You have a great mindset man. I’m a CRNA and love my decision. I felt the same way about CRNA as you do about being a physician. Keep on keeping on brother!

I will say to all reading this, if you want to learn deeper in nursing school, you’ll often find yourself over studying. I learned about the 4 subtypes of Leukemia and prophylactic breast cancer medication that also increases the risk of endometrial hyperplasia due to the medication being a selective estrogen receptor modulator and the excess estrogen accumulation involved. That’s not on the NCLEX 😂 I really do love this stuff. For now, I’ll continue to verse myself extensively in pharmacology and the most common pathologies (In case I do go to med school after all)

I resonate so much with this comment. I find myself over studying so much which helps mostly but then I feel like it’s wasted time could’ve been spent on something more productive

Wow, yes! For me also, it’s about the depth of knowledge! When I briefly considered CRNA school as a future possibility, I felt this heavy pit in my stomach thinking about all I could learn in 4 years of medical school that CRNA school wouldn’t touch. Good luck to you and blessings on your journey! (:

Quick question, after graduating from college, is it possible to just go to a 4 year college and do the prerequisite without a major? I just want the prerequisite not a 4 year major

You should be able to take stand alone classes at most places yes. but will just depend on the school. I originally tried to do that at my college but it was more expensive than the local community so I just went and did that! but I would be lying if i said that a big university does not look better than a community college- to what extent that is true I am not sure. do what works best for you .. crush it... and nothing is going to hold you back

Wrapping up my RN this semester. Been thinking about the switch. I won’t even have my BSN yet. As strongly as I feel about gaining more knowledge and having a more advanced scope of practice. I can’t get over the feeling that family and connection with people outside of the hospital matters more to me. I’m 26 and I would be maybe 37 or 38 by the time I’d be an attending? If you had a partner or were considering having a kid do you think you would have made a different decision?

Hey future Doc, thank you so much for the transparency! I feel right in the same boat as you! ICU as a new grad RN to now, except prior, I had already nearly finished a bachelor's in Biology. I'm back to working on that now - finishing physics and Biochem and etc. Any advice or schools to consider? Also, can you go into how you did your application, like extra curriculars? Shadowing experience, etc? Thanks!! Looking to go into Pathology, by the way :)

Hey Bryce, I did not do any shadowing. but I am sure if I asked many of my attending would have been happy to help me out. I was pretty confident in my decision so didn't feel the need however it would certainly not hurt an application in any way. If you want to go for it

yea that was my plan too! I am a nursing major; this is my last quarter of my second year. I have the passion to go to med school and I want to do the prereqs for med school while I work on my nursing degree. However, the nursing class schedules overlap with the classes for med school. I think, the only option I have is to use the summer only to take some of them.

Hey Pat I want to thank you so much for making these videos. You're very straightforward, no BS, providing information for the listeners. Your videos have helped me relate to my situation. I'm a active duty Army, just about to start my CVICU journey but med school has always been in my mind. I've taken most prereqs when I was in nursing school so my goal is to apply to med school in the next 3 years. I want to ensure I focus on being a competent ICU nurse first. Hope to learn more from you and pick your brain sometime in the future!

Hey Sarah, your comment means a lot to me, thank you! And thank you for your service. As you've heard in my other videos I think their CVICU is a fantastic place to start. You will be challenged and put in uncomfortable situations and you will have to rise to the occasion and get better everyday. I agree with you, become the best nurse that you can be over the next year and then see where you are at and what the next steps should be. You seem like you are in a great place and have already made some huge steps on your journey to physician. I hope the videos I make will continue to help you on your journey. I look forward to hearing all about it

Hi! Thank you so much for making these videos. I've been a nurse for 4 years and just starting ICU. Med school has always been in the back of my mind. I started taking prereqs when I was in nursing school but then stopped once I started working. I'm also active duty Army. Really leaning towards finishing up my prereqs and apply to med school in 2 years or so and hope to go to a school where the military pays for it

Hi Friend, I feel exactly what you feel! I did very well in nursing school but I very soon found out that what I learned is superficial. I am an icu nurse and didn’t enjoy the work. I feel like I am a robot to follow orders and clean patients. There is really not much critical thinking in my work and lots of nursing skills and stuffs like you said I just don’t really care and not interested. I am thinking between crna and MD routes too. Also my pay and benefits are very terrible and work environment can be toxic sometimes, which makes me dread to go to work.

they made step 1 and step 2 pass/fail. its no longer based on merit its subjective based off what your professors and preceptors think you will be deemed worthy of. alot of MD's will make less then CRNA lol
@RN2MDpat
@RN2MDpat Жыл бұрын
hey dude, thanks for being here and sharing your thoughts. I think these are important and fruitful conversations to have. Step1 has become p/f however step2 is still scored. Are not most assessments that are not a numerical score subjective? Anyways at my school in order to have a high pass in rotations you need to do well on shelf exams which are a numerical assessment as well as have high subjective assessments from the physicians you work with. I personally would prefer step1 to be scored but just because step1 is p/f does not mean merit does not still play a major part. In regards to pay. If you have seen a few of my videos you know that salary is not a a big part of my decision making process. Regardless, I dont think your comments have much substance. A quick google search will give you an idea of compensation. Are you in the medical field? Take Care!

Nursing is great, but maybe it is not what i am looking for. So, again.. Thanks for sharing! You said, you only took general chem and physics? Was the mcat challenging without having to take O-chem? Also, Now that you are in medical school, How are the lectures there vs nursing school? Can you give me a little bit more idea of how medical school is?!

Hey! So I’m currently a 3rd semester nursing student now. Next semester is my last for the ADN portion and then I have a year for online BSN.. So now that I see the dynamic between physicians and patients vs. nurses and patients in the hospital setting, I can tell that nurses are so much closer to the patients. Being a nurse vs a physician is completely different (beyond diagnosis and treatment). I’m not sure how I feel about that! But for now, I’m thinking of going to CRNA school. As much as I love the acquisition of medical knowledge and the application of it to patients, I can’t start over from scratch and do med school. I’m still torn, but right now it’s looking like being an Anesthesia provider with my doctorate is the vibe!

I'm also a nurse who is also working on pre-requisites hoping to apply for medical school next year. One question for you is how you got your shadow hours? Hey! so glad that you are going for it! to be honest I didn't shadow anyone. I was pretty confident that my experience and having a ton of conversations with physicians was enough to show me that It was where I want to be. As far as your application goes I don't think shadowing will ever be a bad thing! but for your case of coming from a nurse I do not think that it is necessary to get into medical school. But in general my advice would be to talk to the physicians that you are friends with and let them know your plans. I am sure they will be willing to help you in anyway that they can. At least for me everyone was always so encouraging and kind. They may even have some friends in outpatient they could connect you with if thats what you're looking for. I hope this helps a tiny bit. I look forward to hearing about your journey, keep working
