but this was interesting to watch the model changes of the XJ series. It really got interesting under Ford ownership. GM at one time wanted to buy Jaguar. They did not. The brand has had its issues, but kept surviving on name and prestige recognition alone.
@thehopelesscarguy3 күн бұрын
In many ways it is surprising they have lasted this long. I understand they do well in Asia and still carry a prestige image in the eyes of many, but have been dependent on a number of parent companies over the years.
@OLDS983 күн бұрын
@@thehopelesscarguy It is surprising. The British gave up on their own auto industry and it got sold off in parts over time. British Leyland used to be the GM of England with all its brands. Something started going wrong in the 1970's and 1980's. The Jaguar name has prestige still. It is just not being utilized properly. Just kind of sad.

I drove a Pinto as a messenger for a small bank chain in 1976. The 4 speeds were not bad. Must have driven at least 50 miles per day. My old girlfriend had an automatic '76 Pinto & it was VERY SLOW, almost dangerously so, getting on the freeway was almost like taking your life in your hands. I had an '86 4 cylinder Mustang and the 2.3 liter engine was quite good. Plenty of torque. Only complaint was the stock radiator which was only as thick as my thumb. After a trip in which I overheated returning from Utah I had a V8 size radiator installed & that solved the problem, no more overheating. If you take a look @ the Burr trail switchbacks in Utah, once I had the larger radiator I took the 4 cylinder Mustang down to the bottom & back to the top again. Was running almost hot climbing back up BUT I made it!!

Almost without exception I’ve heard horror stories of phantom electrical issues that never get properly diagnosed or repaired, and that they are a mechanic’s nightmare under the hood. I think if it wasn’t for their uniquely Jaguar styling and beauty over the years the brand would have ended long ago. Lol. Thanks for a great video, HCG. 👍👍👍

THE Original XJ was arguably the most beautiful sedan of all time, of any maker. The exterior was DIVINE and the interior almost as good as a Rolls Royce that was several times more expensive. This got WORSE with EVERY GOD DAMNED REFRESH. The PENALTY for its good looks was the low roofline and the terrible back seat, where no adult could fit, especially in the MIDDLE. (I Know, this was the car we went out to have fun after high school graduation, a gorgeous navy blue XJ6 with a tan leather interior, BUT the back seat was sheer torture, and I am only 6 1", not some 7 footer NBA player. Current models are GOD AWFul And GOD DAMNEd Crossovers, AND the interiors have NOTHING IN COMMON with the "English club luxury" of the original XJ. PITY!

If the models were measurably superior in reliability, they could have outlasted some of the other legacy brands, achieving the target goal of competing domestically with Toyota and Honda. I still like the notion of some plastic body panels and zero haggle on a "value" brand. As it stands, I see very few of them rolling around anymore. I guess they were not particularly reliable. If they were renowned for reliability, I would rather see Saturn around than Buick. At least its niche is still viable. I have no idea what a Buick is for these days.

Early models were supposedly reliable. I can't say I see many 90s Camrys or Accords running around considering how many were sold. But at this point maintenance, or lack of it, is a more likely consideration.

The lines get really blurred with the introduction of the probe, and the downsizing of the monte carlo and thunderbird. Excellent. You did a great job of the history and many models Saturn had. You explained how they went from independent in GM to being integrated into GM. GM used to run all its brands as semi independent up until the 1980's. Saturn became Opel North America is what took place as they integrated into the rest of GM. I know it may have worked. I know that the last Buick Regal was supposed to be a Saturn Aura replacement. Buick got the car when Saturn was phased out. That car was the Opel/ Vauxhall Insignia. Holden got the car too as Holden Commodore. Saturn was created to take on the imports, but it caused issues inside of GM with the other brands( mainly Chevrolet) and they fought back. I guess the GM dollars could have better utilized. I recall that whole merge with Oldsmobile thing. The Oldsmobiles would have been the upscale cars and Saturn the small cars. All together it was supposed to be GM's import fighter. We all know how that turned out. I know parts of the Saturn Outlook ended up on the GMC Acadia. Saturn hindered GM. It then became an issue of too many brands and trying to maintain them all. Thank you so much again.

We had a 1994 or 5 Saturn sedan- base with manual transmission. I really like it, the way it drove and its materials inside seemed premium for a basic car. We did have an exhaust that would rattle, and you could hear the gas slushing around in the gas tank- both of which the dealer basically said we had to liv with. For these two reasons, my wife hated, but I still liked it for its minimalist and rebellious feeling. I still remember the salesman, Willie at the dealer in Rockford, IL. The longer Saturn was around, and Gm meddles with it- the worse it got. I wanted a Vue when they came out, but never did get one. Nice video- thanks!

Had two S-series Saturns, they were good little cars and if I could find a nice SW2 5-speed I'd buy it in a second. Ultimately Saturn's demise was due to a change in CEO...Roger Smith set up Saturn, but by the time the cars came to market Roger Stempel was in charge and wanted nothing to do with an independent division.
@user-surly18 күн бұрын
Saturn's demise could be attributed to it becoming a lot less different than initially advertised. The premise was a ground-up new company that wasn't obviously linked to GM. They killed it off when they started rebadging GM models as Saturns to cut costs.
